00:00The Court of Appeal heard explosive claims on Wednesday in the ongoing case of Muar MP
00:07Syed Sadiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who is appealing his conviction on corruption charges.
00:14Defence lawyer Datuk Hisham Tepotek argued that the trial judge overlooked critical evidence
00:19of witness intimidation.
00:21He claimed that Rafiq Hakim Razali, a former Armada assistant treasurer and a key prosecution
00:27witness, was pressured by MACC officers, causing him to tailor his testimony against
00:33the former minister.
00:35The defence team also highlighted testimony from Syed Sadiq's former private secretary,
00:40who alleged she was threatened and mistreated during MACC investigations.
00:45Co-counsel Datuk Muhammad Yusof challenged the prosecution's case further, arguing that
00:50the RM1.2 million at the centre of the charges was legitimate public funding intended for
00:56election campaigns, not personal gain.
00:59On November 9, 2023, Syed Sadiq was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, fined RM10 million
01:07and ordered to receive two strokes of the cane after being found guilty on four charges,
01:12including criminal breach of trust and money laundering.
01:15The appeal hearing is scheduled to continue tomorrow before a three-judge panel chaired
01:20by Justice Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim.
