03:11Shout out to all the international students
03:13Hi guys
03:15Hi guys
03:17I know that every struggle is a struggle, so you have to face it.
03:23You have to face it, especially because they are here, they are not far away.
03:27They are close to the culture.
03:29They are close to the culture.
03:30But if they go to China, they are far away.
03:32Yes.
03:33So, let's not talk about where to go.
03:35Let's introduce our guest for today, Gab.
03:38Because he is not just talking in English.
03:42He should be able to speak Bisaya now.
03:44He should be able to speak English, Bisaya and Tagalog.
03:48He is a great guest.
03:50He is the first guest that we will be able to challenge.
03:55We will be able to challenge him.
03:56We will rate him 10 out of 10.
03:59He is good at challenging.
04:01Without further ado, let's introduce our guest.
04:07Yes.
04:08Let us introduce our guest for today's episode, which is Mr. Yang Kun Wang.
04:15Good afternoon, Wang.
04:17Good afternoon.
04:18Good afternoon, everyone.
04:20I am Yang Kun Wang from Fujian, China.
04:23I am a foreign student studying here at the University of Bisaya.
04:28My course is communication.
04:30Yes.
04:31So, how are you, Wang?
04:33Why did you agree to participate in our live today?
04:37I am so excited to be here today.
04:43You are grateful also.
04:45Yes.
04:46So, I have a question for you.
04:48When did you get here in the Philippines?
04:52In the Philippines?
04:53When?
04:54It's like July 2022.
04:58And you are already fluent in Tagalog, Bisaya, English.
05:03Yes.
05:04Maybe it's because I am a very outgoing person.
05:08So, that's also the reason why I choose to study in communication.
05:12Because I want to know about the culture here in the Philippines and also study the language here.
05:21So, I know a little Bisaya and Tagalog.
05:25May I ask the reason why did you choose to study here in the Philippines instead in China?
05:32It's actually because I want to learn more English.
05:38English is an international language.
05:42If you know how to speak English, you can go to so many countries without language barrier.
05:52For me, the English language users countries like UK, US, or Australia, the Philippines is one of it.
06:06But the free for study is cheaper than European and American countries.
06:17So, that's also the reason why I choose here.
06:20So, what's the difference between the education culture there and here?
06:25In China?
06:26In China.
06:27In the Philippines.
06:28In the Philippines.
06:29The different cultures.
06:30I think the education in the Philippines is more like fine and open.
06:38For example, you can make friends even with your teacher, with your instructor.
06:47But maybe in China, our teacher is more strict for education.
06:54So, it's too strict.
06:58So, in China, it's strict but here, it's more of like a calm.
07:05It really fits your personality.
07:09So, are you enjoying here? You're staying in the Philippines?
07:13You're studying in the Philippines?
07:15I love the Philippines so much.
07:17It's really nice.
07:19If you were to choose one, Philippines or China?
07:24It's a good question but I want to say China is one of my mother who born me.
07:34And the Philippines is one of my mother who support me.
07:40So, I love two of them.
07:43If you're going to choose, you cannot choose.
07:45Yes, both countries have significant partners.
07:50So, were you forced to study here or it was your own willing to study here in the Philippines?
08:01It's also my choice to study here because I want to learn about foreign cultures.
08:09I want to see around the world what are the different cultures between China and other countries.
08:21That's also a reason why I study here.
08:28In terms of the food cuisine, what's the difference between the local food here and there in China?
08:39It's a good question.
08:44Have you had a hard time getting to digest the food here in the Philippines?
08:52Yes, when I first came here, I'm actually not really used to eat the food here.
09:02For example, in my hometown, China is very big and we have a different food culture everywhere.
09:15So, in my hometown, we like to drink soup, like hot food.
09:21But in the Philippines, I think there is always chicken.
09:28Like balut.
09:29Yes, chicken everywhere.
09:34Do you eat balut, Phuong?
09:36Not yet. I haven't tried balut yet.
09:38You should try balut. You've been here for almost three years already.
09:44I try a lot of street food in the Philippines, actually.
09:48Like the squid bowl.
09:54Squid or square?
09:56Square.
09:58Like fish ball.
10:02Also, orange bowl. I don't know how to call it.
10:08What's your favorite dish here in the Philippines?
10:13Favorite food?
10:15Of course, Mang Inasa.
10:18So, you like chicken also, but you complained earlier that there are so many chickens here and there.
10:24Actually, I like the chicken here, the Philippine chicken.
10:28I can say it's really better than China, like the fried chicken here.
10:33Also, the roast chicken.
10:35But of course, if you eat chicken every day, maybe you're going to feel like…
10:40You're becoming gay?
10:42That's the belief of the people here.
10:45That's the belief of the Filipinos.
10:47When you eat too much chicken, then you will become a girl.
10:50Really?
10:52That's just a myth.
10:55Why? Would you like to eat more?
10:59I like chicken actually, but I'm not yet to find another restaurant with all the chicken yet.
11:09So, I don't know.
11:11Lechon.
11:13I love lechon also. Lechon is from the Philippines.
11:16So, let's talk about your university life.
11:19This is what we're all about here today.
11:22Your struggles as an international student.
11:25So, in your university life, you've been here for like…
11:29Almost three years.
11:31Did you go to university directly?
11:35What challenges have you faced going to the university?
11:39No, where did you study first?
11:42I came to Cebu in July 2022.
11:47So, did you go to university right away or did you have to study English first?
11:52Not really, I went to the English academy first.
11:55I studied English academy for half a year, six months.
11:59So, that's why you became so good with English.
12:02How's your life there in the English academy?
12:04Was it fun?
12:05Yes, because we have one-to-one, man-to-man class.
12:10So, you have a progressive class?
12:13Only men?
12:15One-by-one, like one-to-one class.
12:18So, each student has each teacher, so one teacher.
12:22For listening, speaking, writing, and…
12:29What is that?
12:31Drawing?
12:33But we have a class every day.
12:36So, back when you were in China, Wang, you already knew how to speak in English?
12:42Not really, my English is really…
12:45But do you have English subjects?
12:47Yes, we have English subjects, but you know, English is not really common in China.
12:53We don't really use English to communicate in China.
12:56So, that's why, for me, I'm not really studying English so hard in China.
13:04We don't even use that, but it's one of our major subjects.
13:09And then, maybe it's because I'm not really good at studying English.
13:14You just sleep all day?
13:16You only sleep?
13:18You only sleep in your English classes?
13:20Yes, because when I hear English, I feel dizzy.
13:22When you're at English academy, you always sleep all day?
13:24When you're at English academy, you always sleep also?
13:27No, no, of course not.
13:29In China, when we have an English class, I was thinking,
13:35Oh, we are Chinese, but why should we study English?
13:38Because we don't use it in the future, right?
13:41But when I come here in the Philippines, I feel, oh my god, I must study English.
13:46Because it's a very international language.
13:49Yes, because you cannot communicate with us using Chinese.
13:52You only have to communicate using English.
13:55Yes, yes, so that's true.
13:57I'm also a very outgoing person, so if I want to make friends here,
14:03I must study English or also the local language here.
14:08Was it hard for you to want to study English?
14:11Yeah, it's a little hard, but I have to force myself to study English.
14:17Because if I want to communicate, I want to make friends here, I must study the language here.
14:24You cannot survive here without speaking English.
14:27Because most of us, or almost all of us, doesn't know how to speak Mandarin.
14:32So that's why you have to adjust.
14:34It's an international language.
14:40You can find English everywhere.
14:44So let's talk about your friends in universities.
14:48Was it hard for you to communicate with them?
14:51What were your difficulties in making friends here in the Philippines?
14:56You know, if it's in China, I think sometimes it's difficult.
15:04Because Chinese people are not really good at communicating.
15:09If you talk to them, maybe they will not talk to you.
15:13But the Philippines is different.
15:16I've been to three countries, like Thailand, Taiwan, and also Hong Kong.
15:23The Philippines is one of the very different countries I have seen.
15:28The people here are very friendly.
15:31We're known for that.
15:33We're very welcoming, hospitable.
15:36So that's what you like about the Philippines.
15:38Yeah, so you are very easy to make friends here.
15:45You have a lot of friends right now.
15:47Yeah, I have a lot of friends.
15:49It's very good for me to make friends and communicate with friends here.
15:53So what was going on in your mind when you first landed here?
15:58Were you scared or excited?
16:01Yeah, of course I was excited.
16:04You know, there are a lot of visitors from China every year to the Philippines.
16:12A lot of tourists.
16:14Yes, because the Philippines has a very beautiful island, a beautiful beach.
16:19A beautiful beach?
16:21Yes, like some fish, like whale shark.
16:27Ah, in Oslob.
16:29You've been to Oslob?
16:30Not yet.
16:32It's also one of my, you know, I want to be there someday.
16:37But I hear from my friend, they say if you've been to Oslob, you have to wake up I think 2 or 3 a.m.
16:46And then be there for five hours.
16:49The trip there from Cebu to Oslob is so far, so maybe I cannot wake up so early.
16:55So what were your first impressions here in the Philippines?
17:00And with the university you're in now?
17:04You said that we were friendly, so that was your impression of the people here?
17:10Yes.
17:12Wang, what was the hardest thing you experienced here studying?
17:19Studying, of course, is language barrier.
17:23For me, I think my English is not so good yet.
17:26So sometimes I have language barrier here.
17:30For example, sometimes I don't know what teachers speak in the class.
17:36But I will ask my instructor to let me use translator so I can understand more.
17:42So that's also one point I really like the teacher here.
17:48They will really let me use translator.
17:50They will adjust for you because they know that you really can't understand sometimes.
17:56Teachers here will help you.
17:58They're very kind to you.
18:00Especially if you're not from the Philippines, especially for an international student.
18:05How about your expenses here, Wang?
18:09Was it very different from back when you were studying in China or here?
18:14I think the study here is more fun.
18:20Especially in communication course because we have a lot of activities.
18:26We have shooting and then film.
18:32For last month, we also go to The Hole.
18:37We have interview there.
18:39The Hole? What's that?
18:41You went to The Hole to film?
18:44We have interview there.
18:46You did interview there?
18:48Yeah, that's very fun and very good experience.
18:51I saw your videos like you have been helping children in Ermita.
18:59You've been to Ermita and you give food to the children.
19:02Your recent project.
19:04You showed us the video.
19:07Did you enjoy what you're doing?
19:09Yes, that's also one of my dream.
19:13Do you love giving back to the community, Wang?
19:17Yeah, because I like to help people.
19:21Especially some child there.
19:25It's also one of my dream in future if I can.
19:30You want to be the president?
19:32If you want to be rich.
19:34If I can earn money, it's already enough for me.
19:37For my living, for my spending.
19:42I can also help other people who really need help.
19:48That's also one of my dream in my life.
19:51Wang, you told us earlier that you have a back story.
19:57You took psychology first before going to communication.
20:00Why did you choose communication or why did you shift to communication?
20:04First, I wanted to be a psychologist before.
20:14Why psychologist, Wang?
20:17Why psychologist at first?
20:19Because I want to read people's mind.
20:24I want to be a mental health doctor in future.
20:32Psychologist.
20:34Is that what you really want when you're still a kid?
20:38Yeah, that is.
20:40Because I think psychology is so cool.
20:43They can read people's mind when they see someone.
20:47But for me, for now, I think it's so difficult.
20:53Why did you shift to communication?
20:56First, it's because I think it's impossible to read people's mind so easily.
21:04They are not reading minds but they are understanding the person's behavior.
21:10It's more like understanding.
21:12You said that you were an outgoing person.
21:16So, communication really fits your personality, right?
21:21Yes, because in psychology, when we study, it's a little boring.
21:29Boring because you don't do a lot of extracurricular activities.
21:33But in communication, when I shift to communication, I feel really fine here.
21:40I think communication is more like suit me, the course.
21:45Because there's a lot of activities and I'm also a very outgoing person.
21:51I like to communicate with people and I like to have some activities.
21:59Communication is the right program for you.
22:02Yes, very right.
22:04When you first landed here, Wang, what's the first day memorable experience you have experienced?
22:14No, let's just talk about your first day in university.
22:18And what was your most memorable experience?
22:22Out of all universities here in Cebu, why University of the Visayas?
22:29For me, because when I came here, I actually searched the university online.
22:37And then, you know, 2022 is the year just after pandemic, right?
22:42Yes.
22:45I know University of Visayas is a very good school in Philippines.
22:54And that's why I enrolled in the U.V.
22:59Because University of Visayas is, I think it's top five universities in Cebu.
23:05Top six?
23:07We're not sure, but I think it was top six back then.
23:13I don't know right now.
23:15We don't know that right now.
23:17Okay, so continue.
23:19I hear there's also because U.V.
23:23There's not so many schools that accept foreign students in Cebu, actually.
23:27And U.V. is one of it.
23:29They are very inclusive in terms of foreigners.
23:33So that's also the reason I came here.
23:36In our University, Wang, what surprises you the most?
23:41Surprise?
23:43What were the things?
23:45The first is, we have so many activities in school.
23:49Because in China, we don't usually have so many activities.
23:53You just have to study, study, study.
23:55It's really a little boring for our study life.
23:59But in the Philippines, it's really fun.
24:02But we have a lot of worksheets, right?
24:04Worksheets, yes.
24:06So what's the other thing that surprised you the most?
24:11Other things?
24:13How about the culture or the relationship of the students and their teachers?
24:19They are very…
24:21They just make fun of you.
24:24Oh, yes.
24:26They're just jamming to guys.
24:28I think our teacher here…
24:31Very friendly.
24:32Yeah, it's friendly and fun.
24:37In our country, our teachers are just always strict for education.
24:43But in here, our teachers, sometimes they will even make jokes with us and make us fun.
24:50Yeah, that's the point.
24:52I really like the education here.
24:54So what ways did you adjust to the local environment here, Wang?
25:03How did you adjust?
25:05How did you cope up with the environment, the culture here?
25:08Especially those people who are making fun of you when you cannot pronounce the words better.
25:15At that time, before.
25:17How do you handle them?
25:22That's one point I think I have to improve.
25:26So I will tell myself to improve more.
25:29And that's also something like they push me going.
25:36Yeah, and I will just tell myself to improve more.
25:41You know, that's nice that you seek for improvement because there's always room for improvement.
25:46We cannot just study English for three months or six months and then we're good at it.
25:50We're studying English for like almost half of our lives.
25:55Do you know that?
25:57Because in the Philippines, we always have English subjects.
25:59Since we were six.
26:01Yeah, since we were six, we were studying English.
26:03And then we're not very good at it.
26:05This is the reality of being a student.
26:09It is about discipline and choosing the right words.
26:12Yeah, because you're not just gonna improve right away.
26:19You're not gonna be an English teacher right away.
26:23You have to practice.
26:25Work hard for it.
26:27That's what you're doing, right?
26:29That's very nice.
26:31You keep on improving.
26:33I'm so proud that you were able to handle things in our society.
26:42Because I know that we could be a little rude.
26:48Very rude?
26:49Yeah, very rude, especially to the foreign people or foreign students.
26:53Honestly, we're very welcoming to foreign students.
26:57But there are circumstances when we're rude.
27:03I'm really glad that Wang is not one of them.
27:07He just supports people.
27:10He's outgoing.
27:12He's very into funny things.
27:16Wang, we did an interview for another international student in our school.
27:23We will watch it today.
27:25And we will see what are their thoughts and experiences.
27:30And their struggles also in the university life.
27:34And going here in the Philippines.
27:36Let's watch this guy.
27:46My name is Flavia Chomba.
27:50I'm 27 and a Zambian.
27:53I came here in the University of Visayas to learn from my sisters.
28:00They encouraged me because they had one of their brothers who studied from here.
28:05But since I'm an international student, some of the challenges I have is that...
28:12The first one is language.
28:15Language is the biggest thing, especially when it concerns communication.
28:21Maybe in the GC, sometimes I need to interpret what is being said.
28:28And also, just having a difficult time because of the type of curriculum here they have.
28:40Because in my country, it's really different.
28:42We don't have this kind of quizzes every day.
28:48Even the type of exam is different.
28:52So those are some of the challenges, I would say.
28:59I'm Vivian, and this is Joy.
29:04We were asked to share some of our experiences as international students in the Philippines.
29:18Overall, it's been good.
29:21We just have a few issues, like language barrier.
29:24But aside from that, Filipinos are really hospitable.
29:28They're friendly. They're kind.
29:31And then, I think some of us are missing home, far from home.
29:41So it can lead to depression and other mental health issues.
29:47My name is Joy.
29:50Most of the problems that we have here in the Philippines is mostly the exchange rates.
29:55To change our own currency to Peso and others.
29:59And then, because there's not enough time to be able to exchange the money.
30:10And then the deadlines, we'll have to meet up to pay some things.
30:14And then maybe the cultural shocks that we experienced when we came into the country.
30:19Because we're not used to Asian things.
30:22Something like that.
30:28So, while we were interviewing them, they really said that language barrier is their main struggle in studying in different countries.
30:38Because, you know what, Wang? Why?
30:42Because, given the fact that they're the directors, they really stood out to the test.
30:52And prevailed, and then slayed.
30:58Wang, rather than language barrier, what were the things that you struggled about in our university?
31:05Or not just in the university, but as an international student?
31:12Language barrier, and then I think one of it is like food.
31:22Food.
31:24How about the homesickness, Wang?
31:26Homesickness.
31:28Homesickness.
31:30Like you miss your home in China.
31:32Your life in China.
31:34Maybe it's because, not really.
31:37I think for me, it's more fun in the Philippines.
31:41So, you don't really miss your home in China?
31:44I miss China, but the food there.
31:46The food there.
31:48So, your preference is you like the food in China better.
31:53Yeah, but I like the place in the Philippines.
31:56There's a lot of Chinese restaurants here, so you can just go there.
32:00You can just go there, or it's different.
32:02It tastes different.
32:03It's different here.
32:05The Chinese restaurant here, I think I just went there maybe a few times,
32:13and I promised myself I will not be there again, because it's really different.
32:19Maybe they can only make 20 persons.
32:23Yeah, so that's one of your struggles as an international student.
32:27You know what, Wang?
32:29You know what, Wang?
32:31Gab is also from another place.
32:33Not from another country, but another place.
32:35He's just like you, but more on local.
32:38Because he's from Leyte.
32:40More like I'm familiar.
32:42He has to travel in boat, or in ship.
32:46And you have to travel in airplane, right?
32:49I'm from the province.
32:52Which island?
32:54Leyte.
32:56Have you been to Leyte?
32:57Ex-Philippines, right?
32:59What do you mean ex-Philippines?
33:01I know Leyte Island.
33:03It's near Surigao.
33:05I'm not sure.
33:07I'm not sure.
33:09He's not quite sure.
33:11But the point here is, you have different cultures from us, but what is good?
33:18Also, I do experience culture shocks here.
33:24You're in the Philippines, so you're the same.
33:25What was your culture shock in the Philippines?
33:28You can relate.
33:30My culture shock here while I'm studying here was,
33:34they call the teachers miss rather than mom, mostly.
33:40And it's just about the people.
33:43They're more very showy.
33:46They're more like talkative.
33:48They're very fun.
33:50They're very into something spicy.
33:52Like they're liberated.
33:54Which is nice since I'm really seeking for a place where it is liberated,
34:02where no one will judge you.
34:04I think there's judgment along the way, but I don't care.
34:10At least liberated, very light.
34:13How about you, Wong?
34:15What was your culture shock here in the Philippines?
34:16For Gabs, just say earlier, when you come here,
34:22in your island, you call teachers mom, but here it's miss.
34:28For me, in China, we call our instructor, we just call them teacher.
34:34Example, the teacher's last name is Wong.
34:38We just call them, hi teacher Wong, good morning teacher Wong.
34:41We don't really call miss or mom like that.
34:44So that's why when I first came here, if I have some question,
34:50I would say, teacher, teacher, I have some question.
34:53But my classmate told me it's not really respectful.
34:56If you call like teacher, teacher, like that.
34:59Here we usually call miss.
35:02Miss or mom.
35:04Which do you prefer, Wong?
35:06Teacher?
35:08I think miss is more like formal.
35:12More like a friend, more like a jam.
35:15Teacher is too strict.
35:18Too formal.
35:20And also another culture shock is when I first came here,
35:26because I see the people use hand to eat.
35:32Why? Do you use your foot?
35:35Because in China, we don't really do that.
35:39But for now, I also use my hand because it's actually more fun.
35:46It's a lot better.
35:48You're learning.
35:50That would mean that you're going to be a Filipino.
35:54You're transforming into a Filipino.
35:57I think I'm already half Filipino here.
36:00Half Filipino, half Pinay.
36:01What do you do in your free time, Wong?
36:04Here and there.
36:06Back in China.
36:09In summer or Chinese New Year, I will go back to China.
36:17Sometimes if I'm not really busy in here.
36:24How about here?
36:26What do you do in your free time?
36:28Just go to the mall.
36:29Buy whatever you want.
36:31I like playing basketball.
36:33Sometimes I'm going to play with my classmates.
36:37Like my friend here.
36:39They're also playing basketball.
36:41We will play basketball at weekend.
36:43Which friend?
36:45Your classmates?
36:47Yes.
36:49They're actually from psychology or another course.
36:52They invite you to play.
36:54Yes.
36:56So that's a good thing.
36:57At least you have something to enjoy here.
37:01Yes.
37:03Wong, have you looked forward to staying here in the Philippines until you grow old?
37:10Yes.
37:12Or would you want to go back to China?
37:14That's one of my dreams in the future.
37:17I want to save money to buy a small house near the beach here.
37:27And I want to die in Cebu.
37:33Why Cebu out of all places here in the Philippines?
37:38I really like the sea here.
37:45It's really blue in my hometown.
37:48The sea here is really clean.
37:53It's very beautiful.
37:55But in China, it's not that clean.
37:57The color is not so blue.
38:00It's more dark.
38:02Why is it dark?
38:04Is it because of the trash?
38:07Maybe.
38:09China is clean, right?
38:11It's cleaner than the Philippines.
38:13I mean the sea.
38:15You prefer here than there.
38:17Coconut trees, sunlight, and the beach.
38:20And the beach.
38:22With your son.
38:23With your son.
38:25Do you imagine it with your son and your wife?
38:29Maybe in the future, I will have a girlfriend or wife here.
38:34We're going to live in the Philippines.
38:37That's very cute.
38:39Until I die.
38:41It's so romantic.
38:43Why do you always think about dying, Wong?
38:46Why do you always…
38:48You found a wife and then you're going to die together?
38:50Yeah.
38:52I think it's also a very romantic thing to die in a very beautiful place, right?
38:59Yeah.
39:01Before reaching to that point, what are your plans first after college?
39:09No.
39:11What are your plans during college?
39:13You're a second year student, right?
39:15And after that?
39:17You mean after I graduate from college?
39:20Yeah.
39:21What is your plan?
39:23I'm planning to…
39:25Be a psychologist or…
39:27But I will continue to stay here in the Philippines.
39:31You're not certain yet?
39:33You're not sure yet?
39:35But the point I'm sure is I will stay in the Philippines.
39:40But I'm not really sure yet.
39:42You will stay in the Philippines and die in the Philippines?
39:44Yeah.
39:46We will get to remember that.
39:48So you're not really sure what your future holds?
39:52You just go with the flow since you're an outgoing person, Manuang.
39:55Yes, I just finished my studies first and I was thinking about it for the future,
40:01what I'm going to do.
40:03Maybe business, maybe journalist, maybe psychology.
40:06Maybe you're going to be a host here, Wong.
40:08And then you're going to change us.
40:10Oh, really?
40:12How about you join the PBB?
40:15What? I'm not really…
40:17You're not familiar with TV shows, right?
40:21You watch TV shows in the Philippines?
40:23I watch PBA.
40:25Philippines National Basketball…
40:28Have you been there physically?
40:31Not by watching online?
40:34No.
40:36But you wish to…
40:38Yeah, but maybe it's far.
40:41I think you cannot watch PBA in Cebu, right?
40:45You have to go to Manila.
40:47Yes, after the construction of…
40:50The arena in the Philippines, here in the seaside.
40:53But, Wong, let's talk about…
40:55Have you experienced, Wong, being made fun of?
41:00Being bullied.
41:02Have you experienced that here in the Philippines?
41:04Because of your race?
41:06No, because of the way you speak.
41:09China is somehow a very controversial country in some ways.
41:15Yeah, it's true for me.
41:20Sometimes they will…
41:22Like sometimes…
41:24Not really all the people here, but some of them,
41:27maybe they laugh at my speech.
41:29They sing like…
41:31Like that.
41:33But for me, I'm okay.
41:35Just like a joke.
41:36I'm a very outgoing person.
41:39You don't mind them?
41:41I don't really mind them.
41:43That's good, Wong.
41:45But for me, I'm really okay.
41:48Because I also make fun of my friends.
41:51Yeah, I know. You make fun of…
41:54We're not gonna talk about that.
41:56You also make fun of us, Wong.
41:58Yeah, you make fun of us, right?
42:00You really circle us in a moment.
42:04Maybe you're laughing at us because we can't really speak English well.
42:09Yes.
42:11Your English is better than me, actually.
42:13Yours is better.
42:15You're also better, Wong.
42:17Everyone of us here is trying to be better at speaking in English.
42:21Because we're not perfect.
42:23Are you perfect, Wong?
42:25Do you think you're perfect?
42:27Not really. I have a lot of points.
42:29I think I still can do it better.
42:30Just like last week in the cast week.
42:35I got the second runner-up.
42:40So many of my friends congratulated me.
42:45But for me, I think that's actually a point I can do better.
42:50But for me, most of my friends think I already do my best.
42:55But for me, I think I have a lot of mistakes.
42:59I have a lot of mistakes.
43:01Actually, I can get a higher place.
43:07Because my mom told me before, the first runner-up is the first loser.
43:14That's why you said you're the second loser.
43:16Yeah, so I think I'm the second loser.
43:18It's one of the points I think I can actually do better.
43:22But I didn't, so I'm a little disappointed.
43:24But you know, Wong, among the other candidates,
43:27you're the only international student there.
43:29We're all Filipino. You're the only Chinese there.
43:32And then you, you are one of those people who stood out during the Q&A portion.
43:37And a lot of students were cheering for you, actually.
43:40You were the second who stood out in the Q&A portion.
43:45And then you did your best in answering that picture.
43:49And you made your department proud.
43:51Yes, I really feel very thankful.
43:53So I want to, since I actually already, I already buy my classmates pizza.
44:00But I want to say thanks again to my, you know, the communications classmates.
44:07Yeah, they really helped me a lot.
44:09Yeah, they cheer for me and they keep me going.
44:13Yeah.
44:15Do you have any plans on joining pageants again like that?
44:20Yeah, maybe future.
44:24Yeah, I'm gonna join again.
44:26But I'm really, you know, nervous for it last time.
44:30Yeah.
44:31It's okay. It's your first time.
44:33It's natural also because, you know, I'm into pageants.
44:38But during my, even if it's not new to me to join pageants,
44:42I still get nervous, very nervous.
44:44My hands are shaking.
44:46That time when we were paired together, I'm like, I don't know what to do.
44:50Like that.
44:52But at least we did our best to represent our department.
44:55You told me you were forced to be our ambassador.
44:59Because Gab is, look at her.
45:03We're the only guy in the department, Wang.
45:07Yeah, we have no choice but we still have to do our best.
45:12So what are your advice, Wang, to incoming international students?
45:17What tips can you give them?
45:21Just the most important, I think, is you have to be prepared.
45:28Like, especially to study here, if you are confused,
45:33you have to be prepared to ask your classmates,
45:37to ask your instructor, like, what's your confusion?
45:40And ask them for help.
45:43Don't be shy like that.
45:45And so you can get better.
45:48Yes.
45:50You have to ask in order for you to know what you're curious about.
45:53And then you can be a better person for it.
45:56Yes, true.
45:58That's what tip you can give to the other international students.
46:03So what are your...
46:05Aside from that, Wang, do you listen to Filipino songs?
46:11What is your favorite Filipino music?
46:14Filipino songs?
46:15Actually, I hear a lot but I cannot remember.
46:20Or do you prefer Chinese songs?
46:23I like...
46:25Yeah, of course, Chinese songs because I'm Chinese.
46:30But I also like the Filipino songs here because I've been to some music bars.
46:35Yeah, you've been to a club.
46:38Sometimes, yeah, not often.
46:41Since you've mentioned that you're gonna spend your life here with your partner and your kids,
46:48which do you prefer, a Chinese woman or a Filipino woman?
46:54I don't think you can define it for Chinese or Filipino.
46:59It's kind of like...
47:02Who's gonna love you more?
47:05I don't know how to say that word.
47:06But when you meet someone, it's not really important if it's Chinese or Filipino but...
47:15As long as you feel the connection.
47:17Yeah, that's the point.
47:21So how about your subjects in our program, Wang?
47:26Do you struggle with them?
47:28Like our subjects, course.
47:32Do you struggle with it?
47:34Understanding it?
47:36Yes, yes.
47:38I really have some...
47:40My English is not so good so sometimes in the class, I have a hard time to understand what the teacher is saying.
47:49So I will ask my classmates and also I will ask the teacher, can I use a translator?
47:57So I can get more understanding.
48:01I will get...
48:04I will learn more for that.
48:07That's also one thing.
48:09Since you always say that you're gay, but now we're live.
48:15So which do you prefer again?
48:18A woman or a man?
48:23In an honest way.
48:25Girl, for sure.
48:27I'm just making jokes with my friends.
48:28I'm a gay.
48:30Why do you make jokes with Sir?
48:33Sir really believes that?
48:35Really?
48:37Because Sir asked me in the morning.
48:41He said, Wang, are you gay?
48:46Gay means gay, right?
48:48Yes.
48:50I know gay.
48:52This is mine.
48:55Because sometimes they're going to make jokes with me.
49:01I know it's just a joke.
49:04They will ask me in the class.
49:07I love someone in the classroom.
49:10You love Gwen, you like Sherlyn, you like Gab.
49:16So I will just tell Sir I'm actually a gay.
49:20So he won't ask questions anymore.
49:23So you don't like talking to Sir Next Door?
49:26No, Sir Next Door is a really good person.
49:30If I'm a gay, I will have a crush on him.
49:40Do you have any girlfriends right now, Wang?
49:43For now, not really.
49:45Okay, Wang Sir.
49:47Do you have one last...
49:49Would you like to have a chat?
49:51Would you like to say something one last time before we end our program today?
49:56Actually, I want to say something about fake news.
50:01When I first came here, a lot of my classmates asked me,
50:07Wang, is it true that Chinese people eat dog and cat meal?
50:15What's cat and dog meal?
50:18We eat cat and we eat dog or something like cockroach.
50:23Shumai.
50:25Cockroach.
50:28Exotic food.
50:30It's actually not true.
50:33But we have freedom.
50:37For example, you can have a business about dog meal restaurant in China.
50:43It's actually legal.
50:45For real, they have some dog restaurant in China.
50:50But it's really few.
50:53I think 90% Chinese, especially like me, I never eat dog and cat before.
50:58So it's actually fake news.
51:03Also, like...
51:06How to call that one?
51:08When a mother born a baby, there's a connect with the...
51:13Some people say...
51:14What do we call that?
51:20Some people say we eat that thing also.
51:23It's actually also my first time to hear that.
51:27We eat or you...
51:30They say like Chinese people.
51:31They ask you that.
51:33Chinese people...
51:35I don't even know what is that.
51:38I was also get shocked.
51:40It's also one of the fake news.
51:42So this is a reminder for us to not believe in everything we see on social media.
51:47Because not everything that you see or you...
51:52You accumulate in social media is true.
51:55You have to do fact-checking first.
51:57That's a good thing that your classmates ask you.
52:00Because they wouldn't know if you didn't tell them.
52:03Yeah, yeah.
52:04They will think maybe it's a bad thinking.
52:07Yeah, they are bad to think about it.
52:09For us people, we should ask questions to those who are here.
52:14Those who are experienced.
52:17Before we end our episode today, Wang.
52:20Would you like to have some shout-outs for your classmates, for your family, for your teachers?
52:25Yes.
52:26I want to thank all my teachers and students and classmates in UV.
52:34Thanks for support and give me a chance to be here in Sunstar.
52:41Yeah, it's really thankful.
52:43Thank you everyone.
52:44And we are also grateful for you to be able to accept our invitation.
52:49Because guys, if you invite him on Tuesday, he will be okay.
52:53It's very hard for us because he has a schedule.
52:57Then we have to excuse him for a while for your classes, right?
53:00So before we end, someone asked in the comment section if you have a friend that translates the lesson for you.
53:12What do you mean by translator, Wang?
53:14Like an app?
53:15Or during discussion, you use a translator?
53:18Of course, it's an app.
53:20Application.
53:21Because you know, I think I'm the only foreign student in our department.
53:34You have to use a translator.
53:35I think it's very understandable that you use a translator.
53:39You're not from the Philippines, really.
53:41So it's okay, Wang.
53:42As long as the teacher gave consent about it and as long as you're not using Chachapiti.
53:49Then go for it.
53:52Of course, only translator, not Chachapiti.
53:54Because eventually you will learn how to do things our way.
54:01We have to be honest to our teacher, right?
54:03Yes, you have to be honest.
54:05Is that true?
54:06Yeah, of course.
54:08So Wang, this is the end of our episode today.
54:14Did you have fun in our little interaction?
54:18Yeah, I'm really happy shooting here.
54:24Yeah, and we're also very grateful for you.
54:27For coming here.
54:28Yeah, for coming here, for lending us your time and also giving us your insights about international students here in the Philippines.
54:35And for sharing your life and experiences here in Sunstar.
54:38Yeah, so we have a little certificate for you.
54:43Certificate of appreciation.
54:46Let me read the citation.
54:48This certificate of appreciation is proudly presented to Mr. Yang Kun Wang in grateful recognition of your invaluable contribution as a guest on Campus Chronicles.
54:59Your insights and experience have significantly enriched our program and inspired our audience.
55:04This certificate is awarded in appreciation of your generosity in sharing your time and knowledge.
55:10Given this 19th day of March 2025.

55:16And Angelina Shanna, the Executive Producer of Campus Chronicles.
55:21Thank you so much.
55:23Congratulations, Wang.
55:24Congratulations for winning.
55:26So you're not second runner-up anymore.
