00:00Let's break it down, welcome in CBS Sports senior writer Matt Norlander and CBS Sports
00:04basketball analyst Tim Doyle.
00:06Tim, that last play from a defensive perspective was pretty bad for a team that's top ten in
00:12defense in Maryland.
00:14Yeah, that was just everybody watched the ball and you're taught as a defender see ball
00:21see man and it was just that they totally butchered it at the end of the game.
00:25There's no other way to say it and you know it's easy for us to sit back and break it
00:29down but right here when the ball is inbound to Vlad Golden, let him dribble it up.
00:33Like watch how two guys go towards him and then oh no, now Trey Donaldson's got momentum
00:39and it was almost like Matt, I don't know if it was for you but it was like slow motion
00:44watching him.
00:45It was like stop the ball, stop the ball, stop the ball and instead he makes a really
00:48tough finish.
00:50This was an amazing college basketball game.
00:52I think these two teams both legit have final four capabilities.
00:56I love the fact that Maryland fought back even though they looked dead in the water
01:00but oh boy, Matt, they mishandled that last play pretty, pretty bad.
01:05Yeah, that was a great, great call by the great, great Bill Raftery as that was playing
01:11out.
01:12He specifically identified Donaldson and Maryland's need to get a man on him.
01:15That didn't happen.
01:16He goes coast to coast.
01:17I was with Michigan in the locker room a few weeks ago when it blew a big lead at home
01:22against Michigan State.
01:23I heard Dusty May challenge his guys in a way that I've never heard Dusty May speak
01:28before and essentially said we need to get right.
01:30We cannot continue to do this.
01:31Guess what happened?
01:32They continued to lose down the stretch.
01:33They just got beat by this Maryland team a few games ago to win this game after blowing
01:38a 15 point lead.
01:39Who knows what's going to happen on Sunday in the title game against Wisconsin from Michigan's
01:42end of it.
01:43But I thought that this win and the way that they were able to pull it out at the end was
01:47critical for Michigan's psyche going into the NCAA tournament regardless of if they
01:51win tomorrow against Wisconsin or not.
01:53They did not give away the game after blowing yet another lead.
01:57Michigan's big bugaboo is turnovers and not being able to sustain big time leads late.
02:01That was a huge, huge result for Dusty May's club.
02:04Trey Donaldson scoring the final five points for the Wolverines and now make it 12 conference
02:09wins by four points or less this season.
02:12That's the most by any D1 team in the NCAA tournament era going back to 1938.
02:18Yes, we track that kind of stuff.
02:20Right now, Michigan entering the day as a five seed.
02:24We're going to be talking about seed scrubbing come Sunday because Michigan, perhaps a seed
02:29line bump if they can win it all on Sunday on CBS.
02:34And let's get right to the site.
02:35Welcome in Bill Raftery, Grant Hill.
02:37Two phenomenal games on CBS men this afternoon.
02:41Raph, that final play from a defensive standpoint, that was disappointing from Maryland's standpoint.
02:49Well, you know, it's a tough situation, obviously, because you doubled up on the inbound, maybe
02:56the logical receiver, but you leave the quickest guy all alone to inbound and just the finish
03:03Grant alluded to as well.
03:04I mean, the play was wonderful.
03:07The reaction by Maryland wasn't quite what they should have or would have wanted, but
03:11still in traffic to finish.
03:13That was pretty magnificent.
03:14That was a beautiful play there down the stretch.
03:16You called it.
03:17I mean, a lot was happening, but like both teams were so worthy of winning and both teams
03:22making plays down the stretch in both games.
03:25You know, just what a day of basketball and, you know, Michigan, they had the lead.
03:31They let Maryland get back into it, but they stayed resilient.
03:35They showed their character and found a way to win Donaldson.
03:39This is a different team.
03:41This is a team now that has incredible momentum going into tomorrow, but also into next week
03:45in the tournament.
03:47The contributors, they need them.
03:50They do.
03:51Roddy Gale's got to do his job.
03:52Burnett's got to do his job.
03:54And obviously Donaldson, you know, not that you found yourself because he's a good player,
03:59but maybe now he'll assume like taking over the field general.
04:04And we always maybe go to Wolf a little bit more, maybe go to him a little more consistently.
04:0815 lead changes.
04:09I agree.
04:10I mean, sometimes, you know, as a player, you go through a slump and you forget what
04:14it...
04:15It's incredible.
04:16It's incredible.
04:17And, Grant, when you consider that they had a 15-point lead and they're able to hold on,
04:23what does that say about Dusty May, his coaching ability, and his kids, the two bigs, Danny
04:27Wolf and Vlad Golden, down the stretch?
04:31Well, Raph and I talked about it a little bit off camera, but just the adversity of
04:36the last couple of weeks of Michigan, going through some tough times, but then figuring
04:41it out.
04:42This last week, getting a chance to get back to who they are, I think that has served them
04:46well thus far in this Big Ten tournament.
04:48They came out, played very well against Purdue, had a great game here today, and really just
04:54played with so much energy, so much emotion, and a lot of toughness.
04:58And as Raph said, everybody contributed.
05:00You know that the big guys are going to...
05:02You can pencil them in for double-doubles on a nightly basis, but getting contributions
05:07from everyone, that's who they are, that's who they've been most of the season, and that's
05:11what they're going to need to do going forward.
05:12You hate to say losing teaches you.
05:14You had mentioned this during the game, but that week off, going over things you did wrong,
05:20just not being in the right position or gambling on passes, I think that whole week helped
05:24them, and it certainly proved it today.
05:27Twelve conference wins by four points or fewer this season for Michigan, including a win
05:31against Wisconsin back in December.
05:33Grant, when you look at these two teams, you see them up close and personal on this day.
05:38How do they stack up in the title game?
05:41Well, hopefully the game will be as exciting as the games today, but both teams very well
05:50coached.
05:51They have bigs who can do a lot of different things on the floor.
05:54You know, of course, Wisconsin has Tonje, who is just dynamic and can score, so who's
05:59going to match up from Michigan with Tonje to try to slow him down?
06:03But you know, you've got two teams playing good basketball at the right time of the season.
06:08That's what you want, and I think we'll have a great matchup.
06:10Yeah, the threes of Wisconsin and the power game maybe of Michigan.
06:14I love it.
06:15There it is.
06:16Can't wait.
06:17Look forward to seeing you men tomorrow on CBS, Michigan outlasting Maryland.
06:21They'll have a date with Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship on CBS.
06:25Bill Raftery, Grant Hill joining us here on CBS Sports HQ.
06:27Men, thanks for the time.
06:31All right, thank you.
06:34So here it is, the Big Ten Conference Championship game set for Sunday, 3.30 Eastern on CBS.
06:41Sometimes these games don't have an impact on seeding.
06:45This game's going to have impact on seeding because entering the day, Michigan was a five
06:49seed, Wisconsin on the three line, and you're sitting here going, okay, well, this is going
06:53to have an impact here come selection Sunday, and you will see it go down.
06:58On CBS, also streaming live on Paramount Plus.
