There's been a bit of a movement on TikTok for users to stop using the broken heart emoji (💔) and start using the wilted rose emoji (🥀) instead. But why is the change happening, and how did it start?

00:00Astute observers may have noticed that in comment sections and memes online,
00:03they're seeing a lot less of this, and a lot more of this.
00:06But where did the broken heart emoji go, and whose idea was it to replace it with this wilting flower?
00:11It seems that the internet consensus is that people are sick of seeing this broken heart
00:15emoji everywhere, and this was seemingly first vocalized by TikToker YGBTway on February 21st,
00:212025, who posted a video of a man dancing with a text caption reading,
00:25broken heart emoji lowkey starting to become too mainstream. I might just start using wilted
00:29flower emoji. The video garnered some viral attention, as the idea was also shared by other
00:34users in the following days. Videos imploring people to start switching over their sadness
00:38emojis would appear, often in captions written on viral meme videos. Many of these claimed that the
00:42switch was inspired by players of Dandy's World. As these spread, it seems they actually had an
00:47influence, as the wilted flower emoji would pop up more and more in comment sections. Users made
00:51all kinds of memes and content referencing the changing of the sad emoji guard. What's the emoji
00:56you use when you're like sad, you know? Probably the broken heart emoji. You can leave my house.
01:00Of course, this arbitrary switching of emojis was parodied, and became a meme in itself,
01:05as users pointed out more and more alternatives to other emojis that are decidedly too mainstream.
01:10Top 10 emojis that we will be using instead of the heartbreak emoji because it has gone
01:13mainstream. These would see spread mostly among the hood irony circle of TikTok called JugTok.
01:18Many memers and commenters would pair both the broken heart and wilted flower
01:22emojis in their content as well, seemingly referencing the meme but refusing to take a side.
