As speculation grows around Matheus Cunha’s future, the big question for Wolves is whether they’re prepared to say goodbye to their star man this summer.
Without Cunha’s incredible form, Wolves could easily be fighting at the wrong end of the table, and replacing his influence would be a huge challenge if he moves on.

00:00Mateusz Kunia has been a crucial figure in Wolverhampton Wonders' battle for survival
00:07this season, with his performances often proving the difference in tight matches. His pace,
00:14technical ability and knack for scoring vital goals have made him a standout player for
00:18Wolves, especially during a campaign fraught with challenges. Without Kunia, it's hard
00:23to imagine where the club would be. I spoke with Charlie Halfonden of Birmingham World
00:28to discuss his importance to the club, their survival bid, his potential departure and
00:34what the club could face if they lose such a vital player.
00:38Charlie, with Wolves and Mateusz Kunia now, obviously we've mentioned multiple times he's
00:44been one of the star men outside of the so-called big six this season. His numbers have been
00:49remarkable, some of the goal catalogues he's got have been incredible and this stems back
00:54at the back end of last season. Notably, I remember us discussing his goal away at
01:00Nottingham Forest where he just kept dribbling, kept running. That goal was magnificent but
01:06it seems like he's outclassed that this season. He's gone a level above. He was so good under
01:11Gary O'Neill and that obviously went downhill. Then Vitor Pereira comes in and maybe questions
01:18a bit of an attitude issue but then he still pops up with some magnificent goals and that
01:23performance at Molineux against Aston Villa was magnificent. There's been some top performances,
01:30top goals for him and Vitor Pereira's side. It's a bit of a difficult one sometimes with
01:36his attitude etc. The red card decision away at Bournemouth maybe pushes the first snowball
01:43in an avalanche for Wolves because Matt Doherty ends up then taking a penalty and misses and
01:48Wolves are out of the FA Cup again. What do you make firstly? Let's just look at him
01:54and his quality. He's been amazing for Wolves this season and you actually have to question
02:00where they'd be without him.
02:03I think the word talisman certainly comes to mind when you talk about Matthias Kuhn here
02:07and I don't even know if that word exaggerates enough just how unbelievable he has been for
02:12the football club. Imagine where Wolves would be without him. I think firmly in that relegation
02:16zone alongside the likes of Ipswich and Southampton and Leicester. His goals have brought so much
02:23quality but also so many points in the Premier League this season. Every single win that
02:28Wolves have managed Matthias Kuhn has scored a goal in so far and in two of the four draws
02:33he's also had a goal involvement, either a goal or an assist in those matches. Just simply
02:38incredible numbers. He might not be scoring the winning goal every week but he also just
02:42props up in such key moments. Driving with the ball through the centre of the pitch,
02:46playing it wide, getting back in the box, getting in great positions, showing great
02:50skill. Able to pick out the top or bottom corner from range we saw against Liverpool.
02:55Fantastic goal from nothing and Anfield gets Wolves back into the game. Of course, no points
02:59in that one but of course he propelled them back into that and then the goal at Bournemouth
03:04was just unbelievable. The movement on the ball, sensational. I think the new Premier
03:09League ball, the throwback ball, really showing the movement on it as well. The lines on it
03:13just showing the impact it can have in the back of the net. Goalkeeper had absolutely
03:16no chance but then, as you mentioned, he does have a bit of a poor attitude at times. He
03:21can be a loose cannon and that red card, it could prove to be costly, couldn't it?
03:26Yeah, of course. In terms of Wolves' running now, obviously they will miss Kuhn, yeah,
03:32but let's go a bit more forward to the summer. We've mentioned his new deal, how important
03:37tying that down was. It does come with that release clause, that clause that at 25 years
03:43of age, clubs are going to look at him, look at his impact in a real struggling Wolves
03:48side this season and think, you know, that's nothing. Just above £60 million is absolutely
03:53nothing for a player of his quality.
03:55Yeah, I think we can expect movement in the summer, absolutely. If Wolves stay in the
04:00Premier League, which we probably would expect them to with the gap that they've got at the
04:03moment, maybe he can consider staying. But I just think with so many different clubs
04:08interested and different sides in the top four Champions League positions needing a
04:13new attacking player, Arsenal maybe springs to mind or Liverpool when Arne Schlott reportedly
04:19wants to get rid of quite a few of his attacking players as much as they've been incredible
04:23this season. He wants to revitalise his attack and potentially Kuhn could be the man to do
04:27that for them.
04:28I don't think we've even seen the best of him just yet because, of course, with all
04:32due respect, at Wolves, the players around him simply aren't at his level. Can you imagine
04:36what he could do in a team full of players like him? It's a bit of a scary prospect and
04:40unfortunately I think Wolves fans might have to say farewell this summer.
