00:00You're not quite getting the distance with a driver that you should be. We're
00:07going to break down the simple points at setup and the simple movements that we
00:11can make in the swing to start to optimize the distance for the driver but
00:15firstly let's look at the differences between hitting an iron compared to a
00:19driver. Now an iron, the golf ball is on the floor and we typically need to hit
00:23the golf ball with a downward attack angle where we hit the ball and then the
00:27turf after. However the driver, it's got a lot less loft on it, it's on a big tee
00:32so we need to start to hit up onto that golf ball a little bit more. That's going
00:36to really help firstly optimize those numbers to try and carry the ball
00:41further and give you a lot more distance. Let's look at the setup first. So firstly
00:45to really encourage us to create this upward attack angle we're going to have
00:50to put the golf ball further forwards in the stance and when we say forwards it's
00:54more towards the target. So you can see what I did there at setup, I had the feet
00:58close together, the ball towards the left foot and I took a small step with a left
01:03foot and a bigger step with the right foot and you can see how far forward now
01:07that golf ball position is so it's almost just inside the left heel. What I
01:13also did is took a bit of a wider step so this is going to give us some
01:16stability. This driver is a lot longer, well it's the longest club in the bag, we
01:21swing it a little bit quicker so we need the stability from the ground. You
01:26can see already as I move the golf ball position forwards in the stance how my
01:30shoulders have now tilted and just to be wary of here as we move the
01:35golf ball forward in the stance what typically happens is our shoulders start
01:41to point a little bit more to the left. What often we see with
01:46instruction with driver is that we need to tilt a lot more towards the right
01:50side so the right shoulder gets nearer to the right pocket but what happens
01:54when we move the ball position forwards is that the shoulders point more left so
01:58we have to counteract that just by sitting the right shoulder back so don't
02:02worry too much about sitting your right shoulder down. So that's a couple of
02:07points at setup, ball position forwards, wider stance, we're going to softly sit
02:11this right shoulder down and now we're ready to launch this driver. A really
02:17easy point that we can do with the motion now is maybe think about how we
02:21load into this backswing to help optimise the attack angle. So a really
02:27good little simple point you can do is imagine the chest, centre of the chest,
02:31the sternum or the zip through the middle of my top here is actually
02:35working more towards the right foot here. I quite often see with people with
02:41drivers that they'll lean into the golf ball this way and that really is going
02:45to encourage that downward hit, the ball's going to spin too much, it's
02:48typically going to slice off to the right as well so let's give those points
02:52a go. So ball position forward, wider stance, just softly sitting that right
02:57shoulder down and I'm going to encourage my chest to rotate and work more towards
03:03the right foot. You can see that motion there is really bringing this club into
03:08the golf ball on that upward attack angle, let's give these a go.
03:15Okay so we can see there the ball was brushed off the tee, not much contact
03:24with the tee peg there and you can really see how my body was really
03:28working towards the right side, almost gearing myself up to let these arms go.
03:34So really simple points that you can take away there for the driver to start
03:37maximising the distance. A nice drill that you can do to further encourage
03:42that upward attack angle, you can simply do with a head cover. Now everybody's got
03:47a head cover that they can use or a glove or perhaps a tee peg in the way so
03:51we're going to take the head cover and we're going to put it just maybe one foot
03:54past the golf ball on the target line and I really want you to just flatten
03:59that down there. Okay so you can really start to build the picture for how this
04:04is going to start to increase this attack angle. If I get this wrong I'm
04:07going to start to lean left, I'm going to hit down onto that golf ball and my
04:11golf club post-impact is going to carry through and you're going to batter that
04:15head cover. So let's make sure that we put those setup points in play, we're
04:19going to get over to the right side and we're going to try and sweep that golf
04:22ball off the tee and avoid hitting that head cover. Let's give it a go, ball
04:26position forward, wider stance, just sitting that right shoulder down, moving
04:31to the right and avoiding that head cover.
