Joe DeLeone and Ryan Roberts break down 2025 NFL Draft prospect from Alabama football, Jalen Milroe. Tune in for a full Jalen Milroe Scouting Report
Transcript
00:00Jalen Milrow is the true third best quarterback in this class.
00:04Here's why.
00:08Apparently the NFL loves Jalen Milrow as the possible third
00:12quarterback selected.
00:14Why does he separate himself from Jackson Dart and many others?
00:18Well, I think love might be a little bit too strong, but I do
00:21still think that there is a lot of people around the NFL that
00:24are fascinated by Jalen Milrow and the talent that he brings
00:27to the table.
00:27And I think when you compare that specifically to other
00:29quarterbacks, Joe, that will obviously do during this video.
00:32But then in future videos, it's the arm strength, it's the
00:35athleticism, like it's just a different tier of just overall
00:39physical tools.
00:40Is he there as a passer?
00:41Is he going to be ready to play in 2025?
00:44The answer to both those questions is probably no, but
00:47when you compare it to Jackson Dart, who's a fine athlete, but
00:50has just average to below average arm strength and some
00:52other quarterbacks that have deficiencies, if we're talking
00:55about a kid to gamble on somewhere in the second round, I
00:58do believe that the NFL likes Jalen Milrow and those tools
01:00enough to be able to, to be able to pull the trigger on him
01:04sometime early in the top 50.
01:06Right.
01:06We talk about, when we look at the upside here with him, you
01:09could see somebody who could be a plus starter in the NFL.
01:12Now the percentage of him actually succeeding and becoming
01:14a plus starter, that's a separate conversation.
01:17It's going to require a lot of work.
01:19We'll talk about his weaknesses in a second, but where the
01:22excitement comes from, this is a big athlete, a guy that can
01:25move and is fast despite being listed at over 220 pounds.
01:30He picks up, picks up speed in a hurry, and he's also
01:33got a pretty strong arm.
01:35The problem that we look at when we look at his tape, the
01:37decision-making is brutal.
01:38The decision-making is all over the place.
01:41He has had three different offensive coordinators in three
01:44different years, two different head coaches.
01:46I feel for Jalen Milrow, but he was really hamstrung by the
01:50circumstance of what he went through.
01:52That's why I give him a little bit more grace than somebody
01:54like Jackson Dart, because if the tools can be unlocked and
01:57there's patience with him and he goes somewhere in the second
02:00or third round, there's a possibility he could pan out
02:02and actually start for a team.
02:04Well, I think neither one of us are jockeying for him to be a
02:06first-round pick, right?
02:07We're jockeying for people to understand that there is still
02:11developmental upside with a Jalen Milrow.
02:13He's still a younger quarterback.
02:14He's just a fourth-year player coming out and he left a
02:17fifth-year on the table.
02:18And there was moments the last two years we saw in
02:212023 under Tommy Reese.
02:23He showed a lot of improvements down the stretch of the season.
02:252024, Kaelin DeBoer, things started out in a really good
02:28spot, but then he kind of fizzled down the end, but the
02:30rest of the team also fizzled down the end.
02:33There are obvious deficiencies on the table, but if you are
02:36going to a situation where you could be patient and you have a
02:39good developmental plan for Jalen Milrow, there is still
02:41talent there to utilize and to harness.
02:44Yeah, the talent is certainly there.
02:46And I think that when he was coming out as a recruit, we all
02:50saw the talent of what he could be.
02:51There's a reason why Nick Saban was willing to invest in
02:54him as a possible starter, despite Bill O'Brien telling
02:57him he wasn't a quarterback.
02:59This was a four-star recruit per 247 sports.
03:02He was the 14th ranked quarterback in the class and the
03:0518th overall prospect in the state of Texas.
03:09What else is there to know about Jalen Milrow's background?
03:12Yeah, I mean, like you said, he was a dual-thread kid coming
03:14out of Tompkins High School in the state of Texas, but there
03:17was a lot of excitement around him going to Alabama.
03:19He didn't play a ton.
03:21His first couple of years, and then he had the opportunity
03:23as a Richard sophomore to be able to fight for that starting
03:26job along with the likes of Tyler Buckner, Ty Simpson.
03:29And he was able to win that job out, even though he was
03:31probably by some viewed as a little bit of the wild card
03:35in that race.
03:36So we have now seen the production take upticks at times.
03:40We've seen a lot of great moments.
03:41This is a young man that no matter what class you dub him
03:44into from an athleticism perspective is about as good as
03:48we've seen come out in several years, which is why he was
03:51a top 100 recruit coming out of Tompkins by multiple platforms
03:54and is why Alabama Nick Saban took a chance on him back
03:58in that recruiting class.
03:59It's really funny when we go back and we're looking at his
04:02tape now of when he was a recruit and the talking points
04:06on him then and the talking points on him now were high
04:09ceiling.
04:10He just needs some work and he's taking steps forward.
04:12He's improved.
04:13He's physically gotten stronger.
04:16He's added the build that he needs to be an NFL quarterback.
04:20But for some reason, though, over that period of time, the
04:23decision making just still never fully got there.
04:26The reason why I just brought up a second ago could be the
04:28driving force of having so many different offensive coordinators,
04:31especially not having one that didn't really believe in him.
04:34But that has always been the biggest talking point with him
04:37as a former recruit.
04:38And then now as a draft prospect is not having the instinct
04:43to be a playmaker consistently.
04:46Right.
04:47Well, and that's the that's the boomer bus quality to Jalen
04:51Milrow, right?
04:52The boom is strong arm athlete.
04:55There's a lot of upside there.
04:56But the bus factor is quite simply, Joe, at some point you
04:59have to say we keep talking about upside.
05:02Sometimes it's got to actualize into on field consistent
05:05production, right?
05:06We've seen it in spurts, but it has not been consistent.
05:09There might honestly, in the end, there might just be a lack
05:12of understanding of playing the quarterback position at
05:16a high level.
05:16This might just be a great athlete and great talent playing
05:19the quarterback position.
05:21We don't know that for sure yet because he hasn't gotten the
05:24NFL coaching up until this point.
05:26But if we're talking about this, we're having the same
05:29conversation within the next two years or so.
05:31That's probably not a good sign that he ends up.
05:34He's not going to end up hitting his ceiling.
05:36Now we had to dig a little bit deep for talking pro comp for
05:40Jalen Milrow.
05:41We were trying to come up with someone current.
05:42I keep pitching you on Jalen Hurts, and you have shot me
05:45down 100 times out of 10.
05:48You like Aaron Brooks out of Virginia, who played for the
05:52Saints for a period of time and had a little bit of success.
05:55203 pounds coming out of college.
05:58He was listed around six foot four, so he's a little bit
06:01bigger and leaner.
06:02But why do you see that comparison?
06:04And why do you feel comfortable with that?
06:06Because they were both tremendous athletes.
06:09Aaron Brooks actually was the because he wasn't was.
06:12He is the cousin of Allen Iverson, and he comes from that
06:15lineage of the state of Virginia, where he played high
06:17school football.
06:18And he is an incredible athlete, and he was an incredible
06:21athlete.
06:22And during his time with the Saints, he would make some
06:24ungodly throws.
06:25I remember during the quarterback challenge days.
06:27Joe, he went.
06:28Oh, my God.
06:28Yes, he, of course, won like 75 yards, bro.
06:30Like he had one of the strongest arms in the NFL during that
06:34time.
06:34He was a tremendous athlete.
06:35He used to make some magic happen, but there was
06:38inconsistencies.
06:39The accuracy was spotty.
06:40The decision making was spotty.
06:42It's the same with Jalen Milrow.
06:43All the strengths that Aaron Brooks had as a football player.
06:46Jalen Milrow also has his running ability, his ability to
06:49throw the football with high velocity.
06:51But the inconsistencies are what scares you, and the
06:54inconsistencies are what could potentially hold someone like
06:57Jalen Milrow back like it did with Aaron Brooks when he
06:59played for the Saints.
07:00Hopefully, Jalen Milrow can pan out.
07:02At the very least, he can be a contributing backup on a
07:05roster.
