The mayor has said the ULEZ zone has definitively reduced pollution in outer London after a City Hall commissioned study revealed a drop in pollutants
Transcript
00:00When the mayor extended the London ULEZ zone to cover the whole of London, he created the
00:08world's largest pollution charging zone. A report commissioned by City Hall found nitrogen
00:16oxides emissions from cars and vans across the whole of outer London were estimated to
00:22be 14% lower last year than they would have been without ULEZ. They found the
00:29level of decreases were 15.4% in Sutton, 15.3% in both Croydon and Merton and 15.2% in both
00:38Bromley and Harrow. All these councils expressed their opposition to Labour Mayor Sir Sadiq
00:45Khan's decision to expand the zone while Conservative-run Bromley and Harrow were also part of a failed
00:53attempt to stop the policy through a judicial review. While the mayor has praised the report,
01:00saying the report shows ULEZ has been successful in reducing pollution, Colin Smith, the leader
01:07of Bromley Council, criticised the one-size-fits-all lunacy of ULEZ expansion, claiming it has
01:16quote-unquote destroyed care networks, forced people to change jobs and created a huge financial
01:22expense for people and businesses having to buy new vehicles they did not want or need.
01:30He added that the mayor would have focused on reducing pollution on the London underground
01:37if he was quote-unquote genuine with his claim that expanding ULEZ was about air quality.
