00:00 I said from the outset that the decision to expand the ULIS to include all of London,
00:04 out of London in particular, was a difficult one.
00:07 But I think it's the right thing to do.
00:08 Why?
00:09 Because the evidence shows that air pollution leads to around 4,000 chromatographed deaths
00:13 in the area I see, air pollution leads to children having study lungs forever,
00:17 and adults with a whole host of health issues from asthma to cancer, dementia to heart disease.
00:21 And the early results show the ULIS expansion is working because 95% of vehicles seen driving
00:28 on an average day are cleaner vehicles.
00:31 We know in central London there was originally some concern and opposition,
00:34 but the results showed almost 50% reduction in toxicity.
00:40 A third fewer children being admitted to hospital because of air pollution.
00:43 We expounded in London, there was concern originally.
00:47 More than 20% improvement in air quality, more than 500 schools benefiting from cleaner air.
00:52 And I'm really pleased now in out London, you know, the number of vehicles that are complying,
00:57 are similar still, the vehicles complying in central and inner London.
01:00 And we'll be seeing the benefits now of 9 million Londoners breathing cleaner air.
