00:36use smartphones or tablets by hand.

00:39But did you know that handwriting is still a big thing?

00:43Writing is also used as a basis

00:46to see if a child has a neurodevelopmental disability,

00:50like ADHD or autism.

00:53In studies,

00:5460-80% of kids with neurodevelopmental disability

00:59have a handwriting impairment.

01:02To help with early detection,

01:05an AI-based SmartPen was created

01:08that can write.

01:10Short for

01:11Intelligent Stroke Utilization Learning Assessment and Testing.

01:16Headed by Engineer Edison Rojas

01:18of the UST Faculty of Engineering,

01:20the College of Rehabilitation Science of the University of Santo Tomas is located here.

01:25It was funded by the DOST Philippine Council for Health Research and Development.

01:30Handwriting is a window to a child's development.

01:35Just by holding a pen

01:38in writing or stroke patterns,

01:42we can get an idea

01:45if this child has or does not have a handwriting impairment.

01:50What is written?

01:52There are sensors to record every stroke,

01:56the in and the out of stroke.

01:59It is also AI-based for a quick and accurate assessment.

02:03In the traditional way,

02:05they use handwriting manuals that are not cheap.

02:09With the use of our pen,

02:11we replicate the way of analyzing

02:16traditional handwriting manuals.

02:18And because this is for children aged 6 to 10 years old,

02:22they also made a gamified app

02:24to keep the children engaged in the assessment.

02:27We will now hold this smart pen

02:31that we will use in the test.

02:33And the gamified app is projected here.

02:37Currently, the RightQuest has 15 levels

02:40where the child will be asked to write different shapes and letters.

02:44While writing, it records the stroke pattern,

02:50the in or pressure,

02:52the angle, and the speed of writing.

02:56According to Engineer Edison,

02:58handwriting assessment tools like this

03:01are very useful to help occupational therapists in the country.

03:06It is also more accessible for remote areas.

03:10It was also written in the last National Science Innovation Week of DOST.
