The Commanders have a ton of pending free agents, which ones do you think they will retain?
Transcript
00:00All right let's go through the commanders free agents to be here with the league year starting
00:05up a week from now. I want to decide if we think that they're going to get a deal in place with
00:12each of these players before the league year starts. We'll begin let's go in the order of
00:18how much guys made last year that in some way should be also an order of importance.
00:24Bobby Wagner made 6.5 million played on 99 percent of the team snaps. Will they have a
00:31deal in place with Wagner before the league year opens? I say yes. I think it's a multi-year
00:36with a race. I say no. Wouldn't be surprised but I think maybe he goes to market and then
00:43possibly comes back. So what's going to happen is he is he going to go like hey Pete Carroll
00:46called or a couple other guys that might be be invested there. Yeah why not I mean he could
00:52see what else is out there and just kick the tires on a couple other situations and maybe come
00:56back. I don't know why he'd be tied to the commanders. I think he probably wants to be
01:00here though and I'm sure that they want him here but I've said this about wide receiver today.
01:05This is my bigger point about his position. I would like to get younger and faster. That's
01:11going to be a theme for me when we talk about this team. I love Bobby Wagner. I want Bobby
01:15Wagner on the roster. Do I need him to play 99 percent of snaps as a 35 year old next year?
01:20I don't think I do. I would like him here. I'd like him in the dressing room to be
01:24the alpha. I want him to lead the speech run out of the tunnel with the boys holding the
01:28American flag. I want him to play plenty. He's still very good but I don't need him every single
01:33down on the field. I think the path to being a better defense a scarier defense might be with
01:38more speed at that position. Marcus Mariota backup quarterback made six million bucks. He's 32 years
01:44old. Played 8.6 percent of snaps last year in the two games where he played a half a football or
01:50more actually played really really well. So I don't think something will get done in advance.
01:54I think because of that little sample that you reference people are going to go hey he was a
01:58model citizen as a backup quarterback. That's worth it to us to have him in the room mentorship
02:02maybe spot time starter for a couple teams that are in transition. I actually think he goes to
02:06market and gets a raise. I think he stays but I think it's after the league year opens. This will
02:12be a day one day two day three a Mario to resign two years in 11 mill or whatever the number is.
02:19Jeremy Chin made four point one million dollars last year. He's 27. He played 94 percent of
02:26defensive snaps. This is the first one I'm going to say. I think they get a deal done with Chin
02:31ahead of free agency might be decent a little money for him to on a multi-year deal. I thought
02:36he was good enough that you already have enough needs on defense. You don't want to create another
02:40one by letting him walk. I think they get a multi-year deal done with Jeremy Chin lockstep
02:45there with you the safety market. I don't want to say saturated but there's there's a couple other
02:49Jeremy Chin's point is that you're not going to stand out in that marketplace because he's not
02:53exceptional. He's good. I thought he played well here. He'll be in line for a couple years and a
02:57little bit of a race. Remember last year Kim Curl hit the market and couldn't find anywhere. I was
03:02totally wrong about that. I'm going you got to do it. You got to do it and they were totally right.
03:06I mean his dad on social was like floating 15 million dollars a year and talking about
03:10how much money he might make and I think he got six million or something to go to the Rams. Yeah
03:14a KJ Osborne the former Viking and Patriot barely played with Washington at all. He played 22 percent
03:22of snaps on all the teams he was on but not here. I mean he's very very sparingly used
03:27four million dollar player last year. I would say no chance he resigned. I don't think so. Yeah
03:32Cleland Farrell got hurt only played 34 percent of snaps 20 years old 28 years old 3.7 million
03:38dollars last year. I think they took a radio flyer last year. I think it's a fare thee well.
03:42I don't think he signs before the uh the the new year. Agreed. Here's what I think gets done.
03:46Tress Way the punter 3.3 million last year. I think Tress signs a multi-year deal to finish
03:53his career in Washington. He'll be 35 this season. I think so too. That's the holder
03:57Tress Way please and thank you. Dante Fowler Jr. ten and a half sacks last season despite
04:03only getting 1.4 million guaranteed and 3.2 million overall in his one-year deal he's now 31.
04:10He played about half of the snaps 52 percent of snaps that tells you about his ability or you
04:16know lack thereof against the run and the fact that he's kind of situationally used just as an
04:20edge. He also only had two sacks in the final 10 games he played in when you count the three
04:25playoff games that all complicates things. I don't think they have a deal in place by the time the
04:30league year starts. I don't think so either and this is one where you and I differ. I think he's
04:34going to go to the open market and get more than we think. I think someone's going to be so desperate
04:37for pass rush that they'll say damn it it's worth it and he'll get double digit million dollars.
04:42That's my prediction. You think he makes 10 million dollars a year? Wow yeah I'll be surprised by that
04:48because he's he's not two-dimensional. I don't know if you could pay a guy with an injury history
04:54who's had two big sack seasons ever 10 million dollars to be one dimensional. I wouldn't but
04:59I think somebody's going to be desperate. Michael Davis man did he struggle when he played last
05:04season. 12 percent of snaps made 3.2 million dollars. I would say he's going to hit the
05:10market and be looking for work. I'll say if they do that I'll be very upset so I imagine him going.
05:14What a bargain this was. Three million dollars last year for Zach Ertz. 66 percent of snaps will
05:20be 35 years old. This one's tough. I will say Ertz gets a contract before free agency starts
05:31and they sign him to like a two-year deal for 16 million with the first year guaranteed or
05:38something like that. Maybe he gets 10 million guaranteed and if they want to get out of it at
05:42the end of the year they can pay him a couple million and be done. I think so too. I think
05:46it's one of those he'll get his multi-year and the second year will be much kinder in terms of
05:50off ramps cap their friendliness etc. But by staying healthy and producing and becoming as
05:55important to the offense and to Jaden Daniels and the coaching staff as it seemed like he did
06:00I think he's going to get a nice raise too. Part of why he only got to three million was
06:04I remember you and I have in the conversation he's going to play six seven games but then he
06:08played the whole year and was and was better in the second half than the first. I mean
06:12none of the things that happened for him last year made sense to me or were things I would
06:15have predicted. Yeah I loved the addition and I thought if he could play he could still be good.
06:20There's no reason not to think it's not like his game you need speed or twitch or wiggle or
06:24whatever. Yeah it wasn't very much money great for that room. The quarterback's best friend is
06:28a safety valve who's not necessarily about explosion anymore but body control goal line
06:32short yardage type stuff absolutely was a positive player. So we're getting into the next tier which
06:36is kind of cheaper players and it's always easier I think to just not have to worry about it you can
06:41re-sign these guys because they don't make the team it's not the end of the world if you move on
06:46but let's uh go through some of these names. Cornelius Lucas their swing tackle he's actually
06:51pretty important. I played on 40 percent of snaps believe it or not now he's older than you think
06:56he is. Come on strong for the end of his career here but at 34 years old coming off of making
07:012.8 million I actually talked to him at the Super Bowl on Radio Row and had a nice conversation with
07:07him and he basically suggested that he does want to be a starter. He wants to be a starter here
07:12but overall he would love the opportunity to finally prove that he could do that at the end
07:16of his career. So that's going to make it hard I'm going to say he does not re-sign with the team
07:21they've just got so many balls in the air on the offensive line in a tackle I don't think you want
07:26to box yourself in by paying him. Yeah I think maybe this is one of the I don't think a deal
07:30is in place before the league year I think he might go out and see hey is there a starting
07:34opportunity for me I think the legal say not really and he'll end up back here. Michael Dieter
07:41I don't believe this it says he played 19 percent of snaps but I don't think that's right I guess
07:45it's possible because of all the bionic on and off injuries yeah Allegretti got banged up Cosme
07:50obviously got hurt in the playoffs he was playing both guards and center at different points only
07:54made 1.8 million if I could bring him back at sub 2 million dollars I could easily get a two-year
08:00four million dollar deal done with him ahead of free agency and just have one extra body to throw
08:04at the interior offensive line issue you think they lock it up before it starts why not I mean
08:10again it depends he's not a guy to me that has a big market it's not like I've got to wait to see
08:15what the other teams think hey man you can stay here you don't have to move and I'm going to give
08:19you a two-year deal for four million and by the way you know only 1.8 or whatever is guaranteed
08:24so if they cut them then you just wear that but you don't have to do that there's probably 30
08:28of him available but after last year he knows your offense yeah I'll I'll guess that they
08:33re-sign him for a very small deal I could see that as well because he you know filled in I think at
08:37three different spots at various points Trent Scott I'll say no deal agreed Alameda Zaccheaus
08:43played 42 percent of snaps made 1.2 million does he re-sign before the start of the league I don't
08:48think he does now I think this would be another one where he wants a raise wants to go out and
08:52say look what I just did 45 catches and part-time duty I can be helpful anyone anyone and then maybe
08:57he comes back after that but I think this will be one of those everybody got something out of
09:01last year you outperformed your contract certainly you were valuable to us we don't want to break the
09:06bank for you but go see what you're worth and if you don't get it you're more than welcome back
09:09here is our fourth or fifth wide out I'll agree to that I could see this one Noah Igbenagany
09:14made 1.2 million at 26 years old now he should be a guy that would want to test the market because
09:19I think he's got decent enough tape that he could get a pretty good raise but with their corner
09:24problems but Benjamin St. Joost is going to hit the market Lattimore is a big question mark to me
09:29I know they don't seem to publicly feel that way but I think they should based on his injuries
09:33recently and how he played that's a guy I'd want to bring back I would get a deal done with him
09:37ahead of free agency it's not going to cost you a lot you just need some quantity forget the quality
09:43for a moment you need some bodies in the secondary he did well enough to be one of them he's still
09:47only 25 by the way two years younger than St. Joost I think of him as a veteran a guy that's
09:52been around because I guess he's still you know relatively young when it comes to that so I could
09:57certainly see that I kind of had a different impression in my mind where older player not
10:02making that much wrong 25 only made uh or was making never mind I can't speak I think they
10:07signed him before free agency starts they let St. Joost walk they let Crowder walk issues there
10:14no agreed Deami Brown I think hits the market after his big postseason and tries to shop a
10:20little bit I do too I don't think he comes back I think somebody's going to say we saw enough
10:24potential that we're going to make you we're going to overpay you for uh the production you're going
10:28to bring Sheldon Day I'll say they re-sign knowing that Allen is likely out you guys missed the
10:33report earlier this hour according to Michael Silver he's saying Jonathan Allen will be released
10:38if he's not traded by the commander's silver reports for the athletic I'll say based on that
10:44they re-up with Sheldon Day on the cheap as their third defensive tackle lock in there yep
10:49any other names that are interesting no Brown oh I'm going to say no around they
10:53they try to bring back but I don't think he'll sign before coming off of a serious injury I'll
10:56say that nothing happens there uh Jeff Driscoll they let walk Jalen Holmes probably let walk uh
11:02Jeremy McNichols I think you let walk I think he's going to walk yeah replacement level type guy
11:07the kickers both of them Zane Gonzalez and Austin Seibert I think they both hit free agency I do too
11:12I think you got to try to do better by the way Brandon McManus just I was going to bring it up
11:16three-year deal at five million per for the Packers they liked what they saw basically the
11:20deal I think Washington signed him to last year but a little more money because he uh he did a
11:25nice job other free agents include Kaz Allen Chris Rodriguez Derek Forrest John Bates and uh
11:33Jeff Driscoll the backup quarterback what about Bates by the way Bates they'll get a deal done
11:36with I agree with that uh do you think they'll let Rodriguez walk yeah I'll say they will him
11:43and Robinson are a little bit redundant you know unless you're moving on from B Rob which I don't
11:48think they are then in my plan you're going to getting a speed back who's your RB1 and Robinson's
11:55your change of pace that makes it now you've added a running back Chris Rodriguez was already your
12:00four yep I don't know if you need him and Robinson you know in that conversation
