Jon Machota, Cowboys writer and insider for The Athletic, joined the GBAG Nation in the wake of Zack Martin's retirement to discuss how they'll replace the future Hall of Famer, what the team will end up doing with the money they freed up from restructuring Dak's contract, whether or not the team is interested in drafting Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, and more!

00:00So the Cowboys opened $55 million in cap space, John, and Jerry says he doesn't look at free
00:20agency as a way of filling voids on the roster.
00:24How does all that make sense?
00:25What are they going to do with that money?
00:26I know when you see that you're thinking, all right, maybe they will make a move for
00:30some big name player.
00:32Maybe they are a player in this Miles Garrett sweepstakes.
00:35No, I think that's more for, I do think that they'll add some pieces in free agency, but
00:40I don't think it's going to be those day one, two, or three guys.
00:44You know, I don't, they still need help at defensive tackle.
00:46There's, you know, Jerry will say that they can, they don't have a lot of voids that they
00:51need to fill and that they can handle most of it in the draft.
00:54I think he knows, and he's just saying that right now, that there are some things that
00:57they have to do in free agency.
00:59But with that, bringing up that money, I think that that puts you in a good spot to obviously
01:03bring back like they did Osa.
01:04I think the same happens with Jordan Lewis, probably Rico Doudle, and maybe a few others.
01:10And so maybe Chunky Golston or someone like that.
01:13And so I think that's what it is more so than making a big move like folks are hoping for.
01:18So we talked to Jerry for about 10 minutes and after he was done, we talked to Steven
01:21for another, you know, five to 10 minutes.
01:24And you know, it was specifically asked to Steven about the idea of possibly trading
01:29a high pick for a proven veteran player.
01:32And he just did not sound like he had any interest in that at all.
01:35And so basically that would be like, you know, like right now today talking about DK Metcalf
01:39or Myles Garrett and stuff, they just do not sound like they're interested in that because
01:43it's not only do you have to give up that high pick, whatever it's in this draft or
01:46the next, but then you also have to pay that player too.
01:49And I just don't, I don't get the sense that they're going to be a big player for paying
01:53guys.
01:54Now, what could be possible are trades like the Gilmore, like the Brandon Cooks trades
01:58in the past, where those are lower level one-year deals.
02:02The team that's trading them takes on some of the money.
02:04That's the type of stuff that I think that their offseason will look more like two years
02:07ago, but it's not going to look like an Eagles offseason.
