00:00Billions worth of illegal cigarettes and machinery were destroyed by the PIR today.

00:08This is part of an investigation to find out how some people escaped from paying the right taxes.

00:17Christian Vascones is in the center of the news.

00:22More than 2 billion pesos worth of 14 million packs of illegal cigarettes and machinery were destroyed in a waste disposal facility in Porac, Pampanga.

00:33Under the leadership of Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagi Jr. and the Mayor of the Municipality of Porac,

00:40the cigarettes were burned through a thermal decomposition process using a gasifier machine.

00:47After burning the cigarettes earlier, now they are destroying the machines used to make the cigarettes smuggled here in the country.

00:58The value of unpaid taxes for the confiscated cigarettes and machinery is up to 6.4 billion pesos, including penalties and surcharges.

01:08According to the PIR, the simultaneous destruction of 17 revenue regions throughout the country was done

01:15to show the public how serious the government is in enforcing the law

01:20against the illegal shipment of smugglers in the most severe operation of the agency.

01:25First, Commissioner Lumagi said that the PIR filed an 8.5 billion pesos tax evasion case

01:31against the individuals involved in the operation of an illegal cigarette manufacturing factory and three other warehouses

01:38that were raided by the authorities in Bulacan and Valenzuela.

01:41Lumagi said that the filing of a criminal case shows how serious the agency is in enforcing the law

01:50in collecting the right taxes, especially for those who smuggle smuggled items in the country.

01:56Of course, if it is collected, it will be of great help to our countrymen

02:01because part of what is collected here goes to the healthcare of our countrymen.
