On Sunday, February 23, around 500 people gathered at a crime rally at the Kempsey Racecourse, organised by Member for Oxley Michael Kemp, calling for tougher laws and real action on crime.
Transcript
00:00Stronger laws, safer streets. Justice for victims, no excuses for criminals.
00:15Make the time fit the crime.
00:19I've had 17 home invasions and I've had 20 cars stolen and they're not all in related incidents.
00:28You know, they're separate incidences. So that makes for 37 at least.
00:33And I'm only one of heaps and heaps of people in the Macleod that have had the same thing.
00:41I'm so glad that the government is looking at this.
00:44I'm so glad that Michael Kent has funded, self-funded today this whole event
00:50to give the community an opportunity to come here
00:54and to know what's in the pipeline as a way for us to move forward.
00:59Because we have to move forward. This can't keep happening. It just has to stop.
01:04I think we need change. Enough is enough and our community is fed up with the level of crime
01:08and the level of violence that's happening in our community.
01:11We need to see some change. We need to see some legislative change
01:14around the bail laws and around tougher sentencing.
01:17We've just seen a recent introduction of $2.7 million into the Kempsey community
01:21around diversionary programs and looking at the root cause of crime.
01:25That is a fantastic pillar to start off.
01:27Now we're calling for increased and toughened legislation.
01:31Don't be scared. Be safe.
