11:41administration has cancelled
11:43now a news report suggests that this
11:4521 million dollars wasn't
11:47sanctioned for India but was sanctioned for
11:49Bangladesh way back in 2022
11:51Trump has said that the grant
11:53was aimed at increasing voter
11:55turnout in India this news report
11:57says that no there was no USAID
11:59grant linked to polls in India
12:01since 2008 essentially the money
12:03has never come into India as a grant
12:05especially linked to elections linked to voter
12:07turnout and it's happened not happened in
12:09India since 2008
12:11now Trump has also
12:13said that they were trying
12:15to get somebody else elected
12:17so he's saying essentially
12:19that in the 2024 election
12:21this money was used to try
12:23and change what the people's
12:25voice was the mandate to change
12:27it completely the news report
12:29however that's come to the fore now that
12:31claims that this money was actually for
12:33Bangladesh claims that there are records
12:35that show 13.4 million dollars
12:37grant already spent of the
12:3921 million dollars in Bangladesh
12:41the BJP is maintaining that
12:43while this news report says 21 million was for
12:45Bangladesh there's no confusion whatsoever
12:47that when President Trump is talking
12:49about 21 million dollars of aid to India
12:51is there really a question of
12:53it being meant for Bangladesh
12:55and the President Trump got confused between
12:57the two so you're seeing this kind of
12:59back and forth taking place which the
13:01BJP is saying is in
13:03fact money that was used to try
13:05and rig the election by
13:07the opposition by the Congress

13:11that's doing the rounds constantly in the
13:13course of this entire USAID
13:15funding fight that's happening
13:17this is the agency's

13:23she's a lawyer and
13:25in fact has played a big role
13:27in this particular
13:29agency reportedly funds
13:31went up while she was heading it

13:35has called for an investigation into her
13:37role because of the USAID funding
13:39jumping from 2021 to
13:412024 during her tenure

13:47I guess they were trying to get somebody else

17:17frozen United States Agency of
17:19International Development or the USAID
17:21operations, crippling the
17:23world's largest humanitarian
17:25programs. But what is
17:27USAID and why has it become Trump's
17:29latest casualty?
17:31Let's begin from the very start
17:33Why was USAID created?
17:35Well, it was established by
17:37President John F. Kennedy during the Cold War
17:39in 1961 to counter
17:41Soviet's influence through foreign
17:43assistance. Congress passed
17:45the Foreign Assistance Act to formalize
17:47this effort, making USAID
17:49an independent agency
17:51Although the Soviet Union collapsed
17:53in 1991, USAID
17:55continued to thrive, playing a key
17:57role in U.S. foreign policy
17:59albeit a controversial one
18:01So, I know you're
18:03all wondering, what does USAID do?
18:05Well, it's by far the largest humanitarian
18:07and development arm of the U.S.
18:09government, with a workforce
18:11of approximately 10,000
18:13people around the world and
18:15an annual budget of tens of
18:17billions of dollars. In
18:19some regions, it supplies food, shelter
18:21and access to clean water. In
18:23others, it supports global networks
18:25of disease surveillance and biomedical research
18:27that help local populations
18:29Critics say that USAID
18:31has practiced a form of soft
18:33power worldwide, allowing America
18:35to keep a friendly presence in developing
18:37countries, including countries
18:39that are key strategic allies
18:41So, which countries are we
18:43talking about here?
18:45Well, the USAID had projects in
18:47around 130 countries in 2023
18:49according to the Congressional Research
18:51Service. In 2023
18:5370 of the 77
18:55countries the World Bank determined
18:57to be low and lower middle
18:59income countries received USAID
19:01assistance. The scope
19:03of USAID's work is extensive
19:05War relief in Ukraine,
19:07police building in Somalia, disease
19:09surveillance in Cambodia, vaccination
19:11efforts in Nigeria, HIV
19:13prevention in Uganda, maternal health
19:15assistance in Zambia. I can go on and
19:17on. That list is very, very long
19:19So, did USAID also have a role
19:21in India?
19:23Well, several reports indicate
19:25that over the last 15 years, USAID
19:27granted more than $270 million
19:29to organizations
19:31affiliated with George Soros
19:33One such organization, the East-West
19:35Management Institute, partnered
19:37with Soros' Open Society Foundations
19:39and received USAID funding
19:41This revelation has fueled
19:43concerns over the U.S. government's role
19:45in political movements
19:47In America, a senator,
19:49John Kennedy, has claimed that USAID
19:51also funded transgender
19:53clinics in India. And then you have
19:55a former U.S. State Department official
19:57Mike Benz, who's claimed that he
19:59has proof of USAID's direct
20:01interference in Indian affairs and how
20:03opposition-fueled protests were funded
20:05All of this has led to
20:07the BJP alleging that USAID-funded
20:09organizations have created
20:11unrest in India
20:34So where does all this money come from?
20:36Well, the Congress approves
20:38USAID's funding each year
20:40The humanitarian agency then works
20:42with Congress and the White House
20:44to set its investment priorities
20:46while the State Department provides it with
20:48foreign policy guidance
20:50The money is paid out through grants,
20:52through contracts and cooperative agreements
20:54In 2023, the agency
20:56disbursed a whopping
20:58$44 billion
21:00Ukraine was the top recipient
21:02receiving almost 37%
21:04of that funding
21:06Close to $17 billion in USAID
21:08funding in 2023 went to
21:10addressing governance issues
21:12is what has been quoted, noting that most of that
21:14again, was headed to Ukraine
21:16Additionally, around $10.5 billion
21:18went to addressing
21:20humanitarian issues
21:22$7 billion was set aside for health
21:24$1.3 billion went to agriculture
21:26Other major programs funded
21:28or managed by USAID in 2023
21:30include $811 million
21:32for the Global Fund
21:34to fight AIDS, tuberculosis
21:36and malaria and more than
21:38$330 million in
21:40emergency food and nutrition assistance
21:42for Afghanistan
21:44So if they're doing so much humanitarian work,
21:46why is Trump against USAID?
21:48On January 20th, his first day
21:50in office, Trump issued an
21:52executive order implementing
21:54a 90-day freeze, a three-month
21:56freeze on foreign assistance
21:58programs. According to the order
22:00and I'm reading it out, the United States
22:02foreign aid industrial bureaucracy
22:04are not aligned with American
22:06interests and in many cases
22:08antithetical to American
22:10values
22:12Tech billionaire Elon Musk
22:14who helms the Department of Government Efficiency
22:16has fired off a series of posts
22:18on X that accuse the agency
22:20of corruption, referring to them
22:22as a criminal organization
22:24and a crazy waste of money
22:26Trump has been a long
22:28time critic of overseas spending
22:30During his first term, Trump
22:32sought to cut foreign aid spending by a third
22:34but his efforts were thwarted by the
22:36Congress. In response, his
22:38administration used budget freezes
22:40and other tactics to restrict
22:42the flow of already approved funds
22:44This move was later ruled
22:46illegal under the Empowerment Control Act
22:48by the General Accounting Office
22:50So clearly another legal
22:52battle looming. The fate of USAID
22:54at this point remains 100%
22:56uncertain
23:25I completely blame the Congress
23:27government for neglecting Bengaluru
23:29because of the difference between
23:31the Chief Minister and the Deputy
23:33Chief Minister
23:35One of the biggest election issues in Karnataka
23:55every time during election season
23:57is what will be done to improve Bengaluru

24:01promises of transforming the infrastructure
24:03making the city more livable
24:05at a time that it's become so urbanized
24:07that residents are struggling
24:09the city is completely chock-a-block
