00:00Shoreditch is now one of the most creative hubs in our city.
00:04Now, I headed to EE Learn Live, where leaders of the creative industry
00:08are talking to younger generation about following their dreams
00:12and how to turn their hobbies into a career.
00:15I caught up with two men that have done just that,
00:18Sidemen Vikstar and Toby,
00:20to find out what advice they would give to those attending the event.
00:24Today I'm here to support EE Learn Live,
00:28encouraging young people to essentially chase their passions
00:32and giving them my best bits of advice based on my experience
00:36and seeing how they can apply that to chasing their passions
00:40and even just using normal skills in everyday life.
00:42Yeah, and obviously that's what you've done, isn't it?
00:44That's the kind of career you've made, it's by chasing your interests.
00:46Yeah, it's been crazy and I feel like a lot of the times
00:49you don't really get to take it in or really appreciate how far you've come.
00:53So sometimes you have to sit back and just, I guess, what's the word?
00:59Not reminisce, kind of reminisce.
01:01You have to sit back and just think about where you started
01:05and where you got to because it can all be so go, go, go sometimes
01:08and you don't really get to really appreciate the journey.
01:10But yeah, it's been fun.
01:12My advice for people is, I guess, yeah, follow the passion.
01:16The passion is what pushes you to do everything.
01:17Like, I would never advise people to chase money,
01:20although it's what we all need and it helps us all.
01:23But the passion is what really keeps you going in the hard times.
01:28Like, my journey hasn't always been easy.
01:31There's been times where I haven't seen financial benefit
01:34or it's been difficult logistically,
01:36whether that be in terms of social life, family or just balancing work.
01:40But when you're passionate about something,
01:43it makes it easier to push through the hard times.
01:45So my advice would be, yeah, follow your passions.
01:48So, yeah, the main advice I've been giving is first and foremost,
01:53have fun with what you're doing.
01:54It's, you know, if you're making content around your hobby,
01:56it should remain your hobby.
01:58And the second thing is to really focus on the skills that you're learning
02:03through creating this content, being comfortable on camera,
02:07thinking up creative ideas, learning how to edit content
02:11and really focus on developing those skills.
02:13And then any success that you see from the content is a bonus on top of that.
02:17But I wouldn't focus too much on the metrics
02:20because there are algorithms now, things go up, things go down.
02:23So the most important thing is to just keep building those skills
02:26and you'll have those for life.
02:28So, yeah, we usually sit down and have kind of big conversations.
02:32We have members of our staff who come with ideation.
02:36So they provide ideas and we sit and discuss them, maybe combine two ideas,
02:41take an idea that exists and tweak it to kind of suit what we do.
02:46And also AI, we use AI to kind of brainstorm, provide ideas,
02:51and then we let it do 90% and then we do the last 10%,
02:54that human piece and try and turn it into something new and exciting.
