00:00An academic said the perception that Chinese schools maintain stricter discipline and higher
00:06educational standards has led to an increase in the enrollment of non-Chinese students.
00:12Theo Kok-Siong said parents are of the view that Chinese-type schools offer better quality
00:16education due to their strict school principles and high academic standards.
00:22He also noted a growing concern about the quality and direction of national schools,
00:27which he said are increasingly being seen as Islamic rather than national institutions.
00:33Theo was commenting after a Chinese school in Araw Perlis raised eyebrows with an all-non-Chinese
00:38student enrollment for year one this year.
00:42Former MP Taufiq Ismail said Malaysia needed to improve its national schools, which have
00:47been declining since the early 1970s when the medium of teaching was changed from English
00:52to Malay.
00:53He said Malaysia's education system was once highly regarded, with institutions such as
00:57the Royal Military College and Victoria Institution offering world-class education.
