00:00Penang Chief Minister Chao Kuan Yew has rubbished claims that he deliberately scheduled a business

00:05trip to Japan to avoid attending DAP stalwart Lim Kee Tsiang's 84th birthday dinner in

00:11Georgetown last Saturday.

00:13Chao said the official trip was arranged by the state's business entity, Invest Penang,

00:18well before the dinner was scheduled.

00:20Speaking to FMT, he said Invest Penang made all the arrangements, including the available

00:25window for both parties after Chinese New Year and before Ramadan begins.

00:30Chao also said speculation about his absence was completely off the mark, adding that he

00:34has the deepest respect for Kee Tsiang, who brought him into politics.

00:39Chao also said he had informed the dinner organizers of his inability to attend due

00:44to his prior arrangement.

00:46An opinion piece in The Star Yesterday claimed that Chao had planned the trip to Japan specifically

00:51to bypass the dinner, which was viewed as an event to rally support for Guang'an ahead

00:56of the DAP election on March 16.

00:58This led to speculation that Chao was avoiding Guang'an amid political and professional

01:03differences in their management styles.
