00:00Admission requirements for the Diploma in Nursing Programme for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia
00:06graduates have been lowered from five credits to three to tackle the shortage of nurses.
00:12In an Utusan Malaysia report, Health Minister Zulkifli Ahmad verified a circular about relaxed
00:18entry requirements due to a critical shortage of nurses in Malaysia which could negatively
00:23impact the healthcare system if not addressed. He said the matter was presented at a Malaysian
00:29Nursing Board meeting on November 28 last year and the council members agreed to relax the
00:34entry requirements. Candidates were previously required to have five SPM credits including for
00:40Bahasa Melayu, Mathematics and one Science subject. They were also required to pass their
00:46English exam. Under the new requirements applicants will only need credits for Bahasa Melayu,
00:53Mathematics and one Science subject and a pass in two subjects including English
00:58applying only to students in the 2025 and 2026 intakes. The International Council of Nurses
01:04recently called on the government to develop a decade-long plan with a focus on better wages,
01:10working conditions, safety and career prospects in order to attract new nurses while retaining
01:16experienced staff. The council's Chief Executive Howard Catton said last November that Malaysia's
01:23shortage had been exacerbated by high-income nations hiring experienced nurses from Asia
01:28with better pay and working conditions. Pan Yujo, FMT News.
