00:00A labour activist said young Malaysians are willing to take up dirty, dangerous and difficult

00:10The Labour Solidarity and Learning Resources Association Secretary-General Gopal Kishnam

00:15Nadesan said the issue at hand was not the nature of the job, but the wages offered.

00:21He was commenting on news that students from Johor have skipped their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia

00:26examinations to take up low-skilled jobs in Singapore.

00:30Johor Education Executive Councillor Aznan Tamim said over 900 SPM candidates dropped

00:36out of the examinations, with some choosing to work in Singapore due to the lucrative

00:39pay.

00:41Gopal noted that there has been a decline in the labour share of GDP from 34.5% to 32.4%,

00:49despite the government's vow to increase the figure to 40% in the 12th Malaysia Plan.

00:55Meanwhile, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers President Soetian Lai also said many students

01:00seek such jobs in Singapore only for immediate financial gain.

01:05He said their decision was largely driven by the exchange rate advantage rather than

01:09long-term career commitment.
