00:00East Malaysians will be more fearful of PAS following the public caning of a man convicted
00:06of khalwat in Terengganu last week.
00:10Political analyst James Chin said PAS appears to be going all out to push for Malaysia to
00:15be a sharia-compliant state.
00:17He said doing so would make it more difficult for the party to expand its support in Sabah
00:22and Sarawak.
00:23Similarly, analyst Lee Kok Tiong believes public caning does not align with the socio-cultural
00:29backdrop of Sabah and Sarawak, which prioritizes inclusivity and autonomy.
00:34PAS has long sought to establish a stronger base in East Malaysia, where it currently
00:38has only one representative, Ali Akbar Gulasan, a nominated assemblyman in Sabah.
00:44Previously, Parti Pesaka Bumi Pucat Bersatu Vice President Atul Karim Rahman Hamzah insisted
00:49that Sarawakians would never accept PAS' ideology.
00:54Last week, PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin urged all states to follow Terengganu's lead
00:58by introducing public caning to uphold and honor Islamic law.
