00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News update for Wednesday, May the 13th. Here are the
00:09top stories at this hour.
00:11Gunmen on motorcycles killed at least 47 people in an attack on a bus in Pakistan's southern
00:17city of Karachi this morning, according to police. The attack appeared to be the latest
00:21violence directed against religious minorities this year. A police spokesman said the victims
00:26included several women, while no one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
00:32The UAE has made remarkable progress in combating human trafficking since the country launched
00:36a campaign against the problem in 2006. That's according to Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargaj, the
00:42Minister of State for Foreign Affairs. He said the causes of trafficking are often traced
00:47to source countries where the victims are susceptible to fraud.
00:51An Amtrak train headed to New York City derailed in Philadelphia on Tuesday night, mangling
00:56the front of it, tearing the cars apart and killing at least five people. Scores of passengers
01:02were injured. Mayor Michael Nutter said the scene was horrific and not all of the 240
01:07people on the train had been accounted for.
01:10North Korean leader Kim Jong-un had his defense minister executed with anti-aircraft fire
01:16for insubordination and dozing off during a formal military rally. If confirmed, it
01:21marks another demonstration of Kim's ruthlessness in dealing with even the most senior officials
01:26suspected of disloyalty following the execution of his uncle Yang Song-thek in 2013.
01:33In sports, Neymar struck twice as Barcelona reached the Champions League final by beating
01:37Bayern Munich 5-3 on aggregate in their semi-final, despite losing last night's second leg 3-2
01:44at the Allianz Arena. Barca survived a Bayern fight back to keep alive their troubled dreams
01:49as they close in on winning the Spanish league.
01:52Banished by England's cricket leaders over their deep distrust of him, Kevin Peterson
01:56opened up a new front in the Rift late last night. The maverick batsman turned the tables
02:01on the England and Wales cricket board by claiming in a newspaper column that it misleadingly
02:06gave him hope there was a way back into the team.
02:10Bollywood actor Salman Khan, out on bail after being sentenced to five years in prison for
02:15a fatal 2002 car crash, will perform at the Arab-Indo-Bollywood Awards 2015 at Dubai's
02:22Maydan Racecourse on May 29. Organizers have confirmed the event is likely to be Khan's
02:27first foreign assignment after his turbulent jail-or-bail saga last week.
02:33And finally, today's weather. Highs across the UAE will be 40 degrees Celsius dropping
02:37to 28 tonight.
