00:00Good day and welcome to the Gulf News Update for Sunday, May the 12th. Here are the top
00:08stories at this hour. Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has appealed to all
00:13parties to join him in tackling the country's problems after claiming victory in the elections.
00:18Partial unofficial results from Saturday's election showed a stunning comeback for Sharif,
00:23but he looked short of an outright majority. The party of former cricket star Imran Khan
00:28did not consider defeat, but vowed to form the next provincial government in the northwest.
00:32The Pakistan People's Party, which led the outgoing federal government, was relegated
00:37to third place. One person died and 17 were injured after the ceiling of a mosque under
00:42construction collapsed at Zayed City in the western region, police said. Investigations
00:47are underway to determine the cause of the collapse. Police described the dead victim
00:51as Asian and added that an Arab was among those injured.
00:55Colonel Ajeel Ali Abdullah, director of the western region's police department, said
01:00the ceiling caved in while the workers were pouring concrete for the roof. Turkey has
01:05warned it will take any necessary measure to protect itself after two car bombs exploded
01:10in a town on its border with Syria, killing 43 people. Turkey said it believes the Syrian
01:16intelligence was behind the attacks.
01:19Egyptian police have arrested three al-Qaeda militants planning a suicide attack on a western
01:23embassy, the country's interior minister said. Mohamed Ibrahim did not specify which
01:29embassy had been targeted, but said a quantity of chemicals had been found.
01:34In sport, Wigan claimed one of the greatest FA Cup final upsets of all time when they
01:38scored a dramatic 1-0 win over Manchester City at Wembley last night. Meanwhile, the
01:43stage is set for an emotional farewell to Sir Alex Ferguson in what would be Manchester
01:48United's last home match under him against Swansea tonight.
01:52Got about 6 million dirhams to spare? If yes, then Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan could
01:57well be dancing at your wedding. On Thursday, Khan reportedly visited Dubai's Madinah Jumeirah
02:02for a few hours and put in a 30-minute cameo appearance at a private wedding. He danced,
02:08cracked a few jokes and lent immense star power to the glittering event. For those who
02:12missed Khan this month, he will be back in September to shoot for Farah Khan's Happy
02:17New Year.
02:19And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 40 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:23to 25 at night.
