00:00In celebration of National Arts Month this month of February, DOST-FP-RDI has launched their Research and Development on Green Fragrances and Essential Oils
00:11through an Appreciation Tour and Talk, Diana.
00:15Yes, this is what they call the Scent of Innovation, Local Art and Science of Green Fragrances.
00:20And to find out more information about this, we will be joined by Forrester Florena Samiano,
00:27the Program Leader of the Flavors and Fragrances from Forest Technology Program of DOST-FP-RDI.
00:34Good morning, ma'am, and welcome to Rise and Shine Philippines.
00:37This is Diane Quirero with BN Manalo.
00:42Good morning, ma'am Diane, and to all of your followers of the Rise and Shine Philippines Program.
00:49Yes.
00:50Alright, can you tell us about your activities for National Arts Month?
00:56And what are we expecting here, and who are the participants?
01:02Yes.
01:03On February 26, we at FP-RDI will be hosting National Arts Month,
01:09and we call it the Scent of Innovation, Local Arts and Sciences of Green Fragrances.
01:16Through this, we will be promoting our R&D on Green Fragrances and Essential Oil,
01:23which is part of our Flavors and Fragrances from the Forest Technology Program.
01:28We will have an Appreciation Tour and Talk that will be attended by various local perfumers,
01:35micro, small, medium, and entrepreneurs venturing into perfumes, essential oils, personal care, and cosmetic products.
01:44We also invited a well-known artisan Filipino perfumer
01:49to share her knowledge, experience, and importance of Filipino scents,
01:55or what we call Amoy Pinoy, if we link it to our music and culture.
02:02We will also open our F3TP Fragrance R&D Laboratory
02:08so that the public can fully appreciate and understand
02:12the science behind the perfumes and fragrances that we smell every day.
02:19Perfumery as an art, very interesting.
02:22How does perfumery become a scene?
02:29Yes.
02:30Arts resonates with our five senses,
02:35like the arts of music.
02:37It resonates with the sounds through our ears.
02:41And the arts of painting or drawing with our sight, vision, and touch.
02:46Same with the culinary arts, it resonates with our sense of taste.
02:52The flavors that we taste and drink.
02:59While in the arts of perfumery, it resonates with our sense of smell.
03:05And our senses are usually connected with how and what we feel.
03:10Perfumery is not just an art.
03:13It is also part of the Filipino culture.
03:17It is a part of our Filipino culture.
03:21Cleanliness of the body.
03:23And not just clean.
03:26It's like we're not going out of the house.
03:28We should also smell, right?
03:30I also like to smell every day.
03:33Ma'am Florena Diana mentioned earlier that it's a Filipino smell.
03:36Yes.
03:37Our local brands are able to keep up with the famous international brands.
03:41Yes.
03:42The longer the smell, the more they get.
03:45And the scent is very fragrant, right?
03:47Correct.
03:48Ma'am, how big is the potential of the Philippines when it comes to making and selling perfumes and other oil-based products?
03:58Yes.
03:59The potential of the Philippines is big when it comes to the perfume industry.
04:02Simply because perfume is obviously present in our day-to-day lives.
04:07When we take a bath, the soap, shampoo, and conditioners that we use all smell good.
04:14We even choose different scents.
04:16Even the clothes we wear.
04:19We don't just wash it with fragrant soap.
04:23We still use scented fabric conditioners.
04:27Aside from that, we don't just wear fragrant clothes.
04:31We also spray perfume on our bodies and clothes.
04:36Before you go out and go to the studio, you should spray your perfume.
04:44I do it here.
04:45Because it's still here in my palms.
04:47Behind your ears.
04:48And one in front.
04:49That's how it is.
04:50Yes, ma'am.
04:51There's a routine when you put on perfume.
04:54Yes, ma'am.
04:57I read somewhere that we Filipinos,
05:00before we leave the house in the morning and go to work,
05:04or wherever we want to go,
05:07we spray around five to six sprays a day.
05:12That's equivalent to around 0.5 to 1 ml of perfume.
05:17Imagine, in a year, if we smell every day,
05:21we are consuming around 182 to 365 ml of perfumes in a year.
05:28And mind you, a bottle of perfume is expensive,
05:32especially oil-based perfumes.
05:35It ranges from 4,000 to around 6,000 per 100 ml.
05:40And it depends on the brand.
05:42Additionally, we have a lot of aromatic plants in the Philippines
05:47that can be used to cool essential oils,
05:50perfume, and other cosmetic products,
05:53from leaves, barks, flowers, and resins.
05:59With all that, this is a great business opportunity for our women.
06:04In fact, I know some women who have a business
06:08where they make perfumes and sell them easily.
06:13Well, aside from fragrances and essential oils,
06:16are there other projects in DOST that use lesser-used
06:20or less popular forest products?
06:26Yes.
06:27We use non-timber forest products.
06:33As I mentioned earlier, leaves, barks,
06:38leaves, barks, flowers, and herbs
06:42can be used to make aromatic essential oils,
06:45such as sapili resin,
06:48known in the market as Manila Elimi.
06:51We also have almaciga trees,
06:54which are grown by our brothers and sisters.
06:57Almaciga resin, also known in the market as Manila Copal,
07:03is also used in making perfumes.
07:08We also have different kinds of cinnamon trees in the Philippines.
07:12We have around 16 species documented.
07:15It is known to be used for flavoring,
07:19but when we extract its oil from leaves and barks,
07:24it provides a good scent to some perfumes.
07:29We also studied different kinds of cinnamon trees in the Philippines.
07:34We also have agarwood,
07:38agarwood or oak oil from the Aquilaria species.
07:42We also have flowers, such as ilang-ilang and sampaguita.
07:46We also have grasses, such as lemongrass,
07:49citronella grass, and vetiver grass.
07:52We also have fungus grasses.
07:54We also have bamboo grasses,
07:56which we consider to be tallest grasses.
07:58We also have essential oils.
08:00When we extract the oil from the trees,
08:04we do not throw away the waste residue.
08:11We still look for other uses.
08:16We have completed a research
08:19on the extraction of cinnamon, barks, almaciga, and pili residue.
08:24We converted it into an insect repellent.
08:30We tested it on the extraction of mosquitos and flies.
08:35It worked and it still smells good.
08:39Earlier, we mentioned that we have the flavors and fragrances
08:43from the Forest Technology Program.
08:46What we are discussing today is about the fragrances.
08:50On the other side of this program,
08:52we also have the flavors R&D.
08:56We use the plants we mentioned,
08:59such as cinnamon, bamboo leaves,
09:02and agarwood leaves for tea production.
09:06We make tea that has health benefits.
09:13We also have technology to enhance
09:16the taste and aroma profiles of our local wines and distilled spirits.
09:22We use our FPRDI Pinoy wooden barrel
09:26and we add different wood chips
09:29for the aging of wines and liquors.
09:34This year, we will start exploring
09:37woody vines extracts for cosmetic products application.
09:43There are a lot of R&D innovations that we hope will place the Philippines in the map.
09:50When Ma'am Florena mentioned this,
09:53I can smell the aromatics.
09:56It's my favorite scent.
09:59I love different scents.
10:02It's not just about the smell.
10:04Ma'am Florena also mentioned that it's good against mold.
10:07Correct.
10:08The increase of dengue cases in different parts of the country is good.
10:13Yes.
10:14Ma'am, please invite our viewers to participate in your activities.
10:21Yes, ma'am.
10:22Again, I would like to invite all of our viewers
10:27to RISE and SHINE Philippines.
10:29On February 26, 2025,
10:33we will meet at DOST FPRDI.
10:36This is in Los Banos, Laguna.
10:38Together, we will learn and enhance the scenery, culture, and science of Philippine wines.
