00:00You can recognise them by their colourful woolly hats.
00:03For the past few weeks, these grannies against the far right have been amping up their campaign.
00:08With the election coming up on Sunday, they've been hitting the streets with a key message
00:12– no place for Nazis.
00:15I hope everyone votes for a democratic party on the 23rd.
00:21There's definitely one party you're not allowed to vote for and that's this AFD far right.
00:26I can't even name it.
00:29AFD, or Alternative for Germany, is a party on the rise, securing a recent victory in
00:34September's state election in Thuringia in the east of the country.
00:38And there's a chance they could come second in the national vote, doubling their number
00:42of seats in parliament.
00:44For these women, who grew up in post-war Germany, it's an inconceivable prospect.
00:49They're determined not to let younger generations forget about the dangers of far right ideologies.
00:56Last year we took part in or supported more than 80 demonstrations.
01:00We often stand up for the Jewish community.
01:02We've been to rallies in front of synagogues, vigils against anti-semitism, as well as protests
01:07against racism.
01:11A commitment that's shared by these women in Nuremberg.
01:16I have three grandchildren and I really want to preserve democracy for them.
01:20I was lucky to grow up in peace and democracy for 58 years.
01:25They launched their campaign in 2018.
01:27At the time, AFD, founded in 2013, had just entered the German parliament, a shock to
01:33the country's political landscape.
01:35Today, the party holds 76 seats in the Bundestag and is polling at just over 20% of voting
01:42intentions.
