00:00A rare encounter captured on video.
00:05Deep in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, a young man from an uncontacted indigenous tribe emerges
00:10from the forest and makes contact with a local community. Barefoot and wearing only a loincloth,
00:17he's carrying two logs. Locals think he was asking for fire and one resident tried,
00:23without success, to show him how to use a lighter.
00:26The encounter happened in the community of Bela Rosa, along the river Purus, a tributary of the
00:31Amazon River. He returned to his tribe in under 24 hours after it was confirmed that he hadn't
00:36been exposed to any diseases. According to Survival International, an NGO fighting for
00:43the rights of indigenous groups, some 1.7 million indigenous people live in Brazil.
00:48Over 100 uncontacted tribes are also thought to live in Brazil, more than anywhere else on
00:54the planet. And in the Peruvian Amazon, last year, these images showed indigenous tribes only
01:00a few kilometres away from a forest concession. Tribes like these are increasingly under threat
01:06in the face of advancing loggers and ranchers. They're also particularly vulnerable to diseases,
01:12such as flu, to which they have no immunity.
