00:00The increasingly extreme racial and religious sentiments being expressed in the country
00:06are causing East Malaysians to regret the formation of Malaysia,
00:10claims Tuaran MP Wilfred Madius Tangau.
00:13The former APCO president said even though the cabinet had rejected a proposal
00:18for guidelines on the involvement of Muslims at non-Muslim events,
00:22certain parties were still pushing for them.
00:24He said that such voices sow the seeds of division
00:28and have led many in Sabah and Sarawak to regret the formation of the Federation of Malaysia.
00:34According to Tangau, many East Malaysians believe that today's Malaysia
00:37does not reflect the Malaysia they agreed to form under the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
00:43Tangau said the proposed guidelines should have been presented and approved by the cabinet
00:48before being announced, adding that the failure to do so
00:51contradicted the principles of good governance.
00:54The proposed guidelines faced backlash from civil society,
00:57non-Muslim religious leaders and politicians, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stating
01:02that the guidelines were unnecessary and would cause anxiety.
01:06The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah,
01:09had also expressed his disapproval of the proposal,
01:12saying the Qur'an and Sunnah already provided the best guidelines for Muslims.
