00:00Redefine the national culture to reflect Malaysia's diversity and restore the dignity of various
00:09communities.
00:11This is academic Tajuddin Rasti's call to the government, pointing out that a new definition
00:16will also help the country outgrow the past.
00:20The National Culture Policy outlines three conditions to define a Malaysian culture,
00:25namely that it must be based on Malay culture, suitable elements from other cultures,
00:29may be accepted, and Islam is an important component.
00:34A 2022 UNESCO report rated Malaysia as one of the countries with the lowest Intercultural
00:39Dialogue Index, giving it a score of 0.35 out of 1.
00:45Tajuddin, an Islamic architecture professor at UCSR University, said the rise of Islamic
00:50thought during the Islamic reform movements in the 1970s and the growth of a more religious,
00:56retiring Malay middle class, explained the low score.
01:00The solution, he said, lies in educating the Muslim clerics on topics of arts, culture
01:05and discourses in other civilizations as they wield great influence on public opinion.
01:11However, Edding Khoo, patron of the cultural organisation PUSAKA, said the ICDI does not
01:17necessarily reflect the diversity experienced by Malaysians daily.
01:22He said intercultural dialogue happens every day in the lives of Malaysians, and that there
01:27are more intercultural marriages now than before.
