00:00Academics at Newcastle University are set to strike across 14 days in protest over 300 potential job losses.
00:07The University and College Union announced that its members at Newcastle University will take strike action on 14 days before the end of term on March 28.
00:16This follows rising tensions between the union and management over £30m in cuts, previous paying promotion freezes and a 5% cut to the institution's wage bill, equivalent to 300 jobs.
00:28In addition, despite a voluntary severance scheme already in operation, the University's management has refused to rule out compulsory job losses.
00:36Newcastle University, alongside other higher education establishments, is tackling a £35m financial shortfall reported last year after a decline in applications from international students.
00:48The strikes will take place on 4-6 March, then 10-11-12, again on 17-18-19-20, then the whole last week of term from 24-28 March.
