Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have captured the second-biggest city in DR Congo’s mineral-rich East. They have captured Bukavu, which is the capital of South Kivu province. This is a major victory for the Tutsi-led M23 rebel group, who now have total control over the Lake Kivu region, which borders with neighbouring Rwanda. The rebels have already occupied Goma, Nyabibwe and Kavumu as part of their latest offensive. Kinshasa has vowed to restore order and accused Rwanda of occupation plans and grave human rights violations in the Eastern region. Meanwhile, Uganda’s military head, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has also threatened to attack a town in DRC’s east, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict. This comes as repeated calls for ceasefire and de-escalation from the international community fail. Watch this report to know more.
