St. Paul's Chapel is the oldest surviving church building in Manhattan. It was completed in 1766 and was part of the Episcopal Parish of Trinity Church.
George Washington attended services at St. Paul's Chapel on April 30, 1789, the day of his inauguration as the first President of the United States. His pew is still preserved in the chapel.
It gained renewed significance after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Located just yards from the World Trade Center site, the chapel miraculously survived the destruction.
