00:00Stress and anxiety are two of the most important mental health challenges people face.
00:16It could be work-related, it could be personal-related, or it could be some family-related struggles
00:22that people face on a day-to-day basis.
00:25When it comes to managing stress and anxiety, it's important that we deal with the root
00:31cause.
00:32Every person's struggle is different, so the treatment is in a more personalized way.
00:37The most common therapeutic approaches that we develop is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy,
00:41or what we call as CBT, and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, what we call as MBSR.
00:49In CBT, or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, we sit with the patient and try to identify
00:55the stress factors and the negative thoughts the patients face when they are stressed.
01:00We then help them in challenging those negative thoughts and developing skills to overcome
01:05those thoughts and thus reduce the stress.
01:09In MBSR, or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, patients are advised to stay and think about
01:16the present, not worry about the past or the future.
01:20In that way, they are able to calm their thoughts and develop a more healthy way in
01:24managing the stress.
01:26For some patients, stress need not occur in an isolated way.
01:31It can sometimes co-occur with other illnesses like depression or substance abuse.
01:39In these cases, it is a challenge to manage different psychiatric conditions at the same
01:43time.
01:44What we do is we do it in a holistic way where we involve psychologists and social workers
01:50to help them manage each of the conditions in a separate way.
01:55The anxiety sometimes can be aggravated by the depression or vice versa where depression
02:00can sometimes aggravate anxiety.
02:03So we need to have a multi-holistic approach where social care workers and psychologists
02:08are involved in managing these conditions.
02:12Mindfulness can sometimes be part of the treatment but not necessarily the only treatment.
02:17A balanced approach is necessary to maintain between pharmacological and non-pharmacological
02:22therapies.
02:24Medicine therapy can help in immediate relief of the symptoms and give patient immediate
02:28relief in the anxiety as well as in the depressive symptoms.
02:32One of the biggest challenges patients with stress and anxiety face is relapse.
02:38Even after successful completion of treatment, there can be some setbacks.
02:42Therefore, we do encourage the patients to practice the CBT skills like coping skills,
02:49the mindfulness-based stress reduction that they had earlier developed in their day-to-day
02:55life.
02:56Along with that, we do also encourage a healthy lifestyle like good sleeping habits, good
03:02physical exercise and a healthy diet.
03:06If at all the patients do develop stress and they see the early warning signs like
03:10sleep reduction or change in their mood, they are encouraged to come and visit the mental
03:16health professional or the doctor as early as possible.
