00:00My name is Carolyn Yaffe, I'm a psychotherapist at MedCare Kamali, and I wanted to today discuss
00:12a client that I see who happens to be struggling with stress and pretty severe anxiety.
00:19We're going to call my client Susan.
00:22Susan is a teacher and she reports that she faces extreme stress and anxiety due to a
00:30high workload and she's also balancing the role of being a mom to two young children.
00:38So as this has been going on for some time, these stresses have led her to be experiencing
00:45severe anxiety and constant worrying, even really small trivial things that mean nothing
00:53to you or I can really trigger Susan's anxiety, anything as simplistic as just the thought
01:02of being a few minutes late.
01:04What I do is we are working to help Susan not only identify her triggers, but also to
01:14manage them efficiently through CBT.
01:19We are working to help Susan reframe negative and intrusive thoughts, such as feelings of
01:28hopelessness and helplessness, not being able to see the light at the end of the tunnel,
01:34so to speak.
01:35CBT is an effective method for treating stress and anxiety disorders by focusing on the cognitive
01:43aspects of her stress and anxiety.
01:47This helps her develop coping skills, identify triggers, and this will help her reframe any
01:55negative thoughts or what we call cognitive distortions and cognitive distortions are
02:02thoughts that actually come directly through our anxiety, otherwise known as automatic
02:08thoughts.
02:09Another pivotal facet of CBT is to help Susan view her more challenging situations more
02:18clearly and respond to them in a more effective manner.
02:25In addition, we're working on helping Susan develop a more balanced lifestyle that includes
02:32good sleep, exercise, and a balanced diet.
02:36This will help with her anxiety.
02:38It also is important for her to develop a support network, a circle of friends and family
02:44that will be able to help her when she's having difficulty managing her time.
02:51Also, self-care is incredibly important, exercises such as deep breathing and meditation
02:58can also vastly help with stress and anxiety.
03:02If you are in therapy for stress and anxiety, just remember mental health is a journey and
03:10understanding it is key to overcoming any challenging situations that we may be facing.
