00:00Over the last decade or so, we're seeing that the Indian diaspora, which some estimates
00:08say is more than 30 million across the world, is beginning to play a bigger role as far
00:13as Indian domestic politics is concerned. That's largely to do with Mr. Modi, who's
00:17taken his engagement with the Indian diaspora to the next level. So his bilateral visits
00:23to other countries are not just about foreign policy. They very much have a domestic component
00:28with these big diaspora events which he addresses, which are telecast live back home, bolstering
00:33his image with the kind of reception that he gets. So we've seen the Congress perhaps
00:38try to emulate that at a smaller scale by getting Rahul Gandhi, for example, to tour
00:43the UK earlier this year, or currently, where he's on a tour of the United States, also
00:48meeting members of the Indian community, students at different university campuses, in order
00:53to drive home the Congress's political messaging. In all of this, both sides, of course, have
00:58been trading political charges at each other. But the real question is, why are India's
01:02top politicians wooing the Indian diaspora that doesn't actually vote in Indian elections?
01:08It's an interesting reason. And read the piece to find out more.
