It was a flying start at the Gitex Global 2022 in more ways than one. But of the 5,000 companies with a presence at Dubai World Trade Centre, one company did indeed make that ‘flying start’ in the literal sense. Ehang from China is an autonomous aerial vehicle manufacturer and it showcased a passenger ‘drone’ – the EH216 – at the e& (formerly Etisalat Group) pavilion.

00:00What you see here is the first fully autonomous and electrical passenger drone on this planet.
00:05You can transport up to two people for over a distance of roughly
00:0935 kilometers with a top speed of 130 kilometers per hour and the hardware is very sophisticated
00:16but the real rocket science is in the software because as mentioned it's AI powered, it's fully
00:21autonomous, you don't have a pilot, you just have two passengers who can go without any pilot know-how
00:28wherever they would like. We presented it for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las
00:32Vegas in 2016 and throughout the years we developed it into the serial model what you're seeing here.
00:39We have all the production capabilities set up already in our domestic markets, we are very close
00:45to type certifications and after that we are ready for full commercial operations but we're already
00:51in the process of project development and sales meaning we have a lot of partners who did certain
00:57pre-orders and who are willing after all the regulations are there to get into the operations
01:04so timing wise it depends a bit where we look at, at what region we are looking at.
01:09In our domestic market in the Chinese Asian environment we can expect commercial operations
01:15to happen in the next months whereas in the western hemisphere we can expect a time frame
01:21in between 2025 and 2030. UAE and the gulf regions is as always very progressive when it comes to
01:28new technologies, we have also been flying here already on a prototype basis, on an experimental
01:34basis and moving forward it depends on the local regulators so it's a bit difficult for me
01:41to make a prognosis here but knowing the passion for innovation what we can see in that region
01:48I'm pretty sure that UAE will be at the forefront also in that topic. We are now in the interior of
01:54our cabin where as mentioned you have two passengers being able to sit and what you can
01:59see here is our dashboard. Right now you can see a lot of different flight parameters what are
02:06relevant for all the operations, you have a flight map, you can even steer to a video camera since we
02:13are right now at the demo it needs some time to load in, you have all the aircraft settings,
02:19you can steer the lights here, turn off, turn on the lights but this is like a version
02:261.0 of our dashboard so moving forward in the next iterations we are making our plan is to
02:32implement here a full entertainment system meaning you will be able to distribute commercials, you
02:39will be able to integrate other digital services to enrich the customer experience of our future passengers.
