00:00If I have to say in one line, I would say that Mumbai carried on their good work, which they started from the beginning and they are leaving no stone unturned for the auction, what they did.
00:20Hello everyone. Welcome to Straight Bad with Gulf News and Mr. Cricket UAE. That is Anish Sajjan.
00:26Today was the match 56 of the IPL. Two sides at the base of the points table. Calcutta Night Riders versus Mumbai Indians. A bit underwhelming I thought. Anish, what did you make of the match today?
00:40Hello Shyam. Hi Satish. Hello Naresh. Hello Maaz and hello to all the beautiful people of Gulf News. If I have to say in one line, I would say that Mumbai carried on their good work, which they started from the beginning and they are leaving no stone unturned for the auction, what they did.
00:53Satish, what are your impressions of the game?
00:57Shyam, it was a brilliant spell by Pumra which was actually wasted and if there is one person I wanted to blame, I would squarely, squarely blame Ishan Kishan for the way he got out.
01:09He was there and it is a wicket. When you are bowling, you know what's happening on the wicket. You know that when the ball is old, you can't play those shots which you have been playing earlier. All those Calcutta batters showed that.
01:24And they were struggling between the overs 14 and 20 and newcomers are not able to time the ball and they were giving wickets. So, he was living dangerously. But after getting his 50, he should have actually continued and played a second fiddle and allowed Pollard to go for the shots.
01:44Instead, he played a big wild heave which was unexpected from a guy who costed Mumbai such a huge fortune. And I think that's where the slides started. Otherwise, maybe. I am not saying that they would have won it. But they could have taken it further. There are another 2.3 overs pending.
02:12We also welcome 2 of our fans here. KKR supporter Maaz is sporting a green today whereas Naresh is resigning to Mumbai's fate. So, let's go over to Maaz straight away. Maaz, has this been any consolation for you guys?
02:28I mean, this is kind of a performance that was expected from KKR in the start of the season as well. We had 2-3 good matches. And you know, the first 2 weeks, we were like the good contenders of the playoffs. And today, we had nowhere even in contention for the playoffs.
02:46So, you know, Venkatesh Iyer coming in form. I think it's a bit too late. But I would say good signs for Team India. And even Bumrah's performance today was phenomenal. So, not so good for Mumbai Indians but good for the Indian team for the upcoming tours.
03:03And I think Tim Southy has been phenomenal throughout the season. Pat Cummins getting a game again and has been performing to what his expectations were. So, quite happy with today's performance. But overall, really disappointed with how the season has been so far for KKR.
03:23Naresh, I can't ask you whether you are disappointed. I am sure that the run of disappointment has been there. But at any point of the match, did you think that Mumbai were in the game?
03:35You can say half-fisted. To be honest, this looked as if KKR would get close to 200 the way they started off the first half. If you see both the innings and the best thing happened today, 20 wickets fell.
03:48We took 7 for 41 in the second half and we gave 7 for 30 in the second half. You know, that's how the game has gone. But they played very well in the power play up to the 10th over and then I think after 13th is when they started completely, you know, the Bumrah magic was there.
04:05But restricting them to 165, yes, we can say that we were without Surya. But we could have given a better fight with the bat. And I think losing 2 wickets in the power play and I agree with Satish, Ishaan Kishan himself has cost a big fortune for Mumbai.
04:24And he should have been more responsible. But to answer your question, half-fisted, I had some hopes that because we are coming with 2 wins, we could have made a good game out of this.
04:38Anish, you have been watching Mumbai for a long time. But it's never been so bad. What is going wrong here?
04:48You are right, Shyam. Mumbai has been always slow starters in most of the tournaments, barring the first tournament which in 2020 I think they won comprehensively. But this year, as you say, they have been pathetic to say the least.
05:01And we all discussed that after the auction that they look for a team which might come at the bottom and we are all probably at least put right in this, our conclusion that they might come at the bottom with just probably 2 games to go.
05:16There is no planning, let's be very honest. When you don't have batsmen to replace Surya Kumar Yadav and Bhumrah is not fit, where do they go?
05:27You need one good bowler, one good batsman to take it. Unfortunately, Rohit is not having a good season like how Virat Kohli is not having a good season.
05:36But after what you saw today what Bhumrah bowled, they should have won it for him. This was not an easy wicket but not a difficult wicket too where 160 couldn't have been chased.
05:46You take the game deep and the guys like Pollard and the team Davids could have won the game. They probably were too much in a hurry and it's not that KKR had the best of best bowlers.
05:57They were having 2 bowlers who were coming out of form and were under pressure. Mumbai played pathetic cricket, let's accept it and KKR might just have a consolation win because they have had a bad run against Mumbai.
06:08So, that might give them happy, especially their ownership, Tarun Khan.
06:12Mah, I'll come to you straight away. We saw a completely rejigged KKR today. It's almost the same team they started out with. Pengrish Isra here at the top, so was Rahane, then we have Chakraborty coming in and so was Pat Cummins.
06:29So, did KKR make a mistake in making too many changes in between?
06:35Yes, definitely. I have said this earlier as well. One thing that I have not liked about Brendan Macklem's coaching era is that too many changes.
06:43I think this was the 6th opening pair in the last 7 matches and no one has a proper spot where they are going to play.
06:51If you see Dinesh Karthik in RCB, no matter how he plays, he has given the role of the finisher and he plays there.
06:58When he was at KKR, he played 2-3 good matches and he has promoted up the order. So, that's one thing that I don't like about KKR's management.
07:05There's a lot of changes. Bowling has been way better, but today I think it was the team which was our first playing XI.
07:13Yes, the former Venkatesh Iyer and Varun Chakraborty got them out of the team, but if they were in form, this was I think our first XI that we would be playing with.
07:24Naresh, I am sure you would listen to what Anish said. Because earlier, till last year or even before that, every player in Mumbai had a substitute or a replacement of equal calibre.
07:41You had Trent Boult. When Trent Boult was injured, you had Nathan Cake, Kotal Nail and Lalit Diyar coming in there.
07:49So, man for man, they had strong bench strength, which is no longer the case. So, do you think that they could recover?
07:58I mean, this season is gone. Will they come back strongly next year? Of course, you have got Dirk Vraartse coming. Will that make a difference?
08:06You know, can't say. Because it has been such a long season and the conditions change. If things are normal, we will be playing all over the country in the next year.
08:18So, different pitches. We have seen how Chennai has been for pacers. So, it is not going to be that Jeffra Archer coming in will solve all the problems.
08:27I think the vacuum created of 5-6-7, which was the Pandya brothers and Pollard has not been filled and Pollard has also failed.
08:37So, that middle order where all-rounders play, you can see in Lucknow how well they are doing.
08:42That all-rounders with Huda and Krunal Pandya and Stoinis, we don't have that at all.
08:49That needs a lot of attention. And yes, as Aneesbhai said, Surya's replacement.
08:55At least you need half of the batsmen who can play as good as Surya. We don't have that.
09:02So, that's going to be a big concern. I wouldn't say Ishan is in form. He is still struggling. But at least he got a 50.
09:11So, I think the entire line-up, I would say the entire playing XI would be required to be re-looked at.
09:18Who are those guys who would continue and what needs to be done specially of the people who would be required to finish the games.
09:26And obviously, Bumrah's support. Archer would be more of Bumrah's support.
09:30But again, who is Archer's backup in case Archer is not available for entire season?
09:36Like this year. Okay, I get your drift, Naresh. But Satish, I will put that question to Satish.
09:42Satish, if you were the Mumbai Indians' owner, what would you do differently next season?
09:47Very difficult to do anything different, Shyam. Because you can't change the team midway.
09:53By picking Sams or these guys…
09:57No, I am saying the next season. This season is well and truly done for them.
10:01No, but I think you can't replace that player unless or otherwise they are unfit, isn't it?
10:06In the middle of… Yeah, if they are not willing or some odd change, yes.
10:11I would certainly go for a couple of good foreign players.
10:15These guys are… I don't think anybody would have picked Sams. Yes, he has bowled some good swell in between.
10:23But they are not match-winners, Shyam. Like your David or your Sams.
10:27These guys are not match-winners. And of course, I think probably this will be the last year for Pollard.
10:32I don't think he is going to come back next year and play. Because he has not been among runs at all.
10:38And if you look at, he has not been in the last season. He has not scored for West Indies.
10:43And he has not been scoring this year also. So, I think they were banking too much on Pollard.
10:48They were banking too much on Rohit Sharma. The problem is plenty, Shyam.
10:53Like Naresh said, you have to change the entire team, which is not possible without the option.
10:59What I meant was, within… Okay, you can't completely change the full team.
11:07So, with the available resources, what would you do differently?
11:11I would probably tell them to apply themselves and play better.
11:17Because first and foremost, Rohit Sharma, after seeing Chennai Super Kings beating Delhi Capitals after batting first,
11:26won the toss and again putting Kolkata into bat. What a decision that was.
11:31The wickets were slowing down. At least the first 10 overs, you are able to play better because the new ball and the wicket is fresh.
11:38So, it comes on to the bat nicely. Again, like Pant, he gave a match on a platter.
11:43And after getting a knick, he is clueless now that he is not even knicked.
11:48So, I think they need to reorient themselves mentally than their game.
11:53That is my… I think if I were the owner, I would probably tell them to do that.
11:59Anish, do you think Pollard's days over Satheesh Singh's career is pretty much over? Do you agree there?
12:07Yeah, I believe so. That's why he has hung up his boots for Wasimbi's two.
12:11Well, he has been playing now from the beginning, I guess, from Mumbai Indians.
12:162010. 2010 he came in.
12:182010. So, we are talking about 12 years is a long period for any cricketer.
12:23You never know with West Indian cricketers. They might just come back again with a bang.
12:28But you have to say that his days are numbered.
12:31And his form has really hurt Mumbai Indians along with Rohit Sharma's form, Ishaan Kishan's patchy form.
12:38And bearing Suryakumar Yadav and little bit of Tilak Verma, there is nobody else whom you can talk about in the batting.
12:45And Bumrah, they had kept him quiet for all these matches except this match.
12:49So, no spinner who can win them the match.
12:53Generally, they had somebody or the other who can win them the match.
12:56Other teams, if you watch, everybody has a spinner.
12:59You can't talk about them as a spinning team.
13:01I agree that they did have in the past also so many big spinners.
13:05They had Krunal Pandya and the other guys doing the job.
13:08But they looked handicapped.
13:10Rahul Chahar.
13:11Yeah, Rahul Chahar. How many players you are allowed to retain next year?
13:15But one guy they should probably hold on.
13:17Two guys, I would bank on David and Brevis for the future.
13:21Yeah, that's a good thought there.
13:25Because both of them need little more time.
13:27And Brevis, we have seen a little bit of his…
13:29And he has not been playing, Ishaan. Brevis has not been playing.
13:33That's a wrong call, Satish.
13:35They should have made play Brevis and David from the beginning.
13:38You got to back this talent.
13:40See, these are guys who will win you after five matches, one game.
13:43But you back them to the court.
13:46Like how Viparaj Gaikwad, six matches, nothing to show.
13:49Back to him, back to him, back to him and see today.
13:52But Anisbhai, when Suryakumar Yadav was not there,
13:56they should have brought Brevis at least.
13:58I had that point. Spot on.
14:00I think they wanted to give that newcomer a chance because they know they are out.
14:04That's the reason.
14:05But at the moment, they are just going through the motions of the tournament, I guess.
14:08I think they also want to get over with it.
14:11Because the tournament is pretty much over for them.
14:14So they are just going through the motions.
14:16Okay, Maaz, KKR, fifth win in 12 matches.
14:21Do you still harbor chances of making the knockout?
14:28To be honest, no.
14:29Mathematically, yes, we still have a chance.
14:31But if you see, there is already a team at 14 points with three matches left.
14:34And there are other teams with a better run rate and more matches and more points.
14:39So I don't think and I don't believe in KKR's current lineup and form they have been playing
14:45to win all the next matches with a big margin and come back in the playoff.
14:49So to be honest, this season is done and that's it for KKR.
14:54And Shyam, sorry to interrupt. One minute.
14:56Yesterday, Anisbhai made a very, very valid point.
14:58I think you were right, Anisbhai, saying that whenever Rahane plays, they win.
15:03Rahane is a lucky champ, which happened today.
15:05Today, again, he was playing well.
15:07You know, his role is to bat deep.
15:09Give a single and go on the on-strike.
15:11Why try shots which is not in your cricketing book, the reverse sweep?
15:14It doesn't suit him.
15:17He is like a Kane Williamson for us.
15:19A sheet-hacker.
15:24Naresh, obviously, Mumbai's tournament is well and truly over.
15:29Any final thoughts on their campaign?
15:34No, I mean, the quicker it's over, it's good for them.
15:37Because I think it's very important.
15:39It was one thing good of what Bumrah achieved today.
15:43Because they still have a long season ahead.
15:46I don't think there is any gap.
15:47They are playing non-stop cricket.
15:48Just a 10-day break and there is a South Africa series.
15:51And then they travel to UK.
15:54So, the players like Rohit Sharma and Bumrah especially need to be mentally fresh.
15:59I think they both, because they are seniors in the Mumbai Indian side,
16:03they surely are mentally drained out.
16:05I don't know whether they will take a break for the remaining games.
16:08They should.
16:09It won't happen.
16:10They should but it won't happen.
16:11But I would like to see now others on the bench to play the rest of the games.
16:18And whatever we end up with.
16:20I mean, obviously, we will be ending up at the bottom.
16:23But let's see how we fare in the remaining games.
16:25But try out the remaining bench.
16:27Because next year, we will have to look at what options we can go for.
16:33But we need to start better next year.
16:35So, we need to start looking in those terms.
16:37And that's what Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan's role will be.
16:41If they can save their jobs.
16:44Yeah, it will be a tough ask.
16:47Because, I mean, Mumbai bosses are demanding.
16:51So, they are very, very, very demanding bosses.
16:54So, I think next year, we need to watch and see how they start the campaign
17:01and how they can do.
17:02And how much wiggle room they have in terms of recruitment, we don't know.
17:08So, let's wait and watch before we wind up.
17:11And Israf, let's have it about the competition.
17:14Yeah, Shyam.
17:15Every day, we have a competition where you need to predict the winner.
17:18I know predicting the winner is tough in this IPL.
17:20But when Mumbai plays, you know whom to predict.
17:23Anyways, you can walk away with a beautiful apparel kit and cap
17:29as well as a beautiful subscription.
17:31And that's what you love.
17:33And get it on Garfield's page.
17:37So, which means quite a few people would have won the kit today.
17:41I mean, at least they would have got it right.
17:44Yeah.
17:46That's a cracker of a match coming up, Shyam, tomorrow.
17:49Lucknow versus Gujarat, the top of the table clash.
17:52Yes, Gujarat Titans versus Lucknow Super Giants.
17:57Two newbies and two of them are right at the top of the table.
18:03Mahesh, who will win?
18:05This is our chance to predict.
18:07I think Gujarat will try to come back in form and get the top spot again from Lucknow.
18:14So, I think I'll go with Gujarat.
18:16You go with Gujarat.
18:18And Naresh, what about you?
18:20I'll go with Lucknow.
18:22The way they won the last game here in Puno again.
18:26So, I'm going with Lucknow.
18:28Again, Mumbai.
18:29So, you have to understand that.
18:32No, that was KKR.
18:35KKR.
18:36KKR.
18:37KKR.
18:38Sorry, KKR.
18:39KKR.
18:4075.
18:41Not much of a difference.
18:42Satish, what is your pick?
18:46I will go with Gujarat tomorrow, Shyam.
18:48I think they have been experimenting the last few games.
18:51I think they will play a proper game so that they get that upper hand.
18:55Because this is the top of the table clash and I expect Gujarat to do well.
19:00And especially Hardik Pandya.
19:02I'm sure he will lead from the front.
19:05He has been doing that.
19:08Anish, who is your pick tomorrow?
19:10As much as I'm very fond of Hardik's captainship, I'm not so fond of Rahul.
19:15But he has come good in the last few games in spite of scoring three ducks.
19:19Because, like Naresh mentioned, a valid point.
19:21They are playing in Puno.
19:22The fast bowlers get a better help.
19:25I think the fast bowlers of Lucknow have a slight edge with Mohsin Khan coming in.
19:30I will back Lucknow.
19:31And Gujarat have run out of luck, I believe.
19:34So we have two Gujarat and two Lucknow.
19:38And I think Naresh makes a very valid point about Lucknow's performance in the last match.
19:45And their body language is good.
19:47Their approach is good.
19:48And they look good.
19:49So I would also go with Lucknow.
19:51I want their team to bat first.
19:52This is stupidity to bat second.
19:54Win and bat first.
19:56I think they have to re-look at the toss and the way they take the decisions.
20:01Forget the dew.
20:02Puno doesn't have dew as it is.
20:05Puno has no dew.
20:06So they should just…
20:07It will play even both the innings.
20:09So bat first, put up a big score.
20:11So let's wait and find out what is in store for us tomorrow.
20:15Let the best team win.
20:17And that's it for us from today.
20:20Thank you for tuning in.
20:21And for all new developments and updates, please log on to gulfnews.com and all our channels.
20:26Good night.
