The House of Wisdom (HoW) is Sharjah’s new cultural destination and iconic architectural marvel. It was commissioned in honor of the Sharjah World Book Capital 2019 title by UNESCO and is the living legacy of the promises made then, to continue to promote reading and ease access to knowledge to all members of society and in doing so, become a progressive society.
But, it is more than just a home for books. There’s cafes, working spaces, meetup hubs and even a children’s area. Watch our video to know more.

00:17in Sharjah and I'm about to meet Ali who's going to show us a little bit about this amazing
00:22cultural center.
00:23So Ali, where are we right now?
00:25We are here at the lobby of the House of Wisdom and we have created this amazing exhibition
00:31that we are going to take you around and show you more about it.
00:35The exhibition was created here at the lobby in the House of Wisdom because we wanted people
00:42to know more about it by their own self.
00:44Basically, the House of Wisdom is a self-service building that we are going to explore now.
00:52Alright, so Ali, tell me, where are we right now?
00:57You need to guess that.
00:58I'm guessing it's a library.
00:59It is a library.
01:01It is one of our main components here at the House of Wisdom.
01:05It has more than 105,000 physical books and of course, speaking about being futuristic,
01:14we have the digital library here at the House of Wisdom that has up to 300,000 titles that
01:22everyone could have access and enjoy.
01:27Speaking about being futuristic, here at the House of Wisdom, we have customized this machine,
01:34software and hardware, and it has a reader beneath the table here that you don't need
01:41to approach any staff here at the library.
01:44You can just grab a book, scan it, and then you can leave the building.
01:49And to enhance the user experience, you can just return the book in the book return station
01:56that is around the building and that's it.
01:58You can leave the building.
01:59So we're here at the Espresso Books.
02:02What does that even mean?
02:03Guess what?
02:04Okay.
02:06If you want to find your book here at the library, you can easily have access to the
02:11Espresso Books machine that has up to 6 million titles on its database and you can easily print them.
02:25So where are we now?
02:27So we are here at the heart of the House of Wisdom, the courtyard.
02:32The courtyard makes you feel that you're outside the building, but literally you're
02:36inside the building enjoying this seating area that you can enjoy any book that you
02:42would like to read.
02:43The kids area.
02:44The little reader section.
02:47So throughout the year, we are focusing on the young generation from 3 to 10 years old
02:54to provide them with a great program that will enhance their knowledge and of course
03:01their breathing ability.
03:32So we've just finished our tour of the beautiful House of Wisdom in Sharjah.
03:50We saw the Zen garden, we saw the meeting rooms, and it's just such a gorgeous, quiet
03:55space.
03:56My favorite is the little pod I got to sit in and read a book.
