00:00An analyst has warned that the plan by Sabah Barisan National to contest only 38 seats
00:08and form a coalition with other parties after the state election could backfire.
00:14Bill Cherbala of University Malaysia Sabah said voters might prefer strong and stable
00:19coalitions of parties that do not depend on post-election deals.
00:26He said BN risks losing the trust of voters if it did not demonstrate its full strength
00:31before the election, particularly compared to Kabungan Rakyat Sabah which is seen as
00:37a strong local coalition.
00:40Yesterday, FMT reported that Sabah BN was likely to contest 38 out of 73 state assembly
00:48seats.
00:50A source told FMT that BN aims to secure at least 27 seats and then partner with other
00:56parties to secure a simple majority of 37 seats to form the state government.
01:03Ramzi Atiung, also of UMS, questioned BN's odds, saying local sentiment was not in UMNO's
01:11favour.
01:12However, he said UMNO could gain some extra seats if it effectively addressed the voter
01:18concerns such as frequent water and electricity disruptions.
