00:00Good day. Welcome to the Gulf News Update for Thursday, December the 25th. Here are
00:23the top stories at this hour.
00:25Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has announced that special military courts will be set up
00:29to deal with the scourge of terrorism that has claimed more than 50,000 lives in the
00:34country.
00:35In a televised speech on Wednesday, Sharif said political parties had reached a consensus
00:39on setting up special courts for a period of two years to hear terrorism-related cases.
00:44He also said Madrasas will not be allowed to operate in the country without proper registration.
00:49Emirates will finish this year as the airline with the world's largest wide-body passenger
00:54fleet of 218 aircraft and 14 freighters. The airline said in a statement Wednesday
01:00that it added 27 aircraft, including 13 Airbus A380s and 12 Boeing 777-300ERs, to its fleet
01:07this year.
01:09Oscar-winning film director Roman Polanski has lost his latest bid to dismiss a 1977
01:14sexual assault conviction that spurred him to flee to Europe to avoid sentencing. Last
01:19week, Polanski's legal team made accusations of judicial misconduct in its effort to end
01:24the case. But Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James R. Brandlin threw out the
01:28request, stating that Polanski cited no statute, regulation or rule that grants him the right
01:34to an evidentiary hearing.
01:36Given their first opportunity to watch Sony Pictures' comedy The Interview on Wednesday,
01:41after a massive cyber-attack nearly buried its release, viewers of the film described
01:45it as a chance to show their patriotism as well as love. Sony also released the film,
01:50which stars Seth Rogen and James Franco as agents assigned to kill North Korean leader
01:54Kim Jong-un through online video platforms such as YouTube and Xbox Video. However, a
01:59Wall Street Journal review described watching the film as torture from almost start to finish.
02:05And finally, the weather. Today's high across the UAE will be 24 degrees Celsius, dropping
02:09to 15 degrees at night.
02:11That's all for now. Thanks for watching. We will be back with the newscast on Sunday,
