00:00He's starting to get more shots.
00:02Going a whole quarter almost without a field goal attempt, we lived that.
00:06Yeah, and it started before Butler got here.
00:10You know, Steph took a couple 30-shot games.
00:14But since Butler's arrived, he's gotten that efficiency back.
00:18And how much does that rely on Jimmy Butler? Here's Curry.
00:25It's made sense so far.
00:28We've put together, after the first half in Chicago,
00:34put together six pretty good quarters with intentionality, good effort.
00:41You know, you see the positives of what Jimmy brings on both ends of the floor.
00:46Just a high-IQ guy, a competitor, plays under control all the time.
00:52And, you know, we've put pieces around him with different lines.
00:57Michelle's trying to figure that out.
00:58So it's been good so far.
01:00Excited about building some momentum.
01:04We want to end the road trip right.
01:06We've got an opportunity to do something pretty special,
01:10considering where we've been this season.
01:13All right, that's Steph Curry.
01:16What do you think he's talking about, we have a chance to do something special?
01:22You think he's already thinking tight?
01:23Oh, there's no doubt.
01:24And I think that's why we're seeing a more frisky Steph Curry.
01:27I'll slow down on title, but I think he's got a chance.
01:30And that's all he's been asking for.
01:32This has been a game-changer.
01:33And, Steph, I'm sorry.
01:35I apologize.
01:36I was worried.
01:37I was worried that we were going, you know,
01:39damn near quarter with one field goal attempt.
01:41Stony, like, that was just odd.
01:43And then the towel over the head.
01:45And I felt like, you know,
01:46that was him trying to send some signal like he wasn't happy.
01:50But to your point, he did get active in regard to the field goal attempts
01:54and going on the 30, the bender, the 30-point bender before Jimmy.
01:59And I wonder if that's, they knew he was getting somebody
02:02or when he found out.
02:03But 38, I mean, 38 points against Milwaukee, 32 versus Utah,
02:0834 against Chicago, 37 against the L.A. Lakers.
02:13And he's letting them fly.
02:15And it looks like two or three years ago, Curry,
02:18Stony, it looks like that version of Curry,
02:21like, there's a lot of gas in the tank.
02:24And that's what I'm liking about what the future holds for this stretch run, man.
02:29Yeah, Curry, obviously Jimmy Butler has, you know,
02:34contributed to Steph being more efficient.
02:38Curry, I mean, he didn't shoot well the two games before Butler arrived, obviously.
02:4412 for 31 and 13 for 35.
02:47But the last two games, he's looked pretty good, Steph Curry.
02:51Yeah.
02:52And he's, what was he last?
02:54Six for 16 from three.
02:56All right.
02:57That's a little under 40%, but that's fine.
03:01They won by 14 points.
03:02Now, I do have a question for you about Curry because he talked about
03:05he knows he's averaging in regard to points per game.
03:09You know, this is the lowest in a while.
03:12What would it take in regard to getting, you know,
03:14getting that number fat at this juncture of the season?
03:18Is he going to have to just, like,
03:19is it seven more games of averaging 30 to get it back to 25?
03:23Or how is that?
03:24Because I know in baseball once you get so many at bats, Donnie,
03:27it's kind of like you got to really be Rod Carew at bat 400 to get that thing up.
03:32I'm looking at that like, what's it take?
03:34I don't know.
03:35He's averaging 23-3 right now.
03:37Yeah.
03:38So it's come up about a point in the last four games.
03:40Right.
03:41But he's been letting them go.
03:44I'm wondering why the biggest issue for you on the Golden State Warriors
03:49is what Steph Curry averages per game.
03:51I didn't.
03:52Who said that was my biggest issue?
03:53I was just saying, since we're talking about Steph,
03:56I do want that number.
03:57Why are you smiling?
03:58I want that number fat.
04:00And I'm sure he does, too.
04:02I know.
04:03Like, I think one thing that you'll agree with is you don't mind
04:08if the Warriors don't win as long as Steph's getting 35 a game.
04:11No, never, never.
04:12You know it's better than that.
04:14But I'll tell you this, for the people and the whispers,
04:17and I was there, the bilateral tendinitis is kind of funny.
04:20I hadn't mentioned that in almost a week.
04:22Stony, he's letting me know he's feeling good.
04:24Now, the thumb, I have no idea where that's at,
04:27and I hate he's using it in Sunday's game.
04:29But the bottom line is he's been on a bender and it's come at an insane time,
04:34a perfect time, and Jimmy Butler knows what he is.
04:38And, Stony, I think they're building a formula to where if we're close,
04:42we got a guy that can get to the charity stripe with the best of them,
04:45and I'm starting to wonder, and I'm watching this.
04:48You'll get a kick out of this.
04:50The fact that Jimmy's getting so many trips to the free-throw line,
04:54is Curry going to be the beneficiary of that?
04:56I'm just saying it's not like there's been a game he hasn't gone to the line,
05:00Steph Curry, to the free-throw line.
05:02Last night, nine times.
05:04Yeah, and when him and Curry get to the line, they're going to make them.
05:07So this team's already a better free-throw shooting team now with Jimmy Butler.
05:13This is Steve Kerr talking about the last two games with Jimmy Butler
05:18and how they feel different.
05:20The guys feel really good about these two games,
05:23recognizing that both games were games we might have lost earlier in the season.
05:29I think the fact that Jimmy went to the line 15 times tonight, 13 times the other night,
05:34shows you the power of free-throws and the ability to get your defense set
05:40and settle a game down when it needs settling.
05:43So it's a big change.
05:45We don't go to the line much, but the last two games,
05:48I think up over 30 free-throws each game.
05:51So maybe that's about to change.
05:53All right, that's Steve Kerr.
05:55They may have solved their two biggest problems,
05:57not getting to the foul line and getting to the basket with Jimmy Butler.
06:03I do understand there are going to come some games and some guys,
06:06they got all the skill in the world, Stony,
06:08where you're going to miss Wiggins' on-ball defense on that perimeter.
06:12I do understand that.
06:13But Jimmy Butler is no slouch, and when you get Kaminga back, Stony, he is no turnstile.
06:19I know help D is not his best, but his on-ball defense, I'm not mad at it.
06:24So if he can bring that back, I mean, they just get more energy.
06:27And it's funny, these four games, Stony,
06:29if I asked you Steph Curry's field goal total in those four games, what would you guess?
06:35Fifty?
06:36A hundred and—attempts.
06:38Oh.
06:40A hundred and ten?
06:41A hundred and nineteen.
06:42Oh.
06:43But he's been letting them go, baby.
06:44And that's all that matters.
06:45As long as he gets up.
06:46No, that's a sign that he's feeling good.
06:48You just said nobody takes shot attempts more serious than you.
06:52Yeah.
06:53Yeah, and he's got shot attempts.
06:55That's your most important stat.
06:56I know.
06:57That's fine.
06:59My man's mad.
07:00I'm happy.
07:01I get it.
07:02What's the word?
07:03Stand on business.
07:04What do you know about that?
07:05I don't know anything about it.
07:06That's why I'm asking you.
07:07That's where I get it from.
07:08You say it all the time.
07:09Stay.
07:10Brian Windhorst, what does this trade mean for the Golden State Warriors?
07:16And where does he see them in the state?
07:19Steph goes to the bench at the end of the third,
07:21and Jimmy Butler made a huge impact with his scoring in that period where Steph was out.
07:26And that's really where the rubber meets the road here.
07:28The Warriors have just had periods over the last couple of years
07:31where they've just died on the floor when Steph has been on the bench.
07:34Jimmy is going to fix that.
07:35He has 28 free throws in the last two games.
07:38That's the most we've seen for a Warriors player since Durant in 2018.
07:42He brings that aspect to them.
07:44Curtis basically said he's hoping this team, the way it's constructed,
07:48to get to the sixth seed.
07:49They were out of the top ten just a couple of days ago.
07:52They're in to tenth now.
07:54They're three games behind the sixth seed.
07:56That would be an incredible accomplishment.
07:58And if Jimmy's healthy, I think it's reasonable.
08:00I think they could do it.
08:01All right.
08:02So Steve Kerr said last night that he thinks the Warriors can get up to sixth,
08:06and that's the goal.
08:08And they're three games out of the sixth spot right now.
08:12They've got two more games to go before the all-star break.
08:16And I think most importantly, everybody's favorite,
08:20Wendy, thinks it's reasonable to get to the sixth spot.
08:25Yeah.
08:26It's still there.
08:27What's my old saying, Stony?
08:28Our saying.
08:29The math is still there.
08:30So obviously it's going to take execution and a continuance of good basketball.
08:36But right now I'm like Moody stepped in last night, 34 minutes.
08:41Excuse me, Stony.
08:43Stepped in last night and was balling.
08:45And if this continues and you get help,
08:48I don't want to say we're back to a strength in numbers,
08:50but if you're telling me Kamika's coming off the bench,
08:53you got Potts coming off the bench, Post coming off the bench,
08:57that's what it's going to be, and I'm here for it.
09:00888-957-9570 is the number.
09:05Warrior fans, what is the biggest difference you've seen
09:08with the Golden State Warriors the last two games with Jimmy Butler?
09:11I'm looking at the eye.
09:12I'm asking for eye test things right now, not necessarily the numbers.
09:18But what would you say is the biggest difference in the first two games
09:22with Jimmy Butler that's different from what has happened
09:26until they acquired Jimmy Butler?
09:29How would you answer that?
09:31I would answer that they look more composed as a team.
09:39You know, for all Steph Curry's greatness,
09:43sometimes the game gets a little out of control
09:46and Butler does a great job of settling it down.
09:50He's sure-handed with the ball.
09:52He's given him some stability and some reliability.
09:56It feels like they're already using him in two games
10:00in a different way than they used Wiggins, obviously,
10:03because Butler can handle the ball more.
10:06But Butler's becoming a big focus on this team,
10:09and to me, the biggest difference is it's gone from pretty much 80% Steph Curry
10:15and it's probably going to go to 50-50 with Steph Curry and Jimmy Butler
10:21in terms of the scoring aspect on this team.
10:25I love that, and I'll just follow up with this.
10:28I feel like I can read the mind of defenders
10:31when they're playing the Golden State Warriors,
10:33and I know I keep regurgitating this fact here,
10:37but Stony, they were a one-trick pony, man.
10:40I just felt like everything was from the damn outside.
10:43As they went from three, that's what they were going to do,
10:47and now I feel like opposing defenses are stuck now.
10:51They know they've got to worry about the run.
10:53It's not just the pass, and by run, I mean Jimmy Butler in the post,
10:58playing through him in the post.
11:00Stony, the dude can pass, and you can't ignore it.
11:03I know it's only eight quarters, but damn, you asked for the eye test.
11:08It is immediately seen to me.
11:11Oh boy, other teams got more stuff to worry about
11:14than just a three ball with the Warriors.
11:18You're listening to 95.7 The Game, KGMZ FM at HD1 San Francisco,
11:23always live on the free Odyssey app, Twitch, and YouTube,
11:26powered by First NorCal Credit Union.
11:29This is more Steph Curry on Jimmy Butler and what he's done.
11:35Every possession just doesn't feel as hard.
11:37You still see attention, you still see defenses,
11:40but you have to worry about something else.
11:43We're just putting people in the right spot,
11:45so obviously I'm going to be aggressive,
11:48and earlier in the year that aggression didn't necessarily lead to anything
11:53as consistently as it has these last two games.
11:57The first two I shot 30-something times, so that was a little different.
12:02I was talking about the two games before Jimmy got here
12:06when he took 30 shots a game,
12:09but it seems like the Warriors were looking for help for Steph Curry.
12:13He was asking for help, and through two games,
12:17they got a guy who's absolutely positively helping the Warriors right now.
12:20I love every minute of it, and also too, Stouty,
12:23we can't brush over the fact that Steph Curry said his team,
12:28with him on it, wasn't built to come back,
12:31and I know it was the Bulls, but damn, down 24,
12:34that's what made that victory a little more special to me.
12:37They were supposed to win, I get it,
12:39but showing that you could come back one game in
12:43with Jimmy Butler's first game was beautiful.
12:46Let's go to Jason in Philly.
12:48What's going on, Jason? How you doing, man?
12:51What's up, y'all? Fly birds, let's go.
12:54Hey, hey.
12:56But I wanted to talk and say, ooh, I love you, man,
13:00but there is absolutely no chance in the world that Jimmy is going to start.
13:06Him and J.K. occupy the exact same space on the court,
13:10and one of the things that makes J.K. good in his stint
13:14right before he got injured was he had the ball in his hands a lot.
13:18Well, they got Jimmy playing point forward,
13:21and they got Dre playing point forward.
13:24So, I mean, that really edges J.K. out,
13:27and honestly, I think his chances to be in the closing lineup
13:31is going to diminish as well for spacing and the same reasons.
13:35I think J.K.'s best shot at this juncture in the season
13:40is to really focus on being a P.O.A. defender,
13:43which is something that the team is missing.
13:46With Andrew out, if he can focus on P.O.A.,
13:49running the floor, and transition points,
13:53he would be a great benefit to the team,
13:56him and Paz off that second unit.
13:58But starting is over, and I feel bad for the kid, too,
14:01because now it's really about to affect his money going into next season,
14:05and ultimately, I think he's going to be traded.
14:09But we'll see. But no way he's started, guys.
14:12Yeah, but they'll play together, though.
14:14Obviously, if the non-Curry Minutes start with Jimmy Butler
14:17and Kaminga's coming off the bench,
14:19would you like we still get to be treated to that
14:23to see how they coexist?
14:25Absolutely. I think he'll be the first sub for Jimmy off the bench.
14:29That'll be the rotation that they run,
14:31so he'll spend some time with Steph and Jimmy.
14:34But it'll be limited with Jimmy, I think.
14:37Yeah, thanks a lot, Jason. Appreciate it.
14:40I think Kaminga will be better.
14:42I just think Kaminga, he can certainly play with Jimmy Butler
14:47because Jimmy Butler can pass,
14:49but Jimmy Butler has the ball more than Andrew Wiggins.
14:52So that'll be something to watch.
14:54I think Butler and Kaminga, I think, will be fine together
14:58because Butler knows how to play, and he can pass.
15:02But the ball may not find itself in Kaminga's hands as much as before.
15:09But we'll see that as it develops.
15:12From the 510T in Oakland says,
15:15I think I would sum up the biggest thing I noticed via the eye test
15:19is the pace is a lot better.
15:21This pace seems to fit the players they have on the team.
15:24They played too fast for me,
15:26and that is very tough to do if you don't attack the rim
15:29and don't have shooting.
15:30So slowing down now fits this team.
15:32That's T from Oakland. That's not a bad point at all.
15:34And when you go to the stripe 38 times, Donnie,
15:37that's a lot of the game stopping.
15:39Yeah, don't forget Bob Fitzgerald coming up in the 1 o'clock hour.
15:44Warriors television play-by-play man.
15:47And we'll get his thoughts in the 1 o'clock hour.
15:511 o'clock hour.
15:52You think Curry can keep this up?
15:55I mean, because Donnie, he's on a bender.
15:57Yeah, I mean, he can forget the first two games.
16:04I don't want him scoring 30 like that.
16:06I mean, if he's taking 30…
16:08Going to James Harden, Allen Iverson model.
16:10Yeah, I mean, that's the other thing.
16:13I mean, how many times am I going to say that?
16:16You don't want Curry taking 30 shots a game.
16:19You want him taking 18 to 22.
16:23Because when he's taking…
16:25You just don't want to play that way.
16:27Especially if you're the Warriors.
16:30When Steph can do more than one thing.
16:359-2-5 on the text line.
16:39Last two games, I'm almost expecting them to come down the floor
16:43and get a basket or get to the line.
16:45The last few months, it was either a three-pointer, a bad shot, or a turnover.
16:50I mean, man.
16:515-1-0, biggest difference.
16:53Fewer empty possessions.
16:55Yeah.
16:56Taking care of the Rock.
16:57What did you say, Stani?
16:58What, nine turnovers last night?
17:00Yeah, just nine last night.
17:02More Steph Curry on Jimmy Butler's impact.
17:06We've had it happen to us plenty of times where we can't get to the line
17:10and other teams can, and it just changes the momentum.
17:13Not only is it points, but it's ability to set your defense,
17:19figure some stuff out if there's a run going the other way,
17:22be able to talk some stuff out, instead of taking the time out,
17:25little things like that.
17:27He's taking advantage of the space.
17:29We run a lot of emotional offense.
17:32He gets it, whether it's the end of a play where I get trapped
17:37and he's in the pocket, he's making reads,
17:40taking advantage of smaller defenders.
17:44Just positionally, he's always in the right spot.
17:47There's another element we can get to as well with some of the pick
17:50and roll stuff that we've done and being able to take advantage
17:52of opportunities there.
17:54But, again, he's impacting the game in a different way that we haven't seen.
17:58Steph Curry on Jimmy Butler getting to the free throw line.
18:01Now, what do you give me for this, Stani?
18:04I'm not asking for much, but I told you all that I just kind of feel like
18:08the Warriors offense with Draymond racing up the court like Jesse Owens
18:12to stop and kind of wait for Curry a couple times to get open.
18:17Defensives had caught up with that.
18:19These last two games, I'm seeing that, but I'm not seeing it like
18:23it's not just that.
18:24Butler has the ball.
18:25It's all different for the better.
18:28Well, when Draymond has the ball, he's actually got two people
18:31he can throw it to now instead of one.
18:33So that's going to help.
18:35And the other thing is Jimmy Butler can play make,
18:40so Draymond doesn't have to do it as much.
18:43You can cut his initiating of the offense in half maybe
18:47and let Jimmy Butler do it.
18:49And I don't know if you've caught this, but Curry's real giddy
18:52after he's been making shots and they go in, Stani,
18:55but it's almost like the offense is rolling so much now.
19:00You know it's back to old school.
19:02You know it's coming.
19:03You know he's coming, and he still gets it off.
19:07I think we're back, and that's why I keep bringing up the Durant thing
19:10towards Jimmy, just him being out there,
19:13the gravity that the defense has got to respect him with,
19:16and now it just feels like Steph's playing if they're playing easier basketball.
19:20But you can't tell me, Steph, that he's not feeling it,
19:23and that's why he's able to do what he's doing, I believe.
19:27Let's go to Julie.
19:28Julie's in Concord.
19:30Hey, Julie, how you doing?
19:32I'm doing good, guys.
19:33How are you today?
19:34Doing well.
19:37So I just wanted to say, you know, looking at the eyes,
19:40you look at Curry's eyes now and he's got that I'm in a good, happy place
19:47and we're doing well.
19:49And, you know, that in itself he puts off an aura of, you know,
19:54you guys need to do this, everybody's going to have fun,
19:57but we're going to win a game too.
19:59And he's not, you know, he's not killing himself out there anymore,
20:04he's not trying to make everybody win and be a better player.
20:08He's actually enjoying it and it's contagious.
20:13That's what it looks like to me, Julie.
20:15Yeah, me too, Jay.
20:16And you're very similar to my partner.
20:20You both seem to have a gift of being able to look into a player's eyes
20:25and tell everybody exactly what that player is thinking
20:29and how he's approaching it.
20:31You with Wiggins and Julie with Steph Curry.
20:34I almost lost my license with Wiggins on that one,
20:37but I'll tell you this, Donnie, he just feels rejuvenated, man.
20:40He really does.
20:41And it's not hard to kind of figure out why.
20:45And now he's looking like a kid at the park just letting him fly,
20:48how he used to play.
20:50I think this is a real good point from the text line.
20:53Give it to me.
20:54From the 5-1-0.
20:55I think players are able to play more to their strengths
20:58because they don't have to try to be Steph's second scoring option.
21:02I actually think that's very on the money.
21:07It's more natural now?
21:09Well, yeah, this team didn't have a number two scorer.
21:11It was Wiggins sometimes.
21:12It was Kaminga sometimes.
21:14I think it was Buddy Heald here and there.
21:17And you know what?
21:19The whole narrative around Steph needing help.
21:26I've always thought, what if you're a player on the team
21:29and you hear that for half a season?
21:32Steph doesn't have a bona fide number two.
21:34Steph needs help.
21:36The guys around Steph aren't good enough.
21:38It may mean that those players try to do too much
21:44or they're trying to score to be the guy to help Steph Curry.
21:50And now they don't really have to worry about that
21:52because you figure Jimmy Butler's going to be that guy.
21:55And this is no shade to Wiggins, Donnie.
21:57He had all the gifts to be able to be that person,
22:00but mentally his imprint on the game is consistent enough.
22:06So that's what was frustrating about Wiggins, and he balled out.
22:10But the bottom line, Donnie, is Jimmy Butler,
22:12you know what you're getting all 48 minutes of every game, I believe.
22:17The bottom line is if you put the ball in Jimmy Butler's hands,
22:20you're probably going to get a good shot.
22:23But you can't play that way with Andrew Wiggins.
22:26You can't just give him the ball and he's going to generate a good shot.
22:31He might generate a shot for himself,
22:34but he didn't create a lot for others,
22:37and that's the one thing I think that you can count on from Jimmy Butler.
