00:00Good day, welcome to a special Gulf News update for Tuesday, July the 2nd.
00:10The UAE State Security Court, hearing the case of 94 Emiratis charged with plotting
00:14to overthrow the government, has sentenced the key accused to 10 years in jail.
00:18Eight of those tried in absentia have been sentenced to 15 years in jail.
00:22Twenty-six of the accused have been acquitted.
00:25The court handed out the verdicts in four groups.
00:28The first group was declared not guilty, the second received 15 years, the third group
00:32was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment while the fourth received between 3 and 7 years
00:37in jail.
00:38All the female accused were acquitted.
00:40Of the 81 male defendants, 10 were tried in absentia.
00:44The accused also included 13 female suspects.
00:47The court presided by Judge Falah al-Hajri based its decision on Articles 155, 160, 169,
00:54170, 171, 180, 182 of the Penal Code, among other clauses.
01:00During the hearings, the public prosecution had called on the court to apply the maximum
01:05sentence of 15 years against accused belonging to the now disbanded Al-Islah Society, believed
01:11to be affiliated with the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood group.
01:14Lawyers for the accused had no comments for the media soon after the verdict was handed
01:19down.
01:20Since March, the State Security Court has been hearing both sides of the trial from
01:24prosecutors and the defense team who have been involved in the trial.
01:28The prosecution had argued that one of the main goals of the organization was to infiltrate
01:33the country's educational and social institutions.
01:36On the eve of the verdict, Dr. Hadi Fidahiri, Minister of Justice, told Gulf News that the
01:41UAE's justice system ensures that defendants are guaranteed fair trial without any interference
01:48by other authorities, respect of their human rights and the right to be presumed innocent
01:53until proved guilty.
01:54Finally, the weather in today's high across the UAE will be 48 degrees Celsius, dropping
01:59to 28 at night.
