The spirit of Carnival in Bolivia bears the name of a vegetable.

But far from it being a fancy dress, Pepino or cucumber represents the beginning of the festive season that, in La Paz, awakened on Sunday,(Feb 9).

00:18The unearthing or the awakening of the pepino is an annual ritual that starts with Bolivians
00:24going to the General Cemetery of La Paz to pick up the spirit of the carnival who's been
00:29sleeping inside a casket for a year and parade it through the streets.
00:34The pepino is traditionally joined by other important characters of the Bolivian Carnival,
00:39which are the Cholita indigenous women and Chuta men dancers.
00:44According to the tradition, the spirit of carnival awakens to the kiss of a beautiful
00:48woman, who this year was the queen of the Santa Cruz Carnival 2025, Ariane Tirico.
