00:00I mean, who wins five Grammys off just of one song?
00:02One song.
00:03I mean, that is a pretty crazy moment.
00:05He said that this is the last project under the name The Weeknd, but people are never
00:09gonna stop calling him The Weeknd, so I don't know how that's gonna work out for him, but
00:13best wishes.
00:14I think it's our first time, kind of a unique setup on this show for the first time.
00:20I've never had the pleasure of doing it with the esteemed Regina Cho.
00:24If y'all remember, she really was one of the ones killing it, y'all both were, on the discussion
00:28last year about the hottest female rappers of 2024.
00:32She is back with us in 2025.
00:33Miss Regina, how you feeling?
00:35Oh my gosh, I'm so excited to pod with you.
00:37I feel like we haven't had an in-depth conversation in a really long time.
00:40I'm so honored to be back here and basically be the designated sixth man of the pod now.
00:45I really hold that to a high regard.
00:47Thank you guys for tapping me in for this episode, and I'm really excited to get back
00:50into it.
00:51That is a title we do not give out lightly.
00:53He's like, we didn't even give you that title.
00:56But you know what?
00:57Name it, claim it.
00:58Let's get into some of the things around here.
00:59Kyle, of course, how you feeling today, man?
01:01I'm feeling great.
01:02You know, victory feels very, very sweet.
01:04Victory feels very, very sweet.
01:06Very, very sweet.
01:07Okay, well we will get to specifically what that sweet part is in just a moment, of course.
01:13First thing we're going to do is talk about Music's Big Tonight, last Sunday, Grammy Awards,
01:1767th annual showdown.
01:19I think generally a lot of people seem to have a very positive reception to the show,
01:23I think.
01:24That was excellent.
01:25So we'll go through some of the winners, some of the big highlights in a moment.
01:29But first, we're actually going to start, sort of run the tape back to something that
01:34really had the internet shaking that you did not see on the show.
01:38It was a red carpet incident, and pretty much red carpet went flawless except for this one
01:42thing.
01:43And it wasn't Bianca's dress.
01:46It was not Bianca's.
01:47You know, I literally was just thinking, on a night where that all went down, that wasn't
01:54even the most, we kind of just all, you know, been there, done that, you know, okay.
02:00But no, it was not Bianca's dress.
02:02What really had people in a tizzy was an Associated Press interview that was conducted with the
02:08legend, the icon, Babyface, right there on the Grammy's red carpet.
02:12Two AP reporters were speaking with him.
02:15One of the reporters noticed that Chalpa Roan was behind, it maybe seemed like she was possibly
02:20going to miss the opportunity and be past AP on the carpet.
02:23So, you know, however innocently the reporter went out there, called for Chalpa, Babyface
02:30kind of noticed the situation, and he said, y'all got it.
02:34Go do that.
02:35Go do that.
02:36Go do that.
02:37My bad.
02:38I misquoted Babyface.
02:39Go do that.
02:40Handed the mic back, and social media was in an uproar that Babyface got snubbed, really,
02:46for that moment.
02:47Look, we've all been on the frenzy of it.
02:50We do want to mention that she apologized afterwards at the end of the carpet.
02:53She made a point to say, you know, the red carpet's a frenzy, it's kind of this crazy
02:57back and forth.
02:58Caught up in the moment, with no disrespect, said she was a big Babyface fan.
03:02Allegedly.
03:03You know, I'm not going, I don't want to do an Apple Music Library check on nobody.
03:10I'll take her at her word, but did apologize, but people were not satisfied with that.
03:15Yeah, the backlash was so crazy that they had to apologize, like, immediately, not even
03:19after the show, the day after, they had to fix it ASAP.
03:22That's how bad the backlash was.
03:23And the Associated Press, like, tweeted out an apology on their own account, as well as
03:26this reporter.
03:28This went crazy, okay.
03:31To her point about red carpets being crazy, and a frenzy, and you know, this and that,
03:35and of course, Chappell's one of the biggest nominated stars of that night.
03:38Are we being too hard on the reporter for what seems like a pretty, you know, innocent
03:43kind of flub in the moment?
03:45It's not like she did it with ill intent, like she didn't like Babyface and does not
03:48respect, like, I get that.
03:50And you know, as a journalist myself, I don't want her career to, and I don't want her to
03:56go broke, like, I don't want to, you know, everyone's bringing her down, everyone's spamming
04:00her comments, all that.
04:01I don't think that's the solution.
04:02But I do think the backlash was well-deserved, because I don't know, there's just, I understand
04:08the hecticness of the red carpet.
04:11I know things happen in a split second, but there was just like so many other ways you
04:16could have navigated that.
04:19And again, I know she didn't mean it, but this is a very big learning moment for her.
04:23For sure.
04:24Huge, because people are calling for her to be fired.
04:26She did have to deactivate her ex account over the weekend.
04:30Yeah, if you go look, because of course, people are tagging her, and they, you know, she has
04:33a profile as a journalist, and you go and it's, you know, can't be found now.
04:37So she's had to go into social media hiding.
04:40So Kyle, are we, is it, like, maybe knowing that?
04:43Kyle looks like he's not about to give anybody grace.
04:46I guess, like, I, part of me feels that more discussion should also be given to the producer
04:55that was working with her in that clip.
04:56You can see her get tapped on the shoulder to then nudge and, like, get Chapel.
05:00So it seems like Chapel was probably like a priority interview for AP at the time, and
05:04they needed that.
05:05So I don't want to put the onus on her to be like, she was the only one.
05:09It seemed like it was a team effort to kind of get Chapel and get out of the babyface
05:14conversation.
05:15But even then, I think it really speaks to a bigger issue of the kinds of journalists
05:19that we have on these carpets, because I'm not wholly convinced that a Black journalist
05:24would have treated him the same way.
05:25I'm not wholly convinced that a journalist who has a bit more of an intimate relationship
05:31with R&B would have treated him the same way on that carpet.
05:35I'm not sure that if it wasn't Babyface, it would have been a white legend or someone
05:39like that, that they would have been treated that way, because to shut down an interview
05:42mid-conversation is nuts.
05:45I've been on these carpets.
05:46I know how hectic it is.
05:48I don't think I've ever, ever had the urge to shut down an interview mid-conversation.
05:54Like, yelling is crazy.
05:58While he's speaking.
05:59Like, yelling past him, like, there was a level of, there was a lack of tact there that
06:05I don't even think is, like, indicative of, like, her journalistic skills.
06:09It was more just, like, manners, like, let's not do that.
06:13Just have a baseline level of respect for everybody on the carpet, whether or not you
06:17yourself are a massive fan, whether or not they're a priority get for your publication.
06:21They're on the carpet.
06:22And at the time of the interview, only Babyface was a Grammy winner in that situation.
06:26Chabla hadn't even won her Grammy yet.
06:28Like, that is nuts on the carpet to go about it in that way.
06:34It made me really, really sad.
06:36It made me really, really sad, because I also do think that, I think about all the black
06:40publications and black press members who don't even get opportunities to go to these
06:43kinds of events or to have a presence there who would kill to have 30 seconds with Babyface.
06:49And you get time and you essentially brush him off for why.
06:54And you're going to get Chabla, you're AP News.
06:57Come on.
06:58And he's like one of, when you really think about it, one of the only living legends left
07:04of his caliber.
07:06The stories that he holds, like, the things that he has witnessed, the things that he
07:09has influenced.
07:10It's so crazy.
07:11It's almost as if they didn't appreciate what they had right in front of them.
07:16I don't know.
07:17I know he needs no introduction.
07:18He's one of the most influential people in music, but even if, I know you were just saying
07:22this too, Kyle, but even if it wasn't Babyface, I know this blew up because of the magnitude
07:26of his stardom, but even if it wasn't Babyface, let's say it was like some no-name artist
07:31that was just walking and you were just talking to them, you still don't do that in the middle
07:34of an interview.
07:35Big destiny.
07:36That's why when you said Manor is like a light bulb, I was like, yeah, it's just basically
07:40about Manor's, and I know she apologized, and again, I don't want her to get so insanely
07:45crucified to where it derails her entire career.
07:47People learn, but oh my gosh, re-watching that video back was really heartbreaking because
07:52you could tell he's just like, oh, okay, damn.
07:54So that was really the big commotion on the pre-show.
07:56Let's jump into the actual show itself.
07:58Boy, oh boy, oh boy, winner's list is, you know, it's heavy, it's a heavy, heavy set.
08:06Let's start, of course, with what the big headline was for a lot of people.
08:09Last award of the night, first-time winner, it almost feels weird to even say this sentence.
08:17Beyonce has a Grammy award for album of the year.
08:21Woo!
08:22We win this history!
08:24Long ass time coming.
08:26What?
08:27Which makes no sense because she's, prior to this recent show, she had the most, like
08:32she had the most Grammys of all time, right?
08:36Yeah, yeah.
08:3732 walking into the ceremony.
08:39For her to have the most Grammys of all time, but to never have album of the year, like
08:43how does that even mathematically make sense?
08:45I don't know.
08:46It was crazy, but she finally got it.
08:48Well, it has not made sense to a lot of people for a long time.
08:51Certainly, that, of course, is the big discussion that's been, you know, sort of surrounding
08:56any Beyonce release in the past, you know, three, four, five, six years.
08:59As soon as it comes out, is it going to be the one?
09:01Is it going to be the one?
09:03And, you know, I guess the pressure is finally off, obviously.
09:06She seemed very shocked herself to win.
09:09You saw the acceptance speech she referenced that it had been, you know.
09:12Many, many years.
09:13Many, many years.
09:14So, you know, we've seen sort of hints, and even on this album, Cowboy Carter itself,
09:18she mentions, you know.
09:19A.L.T.Y.
09:20I ain't win.
09:21Yeah, it gives a little nod to that.
09:22I have a question.
09:23Do you guys think she was, you know the infamous meme when she won, when Cowboy Carter won
09:29for country album, and then when she was like shocked?
09:32Do you think she was like genuinely surprised or no?
09:33Oh, hell yeah.
09:34Oh, really?
09:35Because I thought so too, but people were like, oh, she has such good acting skills.
09:38Go ahead, girl.
09:39That I would even say, because I was like, y'all don't like Beyonce's acting skills.
09:43Yeah, so why are you saying she's like, yeah.
09:45But I think she was genuinely surprised.
09:47I mean, one, because, you know, you're literally making history in that moment.
09:50Like, first black woman to win best country album, no one has ever done that before.
09:55But also, it wasn't necessarily a shoo-in.
09:57This was met with a lot of pushback from different members of the community, and she didn't sweep
10:03the country category.
10:04She only won country duo group.
10:05She lost country solo performance.
10:07She lost country song.
10:08It wasn't really a given who was going to win.
10:10It could have been Chris.
10:11It could have been KC.
10:12They could have named any of those names, really, and it would have made sense.
10:15So I think when they finally did a readout Cowboy Carter to name her best country album,
10:19she was genuinely shocked.
10:21I think she was also as shocked when she won album of the year, because we normally get
10:26a well-put-together speech from Beyonce, but it was pretty short and sweet with this one.
10:30It was almost like she was genuinely in a state of, like, oh, holy shit.
10:33Oh, I wasn't expecting that.
10:34It's me.
10:35Like, you said my name and my album title.
10:38But it was such a beautiful moment, you know, as a long-time fan, a lifelong fan of B, but
10:44also someone who has really been just utterly confused as to how she has not won this award
10:50yet.
10:51I think it was a combination of the strength of the record, obviously the converging narratives
10:55that she had going into this race, also the specific album she was up against.
10:58I think some vote splits definitely helped in her favor when it came down to the final
11:04vote tallies.
11:05But it's beautiful that she finally has this.
11:08I still think it's insane that this is only her second general field Grammy ever.
11:12Like you were saying before, 35 wins now, and you've only won in the general field twice.
11:17Single ladies song of the year, and now a Cowboy Carter album of the year.
11:20Never even won record of the year, and it's just like, holy shit.
11:24What record you giving Beyonce record of the year?
11:26Crazy In Love.
11:27Everything.
11:28Crazy In Love.
11:29That was the first time I ever learned about who Coldplay was, because Coldplay won record
11:35of the year back way back when, and I was like, oh, what is Coldplay?
11:39Who is Coldplay?
11:40Shout out Coldplay, record of the year winners.
11:43I don't know.
11:45I've been speaking with people about this, and they were like, oh, did you enjoy the
11:49show?
11:50And they were like, yeah, you know, we love that Beyonce won, but they felt, this is them,
11:53this is not me.
11:54I enjoyed it.
11:55I enjoyed her win.
11:56They felt like they couldn't fully enjoy it because it felt like a here, damn moment.
11:59Like, here's your award.
12:00And so I want to ask you guys, what do you guys think?
12:04Do you guys think Jay-Z's speech the year prior had a lot to do with this or no?
12:08Because me personally, I feel like, you know, I don't know if Jay-Z's speech had that much
12:14of an impact, and they did it just because of him.
12:18Because they've played in his face before, so it's not like his words are what made them
12:22do this.
12:24But a lot of people are saying otherwise.
12:26They're saying, like, oh, they don't want to piss off Jay-Z again.
12:28What do you guys think?
12:29I think that's a bunch of bullshit, to be completely honest.
12:32I think, honestly, the reverse would have happened.
12:35I expected the reverse to happen, that they would shut her out because he did that.
12:40Like, we give you the special award, you know, the global impact award, and you spend your
12:44speech basically lambasting us.
12:46I'm expecting, like, 0 for 11 next year.
12:50I'm not expecting I'm of the year at all.
12:52I think it really was, she was able to pull from a lot of different voter bases that she
12:56did not have access to before.
12:58On her previous runs, she was not going to get a single country voter.
13:02Like now, she has at least some of those voters in her back pocket, and she was the only country
13:07Jay-Z's album nominated that year.
13:09That's who that block is going to rally around.
13:11Then you have the pop vote.
13:12I don't know if it's even-
13:13Then you have the pop-
13:14But I don't-
13:15I'm not done yet!
13:16Okay!
13:17Then you got the pop vote being split like five different ways.
13:19That's going to really hurt all those people who are competing in the pop categories together.
13:24Jacob and Andre are not John Batiste.
13:27They're not going to, you know, sweep their genre categories and then take home the big
13:31ones.
13:32That did not happen this year.
13:33Shout out to John.
13:34So it all makes sense this year.
13:35I do think that it would be a lie to be like, there was no impact of the narrative of her
13:40always losing the award.
13:42Like that definitely played a part of people being like, damn, we want to see her win this
13:45one.
13:46I told this in my op-ed, you know, the day after the Grammys came out, that even if that
13:50was an element of the win, which is an element of many wins across these major award shows,
13:54I think of-
13:55Yeah.
13:56There's a lot of context.
13:57Leo winning for The Revenant or Scorsese winning for The Departed where it was like, damn,
14:00you should have gotten this a while ago.
14:01But this is also good work, which I think is what I really want to stress is that Cowboy
14:06Carter itself is still a worthy fucking project of Album of the Year.
14:10It was the best and most brilliant album in that category.
14:14And it deserved the win, whether or not it was her first Album of the Year nomination,
14:17her sixth one, her 50th one.
14:19It's a strong ass body of work and it's innovative, it's ambitious, and it's good.
14:25And I really want that to be the main takeaway, but that's hard to do when your husband gave
14:29a speech like that last year.
14:30Which is why I was so pissed when he gave that speech because I knew that no matter
14:34what project she put out, it would always cloud it because that's what we do in our
14:39society.
14:40Like we're going to hold Jay-Z's words over her win because we don't want to give her
14:43the full credit of her win.
14:45It's an easy way to just obfuscate that and it's annoying.
14:48But I really implore people, just go spend the record.
14:52You will understand why she won by the end of the first song, promise you.
14:56And it changed so many lives.
14:57But I just want to give a quick shout out, oh my gosh, shout out to our guy Shaboozie.
15:00He should have left with something.
15:01Should have left with something.
15:02Should have left with something, but hey.
15:05Country solo was yours, bro.
15:06So many contenders, what are you going to do?
15:08This happens every year at the Grammys, you can't always get everything that you want
15:12because there's so many worthy contenders.
15:14Also shout out to Billie Eilish.
15:15She didn't leave with any awards, right?
15:16No, she went home empty handed also.
15:17Yeah, Billie Taylor.
15:18I love that record.
15:19I know.
15:20Chaperone only winning one.
15:21There were a lot of people who felt like-
15:22It was very spread of the wealth this year.
15:23There was some people missing.
15:24You cannot leave with everything you want.
15:25But somebody did.
15:26Unless.
15:27Unless.
15:28You are Kendrick Lamar.
15:29Come on.
15:30In which case, you left with everything and more Kendrick Lamar.
15:31Biggest winner of the night.
15:32Five, four, three, two, one.
15:33You are Kendrick Lamar.
15:34You are Kendrick Lamar.
15:35You are Kendrick Lamar.
15:36You are Kendrick Lamar.
15:37In which case, you left with everything and more Kendrick Lamar.
15:40Biggest winner of the night.
15:41Five.
15:42Count them.
15:43Five new Grammys for him.
15:44That's best rap song, rap performance, which most people expected.
15:48Best music video, song of the year, and record of the year.
15:53That is a clean sweep.
15:54Five for five.
15:55No album.
15:56No album needed.
15:57I mean, who wins five Grammys off just of one song?
15:59One song.
16:00I mean, that is a pretty crazy ass moment.
16:03Speaking of crazy ass moments, that record of the year win, I believe, was the first
16:07one Miley Cyrus presented it, so that was the first time we saw Kendrick on stage that
16:10night.
16:11Boy.
16:12I mean.
16:13They played the song.
16:14You know, because we have seen Not Like Us in several pockets.
16:18Of course, the athletes have adopted it.
16:20Of course.
16:21You know, you've seen individuals talk about it and praise it, but we really never saw
16:24the music community as a recording academy group, as, you know, the peers and the esteemed
16:30and the label executives and the, you know, publicists and the managers and the people
16:34up top.
16:35This crew.
16:36Yeah, the C-suites.
16:37Say it out there, word for word.
16:40Biggest smiles on their faces.
16:43You got Beyonce with a little church clap.
16:44I mean, Beyonce.
16:45You got Blue rapping in the corner.
16:46Taylor busting it down in the back.
16:47Oh my gosh.
16:48Shout out to Taylor.
16:49Listen.
16:50Everybody.
16:51Wait, hold on.
16:52Just a quick little thing we have to throw in here while we mention Taylor.
16:55Like, did you guys see when Janelle Monáe threw her jacket and Taylor caught it?
16:58She was like.
16:59No, Taylor Swift was having the time of her life.
17:01Love Taylor.
17:02I love her at award shows.
17:03Love her at award shows.
17:04Yeah.
17:05But what stood out to me was, you know, Record of the Year, you said, when he came out to
17:10accept that award.
17:11But what was funny to me was the difference between Record of the Year and Song of the
17:14Year.
17:15Record of the Year is more about the overall, you know, the beat, the production, the performance,
17:19the composition, all that stuff.
17:21So it makes sense to me why not like us won Record of the Year, but what got me was, no,
17:26he won that.
17:27That was enough.
17:29He won Song of the Year, which is about the songwriting.
17:31So the voters were like, oh, I like the words too.
17:33So I don't know.
17:34I was like, damn, that is so crazy, the impact that this song had.
17:38I know it's the biggest song of the year, but I genuinely didn't expect him to sweep.
17:42I expected him to win maybe like one or two, especially in the rap categories themselves.
17:48But to have both of them, oh my God, were you guys expecting it?
17:51Well, let me give a shout out to somebody who apparently was expecting it.
17:55This is the part where, you know, we got to pull our man off of IR, Illness Reserve,
18:00Karl Lamar, because Karl was out there tweeting and talking about it.
18:03And we were chatting on Sunday, mentioning that he said on this very show last week,
18:08we did the Grammy preview that he said Kendrick was going to win five awards.
18:13Oh my God.
18:14He did say that.
18:15He did say that.
18:16Take a look.
18:17Shout out to Mr. Kendrick Lamar.
18:18Seven nominations.
18:19I think the bros are going to take home five.
18:21Shout out to Karl Lamar on Illness Reserve this week.
18:24Now, obviously, Not Like Us was always going to be a big historic thing.
18:27We already saw what its impact was on the charts.
18:29We saw the culture that took over.
18:31But now with this extra level that, as was emphasized so many times during the show,
18:35that the over 13,000 members of the...
18:38They were trying to say, don't come for us.
18:40It wasn't a back room.
18:41It wasn't Conclave.
18:42It wasn't four or five people, 13,000 people eligible to vote for this.
18:46And they decided that Not Like Us was their record and song of the year.
18:50Now, what does that do to the legacy of the song now?
18:53How much further does it really just enshrine itself among everybody?
18:57I mean, it just really emphasizes that it's in a class of its own.
19:00There is no other song that has this specific combination of elements.
19:06It's critically acclaimed.
19:07We love it.
19:08It's commercially successful.
19:10Five Grammys.
19:11But it also is a fucking KO punch in a diss battle.
19:15This is crazy.
19:16This has never happened before.
19:18Not at this level.
19:20I can't think of any other comparison.
19:21I think that this sweep was awesome to watch.
19:25I mean, Kendrick, whenever he's nominated at the Grammys, is pretty much a pseudo-sweep
19:29waiting to happen.
19:30But this one was still like, whoa, your first general feel Grammys.
19:34This is kind of crazy.
19:35It's Not Like Us.
19:36But also, and I've been saying this for the past couple episodes, eternally grateful to
19:41Not Like Us for now not having This Is America as the only hip hop song to win record or
19:48song of the year.
19:49I am so grateful.
19:50Because it's a shitty-ass fucking song, and Not Like Us is so much better.
19:54So thank you, Kendrick.
19:55This is America.
19:56I don't know.
19:57When I looked at Kendrick, there's a lot going on.
20:00The impact.
20:03He's coming off a rap beef win.
20:05He swept at the Grammys, and now he is going to have a headlining performance at the Super
20:10Bowl.
20:11So there's just a lot going on with him.
20:12I don't think we've ever witnessed anything like this.
20:14And the award was presented to him by Diana Ross.
20:16He was wearing a freaking Canadian tuxedo.
20:19The Canadian tux.
20:20Yeah.
20:21Didn't even touch that.
20:22That's crazy.
20:23But I don't know.
20:24Watching him, this is just me assuming maybe he's good at hiding things.
20:26But when he went up there to accept his awards, he looked so relaxed and happy.
20:31Calm, right?
20:32He looked very...
20:33He was glowing.
20:34He just looked so...
20:35He's like, what's up with it?
20:37He was just so smooth.
20:38It didn't even seem like this phased him.
20:41He seems to be in a good mind state, and that is very, very scary leading up to the Super
20:47Bowl, because he's just going to go insane.
20:49Oh my God.
20:50When you feel like you're on top of the world, oh my God, I don't even know what he has in
20:53store.
20:54Five grams, Jesus.
20:55But that's crazy.
20:56Yeah.
20:57We'll definitely see what K.Dot has planned.
21:00And of course, people, given the emphasis now, they still wonder, is it not like us?
21:05It only builds anticipation more for, is that song going to make an appearance?
21:08Somehow is it going to be, obviously, in an instrumental kind of vibe?
21:11Is he going to do the whole thing?
21:12But coming off record of the year win, that is going to be a statement to perform the
21:18record of the year just a few days later on the biggest audience in television.
21:23Other rap categories we want to get to, of course, huge win for Dochi, taking home best
21:28rap album for Alligator Bites, Never Heal.
21:31Starting off the show, strong Cardi B presenting the award, the last woman to win that award
21:37back for Invasion of Privacy.
21:40Thoughts on Dochi's win?
21:41We called that last week when we were, we were all sort of in agreement that it felt
21:44like Dochi was the front runner for that category.
21:47Once again, you know, a filter gets it right.
21:50You know, the Dochi win made me feel like how Victoria's wins made me feel last year,
21:54made me feel how Megan's wins made me feel in 2020.
21:57Like people who have been working their asses off for such a long time, who have been told
22:02no expressly and publicly for such a long time that their sound or their vision was
22:07not going to work, that people weren't going to get it.
22:11And to see that embrace, see their peers embrace them and see her shut down the stage
22:15like she did and really prove why she had the best rap album in that category.
22:19Like that was one of those beautiful priceless Grammy moments.
22:22And I'm so happy that a dark skinned woman got to have that on the national stage.
22:27Like that is something that I don't get to see often.
22:30And I hope I get to see a lot more of after Dochi shut it down.
22:33Regina, I don't know about you, but I thought Dochi really, I mean, from the jump, the first
22:39award speech of the night, probably the best speech of the night.
22:42Yeah.
22:43Yes.
22:44It literally left an impact.
22:45That's a speech that you're going to remember where you were when you heard that.
22:48When she was like, if you look like me, if you, I'm telling you that you can do it.
22:51And that I know that hits home for so many people.
22:54And this award is so impactful because it really reminds you that, you know, say, I
22:59know, I know we're on billboard, on filter right now, but you know, sales aren't everything.
23:04I believe.
23:05No.
23:06Okay.
23:07But we literally have an example right now where, you know, she sold, I believe the debut
23:14at 11K, her debut week.
23:16And that's not, that's not massive for a rap album.
23:19And she still won best rap album at the Grammys.
23:22And I love that it really highlighted her journey because when she won, I was on Twitter,
23:28of course, but people kept resurfacing the screenshot of her YouTube channel of her being
23:32like, God, like five years ago, she was like, there's a paper trail of how amazing her journey
23:36has been.
23:37And I was like, guys, I got fired from my job today.
23:40She's just vlogging.
23:41And she's like, well, honestly, thank God, because now I'm going to really pursue this
23:44rap thing.
23:45And look at her now.
23:46I just love a full circle moment.
23:47And I love that you brought up Victoria Monet, because I fully agree when she won best new
23:51artist last year, I will never forget that moment.
23:54They deserve it.
23:55They've been grinding for so long.
23:56And that was one of the best moments of the night for sure.
23:58And what a night she had with a stellar performance.
24:01Just amazing.
24:02Couldn't have gone better.
24:03Yeah.
24:04Shout out to Dochi.
24:05We'll get to the performance in a second.
24:07Also want to give a shout out to Rapsody.
24:08Yeah.
24:09In the rap category.
24:10First Grammy.
24:11Yep.
24:12Someone who's been on that same circuit hustling and grinding for a while.
24:15Very glad to see her get the win for best rap duo group performance with Erykah Badu.
24:20So shout out to Badu up there as well.
24:22So yeah, I mean, really, I think a full slate of rap winners that a lot of people will be
24:26very, very happy with.
24:27Shout out in the RB category, Chris Brown, winning his second Grammy award of his entire
24:31career.
24:32That's crazy.
24:33Also in best RB album.
24:34Also got unfiltered prediction as well.
24:36Yes.
24:37Shout out to Damien.
24:38Yeah.
24:39Yeah.
24:40He called that one for best R&B album for 11.11 Deluxe.
24:41Also Money Long, best R&B performance for Made For Me.
24:45Shout out Soul Train.
24:46Live from BET.
24:47You know, come on, live version right there.
24:49And Money actually showing up on the pre-show to perform this song right before she won.
24:53So you know, a lot of artists who are nominated for those big awards really wouldn't do that.
24:58Yeah.
24:59So the fact that, you know, I think she really goes to show that she's, there was no saying
25:01that she, Casey was at the pre-show.
25:03I really liked that.
25:04Anyone who had won album of the year before coming back to the pre-show, that's pretty,
25:08that's pretty rare.
25:09So a lot of folks to that point, you know, they, they are wanting to make sure that they're
25:12there for that moment.
25:14So yeah.
25:15Shout out to both of them as well for winning some of the R&B fields right there.
25:17Anderson .Paak too.
25:18Was at the pre-show to accept as well.
25:19Oh, you did.
25:20Yes.
25:21Right.
25:22Because he's got the tie with Avery Sunshine for progressive R&B.
25:23So, you know, make, make note that people will show up for these things.
25:27I mean, it's the Grammys.
25:28It's the Grammys.
25:29All right.
25:30Quick note before we pivot away from the Grammys.
25:32Favorite performance of the night.
25:35Speaking of performances that, you know, there were, look, y'all were up here talking about
25:40that.
25:41I mean, it's gotta be Dolce, but I loved Ray.
25:43Oh my God.
25:44Jesus Christ.
25:45She was killer.
25:46Well, I guess we could cheat and say we just love the Best New Artist Medley.
25:50Yeah.
25:51Yeah.
25:52We can say that.
25:53We could say that because genuinely I'm immediately, literally you're in my head.
25:56I immediately went to Dolce, but I was like, Ray, that orchestra moment with the bare feet,
26:00with the, oh my God.
26:01With the bare feet.
26:03Shout out.
26:04The never ending note.
26:05Shout out.
26:06No shoe.
26:07No shoe manufacturer.
26:08Shout out.
26:09No sponsor.
26:10That's a diva right there.
26:11I like that.
26:12I don't know, but shout out to my girl, Sabrina Carpenter.
26:13I love her.
26:14Yes.
26:15Yeah.
26:16Sabrina.
26:17She knows how to perform.
26:18And she tapped.
26:19Shout out tap.
26:20I love tap.
26:21Somebody, someone's getting fired.
26:22Yes.
26:23Yes.
26:24There was a lot of, yeah, yeah.
26:25Also, shout out Gaga and Bruno.
26:26Their California Dreaming cover was gorgeous.
26:27Wasn't that nice?
26:28Yes.
26:29Wasn't that nice?
26:30That was a beautiful performance.
26:31Yeah.
26:32That was beautiful.
26:33Oh my God.
26:34I loved it.
26:35I know you had thoughts, but I think-
26:36Wait, what are your thoughts?
26:37Share with me.
26:38I think that medley really just got across what Brat was.
26:42Really just captured what I felt like when I was at Sweat Tour, what I feel like when
26:47I'm hearing this album outside.
26:49It was the perfect representation of it, and honestly, probably one of the best and most
26:53energetic I've seen Charli on stage in a minute.
26:56I was happy she got to close the show, have that moment for herself.
26:59I wish she got to accept and award on the stage as well, but-
27:02Shout out Charli.
27:03She won three awards.
27:04Oh, okay.
27:05Recording package, dance pop, recording and dance album.
27:08Yeah, I saw the dance category.
27:09Shout out.
27:10Yeah, definitely shout out to Charli.
27:11I know she's talked about how she thought Grammys were never going to happen, so for
27:16her to capitalize on this moment-
27:17I never thought I'd hear that kind of music on the Grammy stage.
27:19For real.
27:20You want a guest to call up my underwear?
27:21Oh.
27:22Speaking of that, shout out to Charli.
27:24I genuinely, I love the performance, but I saw a tweet that made me laugh.
27:27It was like, yo, having Diana Ross witness Brat is crazy.
27:31Which is how I felt when Patti LaBelle referenced Brat at the DNC.
27:34I was like, why does Patti LaBelle know what Brat is?
27:37This is not-
27:38You want to talk about impact, that's impact.
27:41No, literally.
27:42One last performance that nobody saw coming, because literally no one knew this was going
27:48to happen.
27:49Of course, we're talking about the return of The Weeknd, Abel Tesfaye, back on the Grammy
27:54stage after a several year feud.
27:59Not submitting his projects to the Grammys after not getting any nominations in the After
28:04Hours, Blinding Lights era.
28:06Harvey Mason Jr., CEO, introducing the performance, really pointing out that we're going to-
28:11Make it right.
28:12Right.
28:13The Recording Academy is going to make better outreach and better efforts.
28:15And The Weeknd back on stage doing a medley, Cry For Me, Timeless with Playboi Carti out
28:20there.
28:22What were your thoughts about The Weeknd's return?
28:25I was just happy that I was actually surprised.
28:29These award shows love to do a surprise guest.
28:32Who's going to be here?
28:33We knew, we knew.
28:34And it's like, we never-
28:35It's the Black Keys.
28:36Right.
28:37It's like, no one interested.
28:38It's like, The Weeknd?
28:40I thought I would never see this happening again.
28:42It didn't even cross my mind.
28:44It's the Chainsmokers.
28:45I also was never expecting to ever see a Playboi Carti on the Grammy stage either.
28:48So that was a really cool moment to have both of them.
28:53Upon re-watching the performance, now that I got the hype out of my system, I wasn't
28:57loving it.
28:58I don't know if it was the best way to display those songs in particular.
29:02I think Cry For Me is a lot more explosive than what we were given in his performance
29:06there.
29:07I think that song deserved a better showcase specifically.
29:10But outside of that, I think it's dope that he's back.
29:13And I think it really is indicative that the Grammys have turned a corner.
29:18It was a five, six year stretch where it was like, damn, do we care about these anymore?
29:22Are the top line artists just going to walk away?
29:25Drake is no longer submitting.
29:26People stopped showing up.
29:28Week is no longer submitting.
29:29But now it's like, we've reconciled.
29:31We're back.
29:32Will this mean Hurry Up Tomorrow is all over the Domination next year?
29:35Will he submit next year?
29:37We'll see.
29:38But it does feel like that, coupled with this year's winners results, coupled with this
29:42year's overall telecast, does feel like we're entering a new era of the Recording Academy.
29:46We're back.
29:47I know you waiting on somebody else to make his or her way back to the Grammy graces.
29:53We'll see.
29:54We'll see.
29:55Maybe after Ricky Part 2, she'll come back.
29:57Oh, okay.
29:59Maybe.
30:00The Weeknd performance made me think like, you know, watching it, first of all, it was
30:05funny because people were like, if I send you a picture of the Weeknd, they're like,
30:08this means I'm not standing on business.
30:10I'm going back on my word.
30:12Four year boycott.
30:14When thinking about it, and I love music, I love the Grammys.
30:18It showed that he had his beef with the Grammys, but it really exemplified, it doesn't have
30:25to be this way forever.
30:26Them snubbing Beyonce for so many years, but then giving her an award.
30:30The Weeknd being bad, but then coming back and literally performing.
30:34I think that really shows that there's really changes that are actually being made behind
30:39the scenes.
30:40And I love it because I don't want to hate the Grammys.
30:42Previous years, I was also like, I understand why people didn't watch, but now we're back.
30:46So I'm very excited for this new era.
30:48We ran down some of our favorite performances.
30:50Y'all head to the comments.
30:51Let us know if we missed somebody.
30:53And if you agree with our picks, who were your favorite performances from the Grammy
30:57Awards?
30:58Let us know in the comments below.
31:00Keep it on The Weeknd.
31:02He's in the middle of a big week for himself.
31:04Obviously, the new album is out.
31:06Hurry Up Tomorrow.
31:08Big features on there.
31:09We got Justice.
31:10We got Anita.
31:11We got Scott.
31:12We got Florence and the Machine.
31:14Lana, his favorite, you know, creative muse in a sense, almost, maybe.
31:18The star girl.
31:19The star girl, yeah.
31:20Giorgio Moroder.
31:21Shout out Giorgio and Playboi Carti, of course.
31:23So, big week for him.
31:25It looks like this album could really do some damage on the charts next week.
31:28Pretty much a lock at this point.
31:30Frontrunner for number one.
31:31Would be his fifth number one album on the Billboard 200.
31:34First, going back to After Hours back in 2020.
31:37Coming through.
31:38Looks like, so far, a really, really strong first week.
31:41Thoughts on the album?
31:43There's this big lead up.
31:44Obviously, we got the stadium tour going.
31:46We got, you know, a double album.
31:48This is the end of The Weeknd, name as we know it.
31:51So, this is really a capstone on everything that he's given for the past
31:54decade and a half.
31:56What do y'all think about Hurry Up Tomorrow and how it sort of closes the
32:00entire saga of The Weeknd?
32:03Oh, speaking of that, really quick, I know he said that this is the last
32:07project under the name The Weeknd.
32:09I don't know because he can technically do that, you know, release under
32:13another name, but people are never going to stop calling him The Weeknd.
32:15So, I don't know how that's going to work out for him, but best wishes.
32:19You should have best wishes for that branding.
32:21But that should never work.
32:23I think it was just my first initial thoughts because, honestly, I haven't
32:27spent an extreme amount of time with it because it's only been a few days.
32:31I think it was a good way to marry what his Day One fans have always been
32:37asking him.
32:38And you know that I always understand when people are like, oh, your music's
32:41changed or whatever.
32:42I understand that point, but I understand artists genuinely evolving and
32:47their sound changing.
32:49It's a good way to marry what his Day One fans wanted, but also what he has
32:53been doing for the past few years.
32:56That's the initial thought that I got from that album.
32:59And overall, I really like it.
33:01Alright.
33:02Brother K?
33:03I loved it.
33:04Okay.
33:05I never know.
33:06Because he always has an expression and a dramatic pause.
33:10And he was just quiet and not like, and he was about to rip it apart.
33:15No, I really, really do love this album.
33:17He's like, I loved it.
33:18I do.
33:19As someone who, you know, kind of grew up alongside The Weeknd and has
33:23really been with him from the mixtapes on to this moment, it does feel like
33:29a really great swan song to the character of The Weeknd and a really well
33:33thought out one.
33:34I was picking up notes to all the different chapters of his career, all
33:37the different albums that he's put out over the course of his career.
33:40I love that he was also able to make Brazilian funk work in his way.
33:45I feel like we've gotten some artists trying to do it, but it hasn't
33:48really worked.
33:49It seemed genuine.
33:50He really unlocked it for his lane here, and I love that sound.
33:54I actually wish we got five more songs sounding like that on the album
33:57to be completely honest.
33:59But yeah, I need to stay with it a little bit more.
34:01I've given it like three full listens, but I really enjoyed it.
34:06I just love that everything did seem very intentional, and it was a really
34:10well thought out goodbye.
34:13When you take this in terms of this is a trilogy with After Hours and Don
34:17FM and now this one, this was not just a haphazard.
34:20This is the last one.
34:21I'm sick of being The Weeknd.
34:22He really did give us a nice concerted goodbye.
34:27I'm nervous about the film, mostly because I didn't like The Idol, and I'm
34:32actually kind of weird and braided out that I feel like the movie might make
34:36me not like the album.
34:38Uh-oh.
34:39I don't think that will happen because you already like the album.
34:42But the association could, you know.
34:44The association.
34:45Paint it.
34:46Because apparently I think the log line says Wake Me Up is a really key
34:50song in the movie.
34:51It really is like this album is a pseudo soundtrack for the movie in a way.
34:55And I feel like if I don't like the movie enough, I might get sick of the
34:58album.
34:59But I hope that doesn't happen.
35:00But he hasn't given me much to work with in the past.
35:02So we'll see.
35:05But I'm rooting for him.
35:06Love Jenna Ortega.
35:07I feel she's going to kill it in that role, whatever that role is.
35:10Whatever she's in is gold.
35:12I wonder what an Abel Tesfaye, you know, non-Weeknd.
35:17I think he's ready to explore that.
35:19Honestly, that's what I got from this most recent record.
35:21Because as much as I did enjoy it, a lot of it is stuff that we've heard him
35:25sing about for the past six years.
35:27It's not that new.
35:29But I think him finally shutting that character gives him the space
35:32psychologically to go different places in his art under a different name.
35:37I think you can kind of hear in his lyrics that he himself was feeling
35:40boxed into the character for a little bit towards the end.
35:42So this was like, let's kill it.
35:44So let's figure out what Abel sounds like.
35:46And I'm so intrigued.
35:49I feel like it would be really dope if Abel sounded like the complete
35:51opposite of The Weeknd.
35:53Whatever that sounds like.
35:55Maybe completely analog instrumentation.
35:57That could be cool.
35:58Nothing digitized.
36:00Man.
36:01Straight acoustic.
36:02Straight acoustic?
36:03Like Devil May Cry, that song from the Hunger Games soundtrack,
36:05was just him on guitar.
36:06It could sound like that.
36:08Okay.
36:09I'm excited to see.
36:10He's got some options.
36:12It is funny when you look back at the trajectory of that career,
36:15that started from the forefront of the alternative R&B scene,
36:19in the trenches down in Toronto.
36:21The dark.
36:22Who is this guy?
36:24What does he look like?
36:26And then he sort of jumps to this point where he becomes
36:30Max Martin's main collaborator.
36:33It's like a fascinating arc that you would have never,
36:36if someone would have told you in 2010 that,
36:38hey, this guy will be topping the charts with Max Martin
36:41in less than a decade.
36:43If you told me after Kiss Land, I still would have been like, no.
36:46It's a crazy run.
36:48That was a crazy jump, yeah.
36:49But yeah, to that point, I think there are all sides of that on this album.
36:53I'm probably most going to take away the first third of it,
36:57the sort of energetic, sort of fueled up tracks.
37:01But yeah, I think if you have been traveling with The Weeknd this entire time,
37:05you do get all shades of him across the 22 tracks.
37:08Shout out to Baptized in Fear.
37:10One of his most well-written songs.
37:12Speaking of The Weeknd.
37:14Literally, this upcoming weekend.
37:17That's right.
37:18Super Bowl halftime show coming up.
37:20Kendrick Lamar, of course, headlining.
37:22We know SZA's going to be there.
37:23The Luther Vandross account tweeted.
37:25Yeah, that was interesting.
37:27The state account mentioned that there was going to be something with Luther going on.
37:30So you're getting a hologram.
37:32What could that be?
37:34Luther hologram.
37:35I'm kind of here for it.
37:37Kendrick can't have too many misses right now,
37:39but a Luther hologram might be a little much.
37:42That would definitely be a miss.
37:44So, yeah, obviously people are starting to wonder what will be on the set list,
37:49even beyond just Not Like Us.
37:51Curious to hear what you guys, you know, if there is one song,
37:53you know it's probably going to be more hit-filled.
37:55So whether it's an obvious hit, whether it's a deep cut,
37:58what in the Kendrick catalog are you hoping he brings out
38:01or does in a special kind of way?
38:03Okay, so I cheated.
38:05I have three.
38:06You got the set list?
38:07Breaking news.
38:08Okay, no, no, no, no, no, no, because I have three.
38:10I'm sorry, I could not just narrow it down to one.
38:13I'm sorry.
38:14I love Kendrick.
38:15So my prediction for the intro is if Pyrus and Cribs all got along,
38:20they probably got me down by the end of the song.
38:23Seem like the whole city go against me every time I'm in the street.
38:27I say, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
38:29But then they cut it there.
38:31They go to something else.
38:33Okay, so my personal favorite, which most likely will not happen,
38:37but I would love it if it did happen.
38:40You guys know Die Hard on Mr. Morales with Blast and Amanda.
38:46I just personally love that song,
38:47and I feel like it's a fun song that would do well in a setting like that,
38:50but highly doubt it.
38:51And then the last one, I'm sorry.
38:53The undeniable one is Loyalty with Rihanna.
38:56Oh, yeah.
38:58Like Rihanna shows up.
39:00Y'all be wishing for this.
39:02So every year they be wishing.
39:03No, why not?
39:05I feel like that could very well happen.
39:07Rihanna coming out just for that song.
39:09It could very well happen.
39:10Okay.
39:11All right.
39:12I mean, I love the vision.
39:13I love the idea.
39:15I mean, all great picks.
39:16I don't know.
39:17I'm not putting my money on a reappearance,
39:18but you'll be rich come Monday if so.
39:21Kyle, what you looking forward to?
39:23Also, shout out to the Vag team, by the way.
39:26That's what I want to hear.
39:27I want to hear Wesley's theory.
39:28I want to hear that intro so bad.
39:30I want Lowkey to start the show with that.
39:33Then we got to censor two words in.
39:35Well, yes, because actually every nigga is a star,
39:38and I think Kendrick needs to remind America of that
39:40when we get on that Super Bowl stage this week, this weekend.
39:44So, yeah, Wesley's theory is what I want to hear.
39:46I feel like he's going to do all his hits,
39:48and I like all the hits.
39:49So whatever he picks, I'm going to be fine with.
39:51But if I had to pick one,
39:53I would love to hear Wesley's theory.
39:55Okay.
39:56I know it's going to be a hit-filled thing,
40:00so I'm not really trying to go too far in the deep cut bag.
40:03I just want to make sure I want DNA to be up in there.
40:05Yeah.
40:06And I think in particular, you know,
40:08he always seems to do something special at All Right.
40:10And I think, look, given the climate,
40:13given the political situation,
40:14given how a lot of people are feeling, you know,
40:16All Right has really been one of those eternal anthems
40:19that has always turned up.
40:20So I think when he has the moment to do something big
40:22with that song on a very big stage at a time like this
40:25in a city like New Orleans, like to really remind people,
40:28literally, we're going to be all right.
40:30I think there really could be something, you know,
40:32even more special than all the times we've seen it before,
40:34really turn that song into something that solidifies
40:38its status and strength as an anthem.
40:40That sounds like a good outro song, you know?
40:43Like, we're going to be all right.
40:45Go ahead.
40:46I know you got points on the outro.
40:48No, because I was just like,
40:49I've been trying to think like what did he perform
40:51when he came out for Dre and will he double dip?
40:54So I looked it up and he did Mad City and All Right
40:57when he came out for Dre's Super Bowl halftime.
40:59So would he double dip?
41:00So I'm wondering if he would double dip and I'm like,
41:02but those, I feel like he would double dip with All Right.
41:04I feel like you can't not do All Right.
41:06I feel like he could get away with not doing Mad City,
41:09even though I love it.
41:10Or an L.A. kind of, I mean, like an L.A. crowd, L.A. moment.
41:12But it's like he got other L.A. anthems off the new album
41:15that he probably would do, I feel like, instead of Mad City,
41:17but like All Right, I feel like he would double dip with All Right.
41:19Well, I'm saying with Mad City he would have, you know,
41:21that makes sense to do it in L.A.
41:22You can leave it off if it's,
41:24since it'll be in New Orleans, perhaps.
41:25Oh, you guys are right.
41:26He did start with Mad City, right?
41:28Also, he wouldn't do that again.
41:29My prediction is probably not going to happen
41:32because he wouldn't do that again.
41:33Oh, you know what I want?
41:34King's Dead.
41:35Bring out a feature and do King's Dead and Like That.
41:36I'm like, okay, come on, J.
41:38King's Dead was a banger.
41:40So we think Not Like Us is going to actually,
41:42he's going to do it, right?
41:44I think he'll wink at it or not.
41:46I think it'll be an instrumental, like maybe a marching band.
41:48I'd let the crowd sing it.
41:50Something like that.
41:51I don't know if he would.
41:52That's what I kind of wanted from the jump.
41:54I don't know.
41:55After this week?
41:56That's the thing.
41:57I feel like after the Grammys,
41:58he can literally just look at that set list and be like,
42:00all right, fuck it.
42:01Fuck it.
42:02Not Like Us ever again.
42:03Let's go.
42:04I don't know if it's, maybe it was Carl.
42:07I know some other discussions I've had with people
42:09just sort of around the office think that
42:11All the Stars, since this will be here.
42:13Oh, yeah.
42:14That should be the closing.
42:15All the Stars would make a good closing song,
42:16you know, just sort of.
42:17And we'll probably get a Chadwick tribute of some sort
42:19when they do that also.
42:20Yeah.
42:21So he got a lot of options.
42:23So clearly check there.
42:25Do we think he's going to extend the Isle of Ranch to Wayne
42:28and invite him as a guest?
42:30Or anyone from NOLA for that matter?
42:32People said that is absolutely not going to happen.
42:35There's a 0% chance.
42:36Because obviously his affiliation with Drake
42:38and it just looks crazy.
42:39But to me, I really feel like it can happen
42:42and that would be such a cool moment,
42:44like in New Orleans and, you know, all the hoopla,
42:46but then ending it like this and being like,
42:48surprise, Lil Wayne is performing anyway.
42:50I would be a fan of it.
42:52I want that to happen.
42:53That's really up to one Lil Wayne to figure out
42:56what it's going to do.
42:57One Lil Wayne.
42:59I mean, of course, you know, it's New Orleans.
43:01It's, you know, sort of once in a lifetime.
43:03So I think it'd be great if it happens.
43:04But if it doesn't, I think everybody can understand why.
43:07Lil Wayne performs Jealous tweaker remix.
43:09Yo, they do the tweaker remix?
43:11Halftime show.
43:12Yo.
43:13Hell yeah.
43:14Okay.
43:15No, it's not.
43:16Yeah, okay.
43:17I love the song, but don't do that.
43:18Look, we start with Rihanna.
43:19We're getting too pie in the sky.
43:21Pie in the sky is yellow.
43:22We literally ask it for all the stars.
43:24So we not, you know, look at that.
43:26There's only like 13 precious minutes.
43:28That's right.
43:29We're not trying to get it out.
43:3013.
43:31All right.
43:32Well, we'll see what happens this Sunday
43:34at the Super Bowl halftime show.
43:36Real quick, you know, it's going to be the Eagles
43:38and the Chiefs.
43:39Predictions?
43:40Eagles.
43:41Anybody on the Chiefs?
43:42I really, really, really want the Eagles to win,
43:44but I think the Chiefs are going to win.
43:46But I'm rooting for the Eagles.
43:47It will be a big night either way.
43:49Obviously, you know, people will want Jalen Saquon
43:52to get that first ring, go for, you know,
43:55the revenge that the team had,
43:57and it's fallen short a couple years ago.
43:59Or, of course, if the Chiefs win,
44:01first time we'll ever see a three-peat in the Super Bowl era.
44:06So something good is going to happen either way.
44:09We just got to root for a good game.
44:10So make sure y'all tune in for the Super Bowl this weekend.
44:13We, of course, will be back next week to recap
44:15the halftime show and everything else that happens in music
44:18between now and then.
44:19So until next week, thank y'all for keeping us here
44:21with Billboard Unfiltered.
