00:00What do you know about Brian Schottenheimer?
00:25Everybody likes Brian Schottenheimer.
00:27All I hear is positive things about Brian Schottenheimer.
00:29It's like, you know, all the discussion about the decision and was it right or was it wrong,
00:33is Jerry crazy, et cetera, is like, you know, everybody says, but no offense to Brian, he's
00:37a good coach.
00:38He might do really well.
00:39So I think it surprised a lot of people because Brian's obviously not out interviewing with
00:43other teams.
00:44He's not a guy that's on these lists.
00:47But yeah, I think he's a good coach who's been waiting a long time for his shot.
00:51And no pun intended.
00:53And I think, you know, I mean, he knows the team, like, here's the thing, guys, like,
01:01I mean, these first time head coaches that have been coordinated, you don't know if Ben
01:04Johnson's going to be a good head coach.
01:05You know, if Liam Cullen's going to be a good head coach, like Brian Schottenheimer's got
01:09a good chance, any of them to turn out.
01:11So I can kind of see why he wanted to keep it in house.
01:14But I, you know, I don't know.
01:16I also understand why the fans are kind of like, you know, why can't we do a big wide
01:20search like everybody else does?
01:22Do people around the league scratch their heads as to why the Cowboys operate the way
01:26they do with not really wanting to do a widespread head search?
01:30They didn't do the last time they interviewed two guys.
01:32Yes.
01:33And I remember people were surprised then as well.
01:35So I think, I mean, Jerry has a famous quote, right, about I can find 500 people to come
01:40coach his team.
01:41And I guess he's practicing what he preaches.
01:44Like he feels like, you know, I think he sees guys like, you know, Andy Reid, Sean Payton,
01:49Jim Harbaugh making like in excess of 17, 18 million dollars a year.
01:53And I think Jerry feels like that's too much to pay for that position.
01:56Like not that he doesn't have it, but just that that's sort of not that that's that's
02:01overdoing it.
02:02And that's just the way he feels.
02:04And so I think, you know, that's why you see him narrow it down a little bit like that.
02:08So I'm with Dan Graziano here on 105 for the fan.
02:11Dan, why?
02:12One of the questions we've asked of people is why not Kellen Morthen?
02:16Like if they want to go familiarity and an offensive mind and why wasn't it Kellen Morthen?
02:20Sure.
02:21Good question, because that seemed to make a lot of sense given his connections there.
02:24I don't know the state of that relationship, right, how it ended.
02:28I hadn't heard that it was bad, but I know he and Mike McCarthy had a difference of opinion
02:32when they parted ways.
02:34Could it be that Kellen has some bitterness in his in his in his memory about that?
02:39Could it be that something lingered with the Cowboys and maybe they just felt like the
02:43continuity that Schottenheimer represented was more what they wanted than going back
02:47to Kellen?
02:48I mean, they did make a decision a couple of years ago to move on from Kellen for whatever
02:51reason.
02:52So obviously there was something about him that wasn't, you know, screaming for them
02:55to keep him there in their minds.
02:57So they've been working with Brian Schottenheimer a while.
03:00They like him.
03:02You know, a lot.
03:03The Jones family relationships matter a lot.
03:06Right.
03:07I mean, Jason Garrett was kind of part of the family for for a while, and that might
03:10have kept him there longer than I think a lot of people may be expected.
03:13So maybe they have a comfort level with Brian Schottenheimer.
03:16They enjoy working with him and they find him a guy that they believe in by virtue of
03:20just the time they've spent.
03:21Dan Graziano, ESPN here on The Fan.
03:23What surprised you about the Hall of Fame announcements last night?
03:27So yeah, I mean, I saw Darren Woodson here yesterday.
03:30He didn't sound like he was very hopeful.
03:32But, you know, I the Hall of Fame, the Pro Football Hall of Fame is a is like a.
03:37Are you a voter?
03:38No, it's like a pet peeve of mine, not because I'm not a voter, but just because I don't
03:41like their process.
03:42I was a baseball Hall of Fame voter for years when I covered that sport.
03:46And that always felt like, you know, we got a lot of grief for it.
03:49But like you get a ballot in the mail, you mail it back in.
03:51And if 75 percent of them say yes, the guy's it right.
03:54This is like 50 people get together in a in a secret room once a year and like twist each
04:00other's arms.
04:01Right.
04:02It's like it's so filthy.
04:04Like I don't understand why they get away with it and why it's never been overhauled.
04:07So in terms of the selections, like the guys who got in seem like they deserve to get in.
04:12But their rules and the process is so strange that I don't know if you're allowed to put
04:16five in.
04:17Why not put five in like that?
04:18There seem like there are some other guys that they could have gotten that fifth spot.
04:22Were you stunned that Eli more stunned that Eli or Vinatieri didn't get in?
04:28I didn't think Eli was going to get in first ballot.
04:30I think there's enough debate over him among that group and people in general about whether
04:35I think he gets in eventually.
04:37But it didn't seem like he was enough of a slam dunk to merit first ballot.
04:41As the parent of a kicker, I was pulling for Vinatieri.
04:44I know how much it would have meant to my son, who's a division three kicker up in Maine
04:48at Colby College.
04:50But you know, it is tough.
04:52The kickers and punters have not historically gotten a lot of love in that room.
04:56I think Vinatieri gets in eventually.
04:57But you know, again, I'm not in there.
04:59I don't know.
05:00Is Orlovsky really that weird of an eater?
05:03Yes, proudly.
05:04It's so weird.
05:05I mean, he'll he'll insist that he's right, which is which is bizarre.
05:10But no, he's his food takes are very upsetting.
05:13It's one of the, I think, most irresponsible things we do at ESPN is let him go on the
05:17air and talk about food.
05:20Does McCarthy get another job?
05:22That's a good question.
05:23I don't know.
05:24He's in his 60s.
05:25Right.
05:26And that's tough.
05:27Like, I know Pete Carroll bounced back with the Raiders, but I was surprised by that as
05:30well.
05:31You know, McCarthy, there was talk of the Saints being interested, but they never actually
05:35reached out like he that was all, you know, imagined.
05:39He was free to interview for two weeks and it still is, by the way, and the Saints never
05:44did it.
05:45So, yeah, I don't know.
05:46I think it's been a while since he won a championship and what he did in Dallas for three years
05:52with twelve twelve wins three years in a row.
05:54I think that's impressive.
05:55But I also think that he's seen as someone whose offense may be, you know, people are
06:01looking for newer ideas.
06:02And I think that may be what holds him back from getting another job.
06:04Would you like some developing news, Dan Graziano?
06:06Please.
06:07Feldman, the Cowboys are targeting K-State OC and O-Line coach Connor Riley to become
06:13their new offensive line coach.
06:15Yeah.
06:16Who's that?
06:17He coached Cooper Beebe, I guess, right, at Kansas State.
06:19So there's some familiarity there.
06:20Yeah, we were talking about that this morning.
06:22It's interesting that Feldman got it.
06:24I was trying to get that confirmed.
06:26But yes, he is, you know, I think that their staffing wise, you know, they got on this
06:31a little bit late, so they might have to be doing some sort of outside the box stuff.
06:36He has familiarity with one of their key offensive linemen and, you know, he's somebody, obviously,
06:44that they and or Brian Schottenheimer feel is a prospect.
06:46Thank you, Dan.
06:47Enjoy the weekend.
06:48My pleasure.
