00:00The Department of Agriculture approved the importation of 4,000 metric tons of onions
00:07according to Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel, Jr.
00:10This is to avoid the recurrence of the onion crisis in 2022
00:16where the retail price of onions reached P720 per kilo
00:21due to a decrease in supply.
00:23It is expected that in the next two weeks,
00:27there will be 3,000 metric tons of red onions
00:32while there will be 1,000 metric tons of white onions.
00:37This is while waiting for the arrival of local onions.
00:40Explained by Bureau of Plant Industry Director Glenn Panganiban,
00:44this is just the beginning of the possible supply gaps.
00:49As of January 31, there are more than 2,000 metric tons of red onions
00:55while there are only more than 600 metric tons of white onions.
