00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at every mainline Dynasty Warriors
00:12game and ranking them from worst to best.
00:16Do note that we are not including any of the licensed spinoff games, nor the Empires or
00:21Samurai Warriors spinoffs.
00:23Also note that we are not counting the original Dynasty Warriors, as that game was so drastically
00:28different from its sequels that it would just be simply unfair to rank it.
00:40Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:44Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:50Number 9, Dynasty Warriors 9.
00:59No matter where you go or where you look, everyone within the Dynasty Warriors fanbase
01:03shares the same sentiment about Dynasty Warriors 9.
01:06And they are completely right, Dynasty Warriors 9 is the worst game in the entire franchise
01:12for two very big reasons.
01:15First, it was the first in the franchise that went open world when it didn't need to,
01:21and forgot to fill its massive open world with things to do.
01:24You can be exploring for several minutes only to find nothing, or at the very least, one
01:29of the few mundane side quests featured in the game.
01:32But what really makes the whole situation with DW9 worse is the monetization.
01:38There are so many characters, costumes, and weapons locked behind a paywall that you just
01:43can't help but wonder what in the hell the base game is offering that is even mildly
01:49worth your time.
01:56Number 8, Dynasty Warriors 6.
02:09Even if Dynasty Warriors 9 never happened, Dynasty Warriors 6 would still be regarded
02:14as the worst in the franchise.
02:16The only reason it trumps DW9 is because A, DW6 isn't loaded with absurd DLC and microtransactions,
02:23and B, DW6 has actual gameplay behind it.
02:27But the reason DW6 is often regarded as the second worst game in the series is mostly
02:33because of the technical performance.
02:35If you played on Xbox 360, maybe you didn't suffer as heavily as PS3 users did.
02:40Even so, the bugs and glitches were just too frequent to tolerate, and it didn't help
02:45that the game simply didn't look great with all of its washed out colors.
02:49Ah, the good old days of the piss filter.
02:53Had it come out today, maybe Omega Force would have been able to fix things up a bit.
03:08Number 7, Dynasty Warriors 7.
03:18Unlike the previous two entries, Dynasty Warriors 7 does offer a fun time with its
03:23attempt in bringing the franchise to a more grounded, back-to-basics level.
03:27There was much more focus here, with the campaign being centered on four specific characters
03:31and a much more refined art style than DW6.
03:35The problem is that DW7 reeled in the focus way too much to where the game just gets boring
03:42rather quickly.
03:43Sure, you can carry plenty of weapons and customize them to your heart's content, and
03:47the introduction of conquest mode was kind of neat, depending on who you ask, along with
03:52some of the other little bells and whistles like EX weapons, but when you have features
03:56like these and don't really do anything interesting with them outside of their introductory
04:01phase, well, it's like eating a sandwich with no sauces, no seasoning, not any condiments
04:08at all.
04:09You gave us just the meat and bread and you called it a day.
04:12It's solid meat and bread, but a little more flavor could have taken this a long way.
04:17Also, what kind of Dynasty Warriors game doesn't include free mode?
04:20Huh?
04:21What's up with that?
04:22You have supported me until the very last, my friend.
04:31My son, Liu Shan, he must take over when I am gone.
04:38Number six, Dynasty Warriors 2.
04:44Back when it first came out, Dynasty Warriors 2 was one of the coolest video games you could
04:48play.
04:49Never before had a game managed to cram so many characters on screen reacting to the
04:54player's actions.
04:56Honestly, we thought our PlayStation 2s were going to break or combust from all the crazy
05:00nonsense happening on screen.
05:02This was the game that would set the course for what future Dynasty Warriors games would
05:06become.
05:07The only reason it falls on the bottom half of the list is because players today may not
05:12be fully on board with the basic hack and slash gameplay, at least when compared to
05:17the other gaming franchises that would shape and evolve the genre later on.
05:29Number five, Dynasty Warriors 3.
05:32Father, please forgive me.
05:38While Dynasty Warriors 2 built the foundation for the franchise's identity, Dynasty Warriors
05:433 took that and ran with it, and this is where the IP was truly born.
05:48See, what DW3 brought into the mix were RPG mechanics.
05:52It wasn't enough to just destroy hordes with a couple of broken combos.
05:56Now you had to level up at a rate consistent with the battle's gradual rise in difficulty.
06:02In other words, you had to be vicious while also managing your time and attention at a
06:07reasonable rate to stay powerful.
06:09This alone is what makes DW3 still hold up today despite the abysmal English voice acting,
06:17which in its own way is kind of amazing.
06:21Feel the power of my magic!
06:25I shall depart.
06:26I leave the rest to you.
06:31Number four, Dynasty Warriors 5.
06:41In all honesty, Dynasty Warriors 5 does not hold up well in visuals at all.
06:46The same could be said for the other games, of course, but the reason DW5 gets this high
06:51of a spot is for the way it further expanded on the formula.
06:55DW5 took the base aspect of Dynasty Warriors 4 Empires and managed to incorporate it into
07:01the main series.
07:03So on top of defeating enemies and getting properly leveled up before the big boss showed
07:07their ugly mug, now you had to traverse between your bases to aid your troops in battle before
07:13they were overtaken.
07:14You could even lead your troops to neutral bases to gain advantages over the enemy faction.
07:19This borrowed concept created a beautiful blend between action RPG gameplay and strategy
07:25game mechanics in a way that no games were doing at the time.
07:28No matter how many of you there are, weaklings have no place on the battlefield!
07:34Number three, Dynasty Warriors Origins.
07:37You're pathetic.
07:40Shall I put you out of your misery?
07:43Wait!
07:45What you carry is a gift from the Emperor to starving people.
07:50This is the first Dynasty Warriors game we've had since the disastrous Dynasty Warriors
07:549, and there was quite a bit riding against it.
07:57How does it hold up compared to other hack and slash games?
08:00Did Omega Force and Koei Tecmo learn their lessons from DW9?
08:04Does this IP have a future in the 9th console generation?
08:09Yes, yes, and absolutely yes.
08:13Dynasty Warriors Origins is the evolved installment in the franchise we've been hoping for with
08:19its superb technical performance.
08:22And while it looks spick and span like a new action RPG, it still retains some of the cheesy,
08:27localized voice acting we've come to expect from Western releases of the series.
08:32Here's hoping the series makes its presence more known moving forward.
08:37I would like to rest, but first I must report to his lordship, the governor.
08:44Indeed, duty first, then we'll raise our cups in celebration.
08:49Number 2, Dynasty Warriors 4 DW2 was about laying down the groundwork
09:05for future games.
09:07DW3 incorporated ideas to give the combat more depth.
09:11What was DW4 bringing to the table?
09:13Fun and creative ways to kick ass.
09:17Not only did every character get their own identity through a weapon made specifically
09:22for them, they were also given incredible powers that made you feel unstoppable.
09:28In addition to an already stellar combat system in Musou mode, DW4 also gave players the ability
09:34to create up to 4 custom characters for use in the campaign, as well as other modes.
09:40For a time, this was often regarded as the very best Dynasty Warriors game ever, until
09:46our final entry made its debut in 2013.
09:50An interesting opportunity for you, cousin.
09:54Indeed, chaos can be a powerful ally.
10:00Number 1, Dynasty Warriors 8 Perfection, sheer perfection.
10:23That is the only way to describe Dynasty Warriors 8.
10:26For starters, you had an insanely meaty roster of playable characters, a whopping 82 to choose
10:32from.
10:33That's not all.
10:34Each character would be given their own mission objectives, even if you already played the
10:38level with a completely different character.
10:41Free mode made a return and lets you play as the enemy faction for a change, so DW sin
10:47has already been alleviated here.
10:49Then you have all the different weapons with different affinities, the new rage mechanic,
10:54challenge mode, ambition mode, so many different game modes with hundreds of hours of replay
10:59value just waiting for you.
11:01Dynasty Warriors 8 was truly ambitious for its time, and we may never get another game
11:06in the franchise quite like this.
11:21Which Dynasty Warriors game is your favorite?
11:24Don't have to be the mainline, feel free to tell us if it's an Empires game, a licensed
11:28spinoff, or if it really is one of the core games, but let us know down in the comments,
11:32and be sure to subscribe to Mojo Plays for more great videos every day.
