Victoria's Premier has ordered another review into the state’s bail laws as Parliament resumes for the first sitting week of the year. Just days out from by-elections in Werribee and Prahran, Jacinta Allan has conceded that more needs to be done to protect community safety.

00:26As I outlined this morning, I understand from listening to people from across the Victorian
00:31community how crime hurts families, it hurts working people in particular.
00:36Earlier flanked by her new Attorney-General, the Premier announced a fresh law and order
00:41review.
00:42The terms of reference is to review current laws.
00:47The writing instructions to the Attorney-General and the Police Minister are to go away, review
00:52the current laws, including bail.
00:54Just last year, the government strengthened bail laws, promising to crack down on serious
01:00offenders.
01:01Those new laws are working their way through the system, however it is also important to
01:06respond to community concerns.
01:08There were more than half a million offences committed in Victoria last year, up 13%.
01:15And 100,000 family violence incidents, a never before seen high.
01:21The Allen Labor government, particularly Jacinta Allen at the moment, is panicking because
01:24she's got two by-elections coming up that she knows will be a judgement of how she has
01:28delivered on crime here in Victoria.
01:31The scope of the Premier's new review is unclear.
01:35The ABC understands it will look beyond bail laws, taking in wider justice matters.
01:41I am not going to stand here today and rule things in or out.
01:44What is clear is that both sides of politics have their eyes firmly trained on the issues
01:49at play for this weekend's by-elections happening in Paran and Werribee.
01:54And crime is front and centre.
