00:00The Allen government's keen to paint these bail laws as the solution to the state's crime
00:07woes.
00:08It's all part of the Premier's new hastily-pulled-together, tough-on-crime approach to counter the very
00:14visible youth crime crisis that's been gripping the state, with the added benefit of helping
00:20to rebuild the relationship with the state's police force after the recent long and bruising
00:26pay negotiation.
00:28The concern by some is that crime rates were a problem long before it became a political
00:33issue for the Premier, prompting her to announce a bail review last month.
00:38The bail amendment being debated tonight, officially named the Tough Bail Bill, was
00:43only announced a week ago.
00:45The Coalition says it's not tough enough.
00:47They've even tried to change the name of the bill, while others say it'll put vulnerable
00:53people at risk.
00:54The Greens in particular have raised concerns the bail reforms will remove protections embedded
01:00in the system following the death in custody of Indigenous woman Veronica Nelson.
01:06But it appears the government will have the support from the Coalition to get the changes
01:12through Parliament, just to begin to address a problem that keeps on growing.
