00:00A few times hackers targeted the cellphone of the Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez
00:06in the middle of the talks between the Philippines and America on security issues.
00:11I.K. Romualdez, this information came from the intelligence community of America.
00:15First news, J.P. Soriano.
00:18While forming the largest alliance between the United States and the Philippines
00:27on maritime security and strengthening cooperation in the West Philippine Sea,
00:33Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez expressed his concern about a possible cyber attack
00:40which is one of the leading and leading in negotiations.
00:44Our relationship with the United States is a very important one
00:48vis-a-vis the challenges that we face right now in the West Philippine Sea.
00:52So obviously we're vulnerable to this type of cyber attack.
00:56In a forum at a university in the United States,
01:00Romualdez mentioned that he targeted his cellphone based on information from the intelligence community in America.
01:08The information was passed on to me by our friends in the American intelligence community
01:13that I was one of those targets for being hacked, my telephone.
01:18And so I remember, I'm sure probably the Chinese ambassador, Ambassador Wang, does not remember,
01:25but in one of those occasions, I think it was in Bandian or in Malacanang,
01:31I said it in jest, it was just a joke, but I meant it,
01:37that my phones are being hacked and I can't afford to change my phones anymore.
01:42In the statement of the Chinese embassy in the Philippines,
01:45Wang denied what Romualdez said.
01:48It has been a long time since Romualdez has seen Wang.
01:52Wang did not know where Romualdez got his statements regarding the Chinese hacking issue.
01:58Romualdez responded to this.
02:01Of course, it will be denied.
02:04It could be private Chinese hackers, we don't know, but the fact of the matter is,
02:09and now we have stories in the Philippines about espionage, the Chinese spies that are roaming around.
02:16As part of the entire agreement between the United States and the Philippines in recent months,
02:20the U.S. Rotational Force Posture of the United States under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement, or EDCA,
02:27is the historic trilateral summit of the United States, Japan, and the Philippines in Washington.
02:33In these meetings, some of the most concrete actions and assistance of the United States
02:38to ensure the free and safe navigation of the South China Sea and the West Philippine Sea.
02:44And because he is listening to his phone, Romualdez said that he needs to travel to the Philippines
02:52so that he can personally tell President Bongbong Marcos some very important information.
02:58On very important matters that I have to report to the President,
03:01I have occasionally flown back to the Philippines, a 24-hour flight to the Philippines,
03:09at my own personal expense, to be able to report to him on matters of paramount concern for our security.
03:18Last week, some Chinese nationals who are in the Philippines were arrested by the NBI
03:24because of allegations of espionage.
03:27The Chinese embassy called it just a speculation.
03:32This is the first news, J.P. Soriano for GMA Integrated News.
