Do Police Community Support Officers make a real difference in preventing crime and improving community safety, or should we just have regular police officers with full powers instead?

00:00I'm a little bit biased because my daughter was a PCSO and that was her route into the police force
00:05and she's now a senior police officer in Cambridgeshire where we come from. That was her route in and she
00:10loved every minute of it. I come from a local government background and when PCSOs were first
00:15invented and my own local authority used to subsidise it when it first started and the
00:20thing was that people were constantly moaning as me as a local councillor, we want to see uniforms
00:25on the street, want to see uniforms on the street and I used to say well if you want to see uniforms
00:29on the street you've got to pay for it and as long as they saw that happening they were quite
00:34happy. They should put more money into actually looking at crimes what needs solving rather than
00:40walk around the streets looking for people to like pull up and stuff. I mean it does keep everyone
00:45safe and stuff like they do do a good job but at the same time there's definitely other things that
00:50need sorting. No power whatsoever really when you think about it you'd have to call somebody in and
00:56put this out for purpose I mean you know.
